This beer pours a pitch black, appearing thick, with a nice amount of dark tan head, which does linger lightly, lacing the glass. The smell is of roasted malt, with some oat, and an undertone of coffee. There is an air of bitterness in the smell that foreshadows the taste.
The beer has a woody feel to it from the get go, accentuated by dark roasted malt flavors. A black coffee taste hits later in the drink. I'd say overall, the beer more fits into a standard high-IBU stout that a coffee (or generically, a flavored) stout. I think what I mean by that is it lacks a body and depth of flavor or creamy smoothness that I might expect from the alternative styles. The end feel tugs on the tongue with what at times is a taste similar to burnt coffee.
Overall, this beer is a solid option if you are looking for a bitter-forward stout. I personally didn't get much of the coffee taste, but it is there. For me, I wish the IBUs were dropped a little, and I'd like it better.
