Pours an opaque very dark brown with dense creamy light brown head. A few thin rings down the glass. Smell: rich dark roast coffee, earthy, toffee, cocoa, mild plum-y fruit sweetness in back. Taste: unsweet chocolate, caramel, dark fruit note, then big roast with burnt edges. Fading into graininess, some tannin-y bitterness. Might be a little drier than the original, still nice.

Thanks to GRG1313 for sharing this one at his tasting.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, chocolate syrup, and coffee aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa, coffee, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop and roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with a nice balance of cocoa and hop aspects.

750ml opened at Trappist Provisions. Reviewed from notes.

Pours a near black color with a thin dark brown head. I get notes of heavily roasted coffee and rich chocolate on the nose. The flavor follows with huge notes of coffee and chocolate milkshake. The finish is strong with tons of bitter dark chocolate and coffee that lingering through to the aftertaste. Rich, medium-full body , but the mouthfeel is watery and thinner than I expected for a beer made with oatmeal. Moderate carbonation. Overall this was bitter and coffee forward, but not super oatmealy. Good but not as good as original.

750mL into a tulip. Pours a dark opaque brown w/ not much of a head, just a thin film and collar of soft khaki foam.

Aroma is big on bitter espresso roast coffee and roasty dark malts. Strong and almost acrid, which I enjoy as a lover of strong black coffee.

Taste is equal parts coffee and stout as well. Sharply bitter, a little acidic. Roasty and dry, with a touch of cocoa. The interplay between the coffee and the malt is what makes this beer work.

Mouthfeel is slick and coating with a dry finish. A nice bitterness lingers on the palate.

Overall a pretty nice collaboration between Mikkeller and Anchorage. Would drink again.

Pours dark dark brown with a slight dark brown sugar hue that graces the edge. Thin head of tan foam spots of lace. Nose is coffee, bitter chocolate, a fruity kind of floral form the hops and a faint trace of dark fruit. Roasty. The thin head refreshes with a few turns of the glass and in a bubbly manner so it reminds me of a very dark rootbeer.

Taste is a milder than I expected but nice and dry. The roast is deep but not thick or heavy. There is not a lot of sweetness although when it warms it sports a drop or two of cream. The dark fruit is far in the background and not well defined enough to really name it. The mouthfeel is thin but creamy and has an almost soda like carbonation that keeps this beer very light and moving fast across the palate. The oats are in there and they lend a creaminess. The coffee is robust. At first I would have said bland but then as this drinks I keep picking up a few subtleties that make it very delicious. The malt is really lovely and bitter but not too bitter. Drinks easily and would be light enough for breakfast. Not the least bit heavy. This is a textbook oatmeal stout.

Excellent.

Darn I wanted this to be my 500th review but wouldn't you know I put it under the wrong beer. Now it's 501. Oh well.

A: Pitch black body with a small quickly receding tan head. Spotty lacing.

S: Big coffee upfront, followed by milk chocolate and hints of vanilla. No oak to speak of. Lacking depth, but still smells great.

T: Nowhere near as potent as the nose. Roasty coffee takes the lead, with a hint of bitter bakers chocolate. Tannic and bitter oak notes on the finish make this reminiscent of over extracted coffee. Not bad, but a bit dissapointing following the aroma.

M: Medium bodied, with a drying and lingering astringency I'm assuming is due in part to the oak.

O: Definitely prefer the original, but this wasn't bad. Glad to have tried it.
