12oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a pitch-black color. The head is a finger high, and dark tan in shade. Retention is quite excellent, with its creamy shade providing excellent aesthetic appeal. A ring of lacing is left on the glass. (4.25)

Smell: This brings the coffee forward quite well. However, it’s not some one-note coffee bomb: I’m also picking up notes of dark chocolate, roast, and piny hops. The hops and the roast blend together extremely well – I just know this will turn out nicely… (4)

Taste: This is surprisingly hoppy. I’m enjoying the big initial notes of pine, herbs, and grainy oat. Quickly, it transitions into flavors of chocolate and vanilla cream. Coffee remains a subtle suggestion throughout. Further sips balance it out further. Bold and easygoing all at the same time; this one’s a winner. Only flaw is that the coffee is bit too mild for my personal tastes (and really, that isn't much of a flaw...) (4)

Mouthfeel: Unlike a lot of stouts, it’s very dry and almost clean. In fact, it drinks much like an overgrown dry stout. Carbonation is moderately high, creating an additional illusion of lightness. Not once does it become too cloying or heavy on the palate. (4)

Overall: No, it’s not a pure coffee bomb. What it does is mesh coffee, hop, and roast flavors incredibly well. I could easily drink two or three of these in a sitting…shame that’s such a financially unsound idea. (4)

4.01/5: Great oatmeal stout; loving the hop/roast/coffee interplay

11.2oz bottle enjoyed from a snifter.

A unique take on the venerable oatmeal stout with coffee. Beer Geek Breakfast pours a near-black shade of brown and has a nice khaki head. The dominant aroma is bitter, almost acrid pine. There are some faint notes of bitter chocolate and charred coffee beans, but the bitter pine is overwhelming. The flavor is also quite bitter, but an enjoyable bitter much like cold-pressed coffee made with French roast beans. Even so, the flavor profile is well into charred/burnt, rather than roasty, territory. There's also some sweetness here from the chocolate malts, and a strong spike of piney hops. Mouthfeel is on the light-to-medium side; each sip coats the palate and leaves a dry, resiny film on the tongue.

This is a well made beer, but one that I just didn't care for. I love intense bitterness in IPAs and DIPAs, but I found that level of bitterness to be off-putting in a stout. Great roasted/charred/burnt coffee flavor, and if you like Central Waters 16 or maybe even BA Old Raspy you'll probably like this one a lot.

I got this one from a recent trip to CA and paid $7 for an 11.3 oz bottle.

It pures black with a great medium mocha head, but wait what are these chunks? ? For most of the pour, I got these clear chunks. I searched reviews and on the retired breakfast, someone mentioned chunks of gelatin.

After the rough start, the aroma was OK but seemed a little off, with some fusel alcohols present. Coffee aroma and taste on this. The mouthfeel was great, and had a dry roasty aftertaste. As it warmed up it got drier. Near the end I felt more of the chunks, probably gelatin as mentioned on that other review.

Overall this was solid, buy won't buy again for the price and gelatin!
