Served in wide mouth brandy glass at around 45-50 F

Translucent amber orange with one finger loose buff white head. No lacing and little head retention

Some oak and little sourness. More malty in scent with persimmon and wildflower notes coming to the fore. A bit astringent.

Nice round and full oak with black cherry, wild yeast, lemon, persimmon, boozy but balanced.

Warming, I can taste the alcohol. Fizzy and Dry with a bittering that sticks to the back of your throat. Slightly off putting

Interesting and enjoyable taste. Other areas lack a bit but otherwise pretty good.

Poured from a 2013 bottle.....

L: A nice slightly hazy golden hue with bubbles streaming up not much of a head to speak of...

S: Was pleasantly surprised smell like a fantastic gueuze musty, funky, cheese like maybe? .. A bit of fruit..great smell I assumed it would smell like flowers and honey for some reason haha.

T: Immediately comes in with a funky barnyard taste reminds me ALOT of tilquin.. A nice citrusy lemony candy ends dry. no flower to speak of..tho I've never taste a elderflower.

F: was hoping for it to be a bit more sprakley it ends a bit flat ..but still not bad

O: Love this stuff great lambic gonna be buying the rest of the spontan series to give try!

Bottle from West Lakeview Liquors. Served in an Off Color tulip.

A - White foam settles to a partial cap, thick collar, and a few stray specks of lace. Lightly hazed golden body.

S - Smell like lambic. For some reason, this particular one has a crackery Pils malt vibe to it amidst the lemon, white grape, tart apple, and what I take to be elderflower. I haven't had Zwanze 2009 or elderflower liqueur in a while, but the vaguely peppery note is what I associate with those beers. There's a bit of cheese cloth too as it warms up, but not as extreme as in Sour Bitch I had recently. I sometimes wonder if these beers are pasteurized as I feel like they don't develop much over time.

T - The taste is quite similar, with lambic and elderflower flavors up front and the aforementioned cracker malt character in the finish. I don't recall ever getting the latter in any beer in the series, but I'm guessing Mikkel buys lambic from all over the place for this series. Moderate sourness of the lactic variety, with a touch of medicinal brett mixed in as well.

M - A bit more heft than your usual lambic, but that isn't surprising at 7.7%. Dry, with pleasant carbonation. Some light lingering stickiness on the palate. No perceptible alcohol.

D - This one was pretty good. I remembered liking the Spontandoubleelderflower at Dark Lord Day a few years back. This doesn't seem as peppery but that could just be due to age? Ratebeer says the bottles are the same; not sure what to make of that. In any case, had no problem downing 375ml bottle.

Mikkeller Spontanelderflower Lambic
serving type: goblet, tap at Mikkeller Bar San Francisco, CA (Jan 2015)

A: Deep golden amber. Just striking

S: Elderflower and vinegar with lots of apple come off the top. There is a light sprinkling of funk on top of that.

T: Elderflower and yeast show up first. Sour milk and wheat make up the backbone. Lots of lacto and surprisingly, there's no horse blanket. Champagne style overripe fruit. Plum/apricot that's about to burst and of course, fields of flowers.

M: Reminiscent of Belgian beer. There's a wonderful champagne like tartness, lightness, and sharpness. Dry but not chalky.

O: One of the best wild ales I have ever had. Sophisticated and wild, brimming with flavors delicately layered over each other.
