Poured into a pint glass, got a lot of pillowy tan head on top of a nice inky black body. Head retention was good and leaves a decent lacing too.
Very very roasty smell, almost harsh. Bitter espresso being the most noticeable scent followed by very dark roast malt smells. There was a touch of nuttiness too. Alcohol made it to the nose but it wasn't particularly strong.
Taste was like the smell: very robust and rough. Very bitter courtesy of the dark roast, with the malts and coffee making up the bulk of the flavour. Was a noticeable but minimal alcohol bite. Also had an acerbic bite.
Quite a thick brew, full bodied and dry. A decent carbonation which was very much needed to take some edge off the roughness.
Drinkable, I think the alcohol all things considered was very well hidden. It was full of flavour, and had a refreshing dryness but it was fairly rough. Personally something I'm partial to but I think being a little smoother would have put this a notch up in my books.
