Bottle with no freshness date, received in trade. Must be at least 1 year old at time of drinking.
I love "breakfast" stouts. The combination of coffee, oatmeal, vanilla, chocolate, and roast just does it for me. And I love dry beers, although dry stouts aren't always my thing. Mikkeller does an excellent job with the breakfast style, such as it is, but it's extraordinarily dry - too much for my taste.
Pours a beautifual brownish black, with a medium dark brown head. Tons of very fine bubbles. Aroma dominated by coffee, with some underlying chocolate and vanilla.
Taste is *dry* - no sweetness to be found here. Very good, but still, bone dry - I wish there a little more balance. Almost a dry powder like a porter. A tannic finish, makes you want some water before taking that next drink.
Although I love the style, this particular expression is not to my taste. I need just a touch of sugar from the vanilla and chocolate - not too much, but more than I'm getting here. Certainly a very good beer, but probably ultimately not for me.
