Poured into a Teku glass. Maybe not the ideal vessel but it will have to do for now. Decent mocha head but it dies out fairly quick. Some ruby, red velvet highlights tinge the head; sultry looking. Deep and dark, though, just as it should be.
Smell is full-force coffee beans and cocoa -- it smells like the big sack of Penzey's cocoa I have waiting for holiday baking.
Really rich but approachable at the same time. Coffee, dark chocolate dominate. Smoke lingers in the background, some of it teeters on charred flavors. Mouthfeel is silky smooth creamy -- thank you, oats! Body is fairly full, although not so rich and full that it isn't easy drinking. My girlfriend, who is typically not a huge fan of bigger stouts, thought this was very drinkable (and likable).
This is very lovely to have with a breakfast dinner. I made a bacon and extra sharp cheddar omelette for dinner; this beer was a fantastic pairing. It cut through the sharpness of the cheese, enhanced the smokey flavor imparted by the bacon and complimented the fresh, course ground black pepper I added to the eggs. I could also see this as dessert or with a properly grilled, medium-rare NY strip steak.
