Finally a Mikkeller beer I like. Underrated, IMO.

Very sour at first. Finish is long, dry and oaky. Subtle vegetal quality in the finish as well. Color is deep pink (you know, like beet juice).

Very good sour beer. Price was a little high at $12 for 375ml though.

Pours a clear, red/pink color. 1/3 inch head of a pink color. Decent retention and slight lacing. Smells of strong sourness, floral, fruit, slight sweet malt, alcohol, earthiness, and mustiness. Mouth feel is dry, sharp, crisp, and average carbonation level. Sweet malt, alcohol, fruit, earthiness, hint of yeast, hint of sugar, and a hint of mustiness.

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers The Festival 2014 held at Crafted in San Pedro, CA.

Pours a murky red with a foamy khaki head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is sour with malt, fruit, acidic, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with sour malt, fruit, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of acidity and wood bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a good beer with solid fruity characteristics, but I wouldn’t be able to identify any sort of beet qualities if I didn’t know what I was drinking.

Serving type: bottle.

oh what a slice of heaven this thing is. potentially the best of the series i have had so far, although i have a few more on deck. this is gold, rich and earthy, bloody purple red in color, but clear for what it is, and fizzy like a soda pop. i smell sour before i smell beet, lemony lacto and carbonation bombard me. beet juice is secondary, sweeter than it is by itself thanks to the grain, and yeasty as anything, weird its so clear. i get lacto and brett, sour and funk, longest lasting finish of any sour beer i have ever had. i go from puckery to mouth watering, and then what waters makes me pucker again, and so on and so on. its never ending, waves after waves of almost all the pucker i can stand, but every wave resolves. its so perfect. a little less beet forward than i wanted, but the color and the density make it beety enough for me. the sourness here seems more than in others, not sure if the sugars are more simple so they are eaten more completely or what, but here it is, a beet sour beer thats better than any expectation. reminds me of great dinners, great wines, eastern europe, and late summer all at the same time. mikkeller has taken some flack, but come on people, this is nearly perfect, magical wild ale like none other. my fullest marks for this one off gem.
