Poured from a bottle into a Lost Abbey Teku. Pours out nice and black with a massive dark tan head that shows some really good retention. The nose has lots of roasted malt, bitter espresso aromas, and a woody note as well.
Full body and very bitter flavor. Roasted malt and coffee flavors are everywhere in this beer. They are amped up right from the get-go. Intense flavors of espresso assault the senses. You can almost feel the grittiness of coffee grounds on the inside of your mouth. The finish is pronounced and sustained, leaving a strong coffee flavor lingering behind. The feel, while firm for a beer, seems a little thin for the style. Something tells me the feel is helping to intensify the bitterness.
Overall, I have to say this beer was a disappointment to me, especially given the price. However, to those BAs who love extremely intense coffee flavors, I'm sure this beer is a Godsend. Myself, I like more sweetness for balance and more complementary flavors as well. For example, sweet malt and chocolate flavors to help offset the bitterness of coffee and add a little complexity. This beer reminds me a lot of Bell's Java Stout, except that it's nearly 6 times the price. But hey, don't listen to me. If you like stouts with intense coffee flavor and don't mind the bitterness, you should seek this out.
