Purchased at the GBBF 2007...
Appearance: black as pitch, opaque, billowing layer of dark-tan foam, great head retention
Aroma: roast, vanilla, herbal and grapefruity hops, soy sauce, chocolate, espresso, hint of oxidation
Flavor: medium-sweet maltiness entwined with the bitterness of roasted grain, espresso, "American" hops (with a hint of the hop flavor peeking through, too); peppery alcohol, chocolate, and a hint of papery oxidation; finishes semisweet with a lingering coffee-bean bitterness and hop-flavor-burps
Mouthfeel: full body, pert carbonation, silky texture like after eating fine chocolate, slight alcohol warmth
Other comments: This is a damn near perfect beer. A real "beer geek" stunner. Would be really interesting to age this beer for a while. Unfortunately, I only bought one bottle. It was £4.50, but well worth the price tag! Interestingly, I happened to be eating a "Continental" lunch of cured meats, olives, brie, balsamic & olive oil, and black grapes. This beer went strangely well with the meal and the black grapes in particular.
