huge fan of these mikkeller beers that come in so low on the abv, its a real pleasant summer thing, and this is a pretty good berliner. dry hopped from what i gather, really cloudy and milky looking, and not lacking in body at all for a beer this low in alcohol. its not real sour, i got a very quick dirty lacto, like a starter made from wort but not given enough time to finish, turbid and murky and rushed intentionally. there is a lot of structure to the wheat base, and it is dry, which is the genius here. proteins i assume account for a lot of that, and explain the shade. light lemon zest and juicy wet hops are the main smells, while the hops are far less vibrant in the taste. its a little dirty for me, quick and weird in the belly, homebrewy, but i like its clean finish, i like its effervescent carbonation, and i like that they made another beer you can drink fifteen of and not be beside yourself, i think the world needs more inventive session beers. mikkeller makes some of my favorites, and while this will get trashed by some folks, i dug it for what it is. wanting to try the bottled edition, this was on tap at star bar.

edit: way way better in the bottle than from the tap. a lively pineapple tangy hop profile is really robust, and it finishes a lot cleaner. i see two listings for this beer, one with "hop on" in the name, but i am fairly certain they are the same beer. in the bottle as part of the mikkeller advent calendar this year. bumping up a few scores based on this format.

330ml bottle - so, so, so many variations of this apparently base style from this 'brewer'!

This beer pours a, well, it pours a damned-near full glass of uber-foamy, puffy, and creamy bone-white head, with the scantest of hazy, off-mineral water 'colour' brew, which eventually leaves a full swath of intricate webbed lace around the glass as it slowly subsides.

It smells of grainy and crackery pale malt, a lesser spicy wheatiness, lemon/lime citrus peel, some veritable, er, 'dank', rather green apple, white saltines, soured milk, and some very tame leafy, earthy, and weedy noble hop bitters. The taste is gritty and grainy pale malt, wheat crackers, a hovering lacto sourness, some mixed unripened citrus and pome fruitiness, that essence that seeps out of my wife's bathroom when she's been having a typically hard day, and more understated herbal and earthy hoppiness.

The carbonation is obviously overwrought up front, but soon settles to a decently supportive frothiness, the body an adequate medium weight, and actually fairly smooth, with a strange aerosol creaminess arising as things warm up a bit. It finishes trending dry, the tainted milk-touched crackery nature carrying us home.

Overall, other than the trigger-happy bubbles, this is a very-well rendered version of the style, all dry crackers, citrus, and sour milkiness. I wouldn't have considered those concepts particularly mesh-worthy or agreeable all that long ago, but now I can see how they make for an affable brew - just not one that I want to drink when it's freezing outside - my bad?

Pours pale straw yellow with a white wheat haze, big bubbly head that fades into a pile of suds in the center, scattered lacing. Mostly sour nose is mild, a little wheat and yeast present. The taste is lemon lime sourness, at a nice level that makes for an easy drinking brew. Mild earthy bitterness on the back end. Mouthfeel on the thin side but soft. Overall a light tart treat, worth a try.

With the rudimentary bacterial fermentation of lactobacillus leading the way (ewe!), the acidity that results have supplanted the alcohol of brewer's yeast for a sour taste that's a serious blast from the past. But as today's hops take a similar tart and fruity trek, new meets old for a funky and fresh attitude that hits home in the Berlinerweiss style.

Bright lemon in its pour, the color is canary straw and laced with the wheaty haze that's expected from German wheat beer. But its tangy aromas evoke mouthwatering effects as the scent is awash with lime, tart apple, orange, leaf, cannabis and burlap. But its initial taste shies away from the earth and toward the warhead candy sweet and sour medley.

As its wheaten body relaxes and the acidity reigns supreme, the sourness commands the taste and reveals more lemon, lime, crabapple, under-ripened orange, green berry, green grape, cider and dry chardonnay as its acute palate stripping. As the ale trends more and more sour, the acids are clean, crisp and highly refreshing, especially when backed with the tropical fruit flavors from hops, delivering their own pineapple, passionfruit and cannabis vibrancy in both flavor and bitterness.

Dissolving quite effortlessly on the finish, the light and dry ale closes citrusy and clean. Its short aftertaste is of citrus but with with gently rolling echoes of bread, reminding us all of the beer's wheat underpinnings.

330ml, great-as-usual label describes it as a dry-hopped berliner weisse.

A - Pours pale-as-it-gets yellow with some cloudiness, lots of carb-bubbles and a few fingers of white head. About a half-finger remains by the end with a bit of lace left.

S - Purely slight lacto acid, with some wheat and lemongrass, bit of grapefruit. More of a tart citrus feel coming out more with warmth.

T - Definitely a nice light and tart kick to it, but a bit hard to pull real flavors out. Kind of a lemonade soda feel and a minerally herbal-ness to it. Gose-lite minus the coriander. Not sure how much the dry-hopping contributed, though some hoppage was noticeable in the scent.

M - Light and foamy all the way, kinda watery but nothing I didn't expect for 2.8%. Carbonation is pleasant and swishy, tartness is nice and refreshing.

O - Though not really practical price-wise, I've always appreciated the 'Drinkin' in the' series for trying to work some actual/decent flavors into extreme-low ABV beers. This is actually a somewhat common strength for berliners so it's not as bizarre as the others, but this is definitely nice for 2.8% - the tartness has some punch to it, it's a refreshing easy-drinker. Just not a whole lotta flavor going on, the nose was a bit more promising.

BOTTLE: 11.2 fl oz. Brown glass. Best before date (from the cap): 24/03/18. Imported to Finland by Diamond Beverages. Good label art. Unbranded pry-off crown cap.

Reviewed live as a Berliner weisse per the label. Expectations are high given the brewer (my favourite in the world, probably). Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland.

No bubble show forms as it's poured.

HEAD: Fills the entire glass, leaving little body. Snow white, and soft as hell, with a gorgeous fluffy consistency. Retention is extremely good - ~15+ minutes. Leaves an even coating of lacing on the sides of the glass as it recedes.

BODY: Clear bright yellow of average vibrance. Clean; no yeast particulate or hop sediment is visible.

It's a nice looking Berliner weisse, but I do wonder why it isn't a bit more hazy. Seems pretty clearly filtered. Appears well-carbonated to say the least.

AROMA: Subtle lactic sourness is dominant, but this is a pretty mellow aroma overall. Wheat, mild sourness (~2/10 in terms of intensity), clean barley.

Aromatic intensity is quite light.

TASTE: Has a simple lactic acid sourness - which is probably ~2/10 in terms of intensity. The bacterial sourness is painfully shallow and simple, not evoking true spontaneous fermentation and failing to evoke the complexity usually found in the style. Has a simple wheat backbone and some mild grassy hop notes.

It's balanced, but given its simplicity that isn't much of an accomplishment. I do like it, but it leaves much to be desired in terms of subtlety, nuance, and just plain ole crowd-pleasing sourness.

TEXTURE: Acidic, smooth, wet, light-bodied, and refreshing. It's very pleasing on the palate, and I find it approachable. Complements the taste well, and fits the style, but it lacks the pronounced smackiness featured in the best Berliner weisse beers.

OVERALL: True to the Drink'(i)n series, this is an easy drinking beer great for the summertime and while it's far from great within its style, I'd definitely buy it by the 6-pack...if not for the price. Will please the discerning drinker, but it won't impress. More good work from Mikkeller.
