A - A good looking pour, with a solid blackish body, with brown highlights, and a thin wisp of tan head that fades to a single ring.

S - Coffee notes, subtle floral perfume.

T - Lots of bitter coffee acidity, but this does not eclipse the oat and malt hit that forms the core. Stout roastiness, with a fairly mild close.

M - Sticky and slick, which is a trick. Ultimately, a moderate stout, not too heavy, with a bit of bite in the close.

O - A very tasty oatmeal stout, with nice coffee elements. Full body and flavor.

Dated best by January 29, 2018 enjoyed October 21, 2015 in a Mad Elf tulip/snifter.

Look - Dark brown body. Slow to develop tan head fine to medium bubbles dissipates quickly to a ring. I am not seeing much sediment as expected. Pin point lacing and nothing more.

Smell - Chocolate. Coffee. Sweet.

Taste - Chocolate. Coffee. Cardboard. Char.

Feel - I like how heavy it is for abv. Carbonation explodes with swallow.

Overall - Not as dirty as I like my breakfast stouts. More on the milk chocolate side as opposed to dark chocolate. Light on the char. Nice feel for their low abv stout.

Had brown jelly globs that seemed harmless but still weird. Love the flavor with rich coffee notes that work well with the malts and yeast. Not my favorite in the style but would drink again.

Pitch black pour. Thin slightly off-white foam that settles into a healthy, thin coating. Smell is muted, but the coffee comes through. The taste is lighter, but definitely coffee. First taste struck me as heavy on carbonation, but that feeling didn't last. Great replacement for actual coffee.

Pitch black in color with no penetration to light whatsoever. There's 3/4 of an inch of densely packed beige head resting on top. Heavy lacing. Aroma is of intense wood smoke, coffee, and a faint whiff of oatmeal. The flavor is an intense initially of oatmeal and it quickly transitions into coffee and oatmeal. The mouth is very thick and viscous.

A-pours black, with a thick tan head with great retention that clings to the glass and leaves nice lacing
S-citrus, roasted coffee, bittersweet chocolate
T-lots of roasted coffee, burnt chocolate, citrus flavors follow, with more unsweetened chocolate lingering
M-medium bodied, smooth, and slick
O-Heavy on the roasted flavors and bitterness but still a very enjoyable brew

Ink black with about a finger of chocolate-milk colored head that shoots up at the end of the pour out of nowhere. Rich dark chocolate aroma, with a bit of coffee grounds and vanilla in the background. Woah. Extreme black coffee taste. Bitter up front, but while the coffee taste lingers, the bitterness doesn't. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, but not as much as expected from an oatmeal stout. Can't believe I'm saying this, but perhaps too much coffee in this one.

Milky dark brown body, looks thin. Aroma contains lots of fresh coffee, rich chocolate, and roasted malt. Taste takes a step backwards, mostly acidic coffee without the richness, only a hint of the previously advertised malt and chocolate. The finish does, however, last a while. Body is thin with prickly carbonation.
Plenty of coffee, but not much else to support it. Tasty, but not an inspiring brew.

Poured from chilled 12oz into a room temp pub glass.

A: Pours pitch black, the absence of light, but with the look of a lighter body style. Has a khaki head which quickly dissipates into a thin layer which clings to the edge of the glass.

S: Big, robust coffee and toast dominate.

T: Starts off boozy, but pulls cleanly across the palate leaving only toast and alcohol.

M: Surprisingly carbonated for an oatmeal stout, the body is also a little light.

O: A light body with a big coffee and toast flavor, the big alcohol presence is a little surprising at under 8%. This be isn't nearly the size it seems to be. Overall I enjoyed it, and would have more.

Pours a black color with a huge light tan three finger head. There is quite a bit if lacing due to the frothy head. The odor is very coffee, bitter chocolate, vanilla, nutty, slight spicy note. The taste is crisp, coffee, nutty, bitter chocolate, woods, bitter dry on the backend. Overall a little thin on the mouthfeel.

Jet black. No head. Pour in a snifter. Not much smell a hit of coffee. Taste... Coffee goes boom!! Delicious. Taste lingers after. Feels smooth and oily adheres to your mouth. Highly recommend. Would definitely seek more.

Love this coffee stout. pours pitch black and the smell of coffee is unmistakable as is the taste of the coffee in the beer. If you like Peche Mortel you will like this one though this one might be just a little more drinkable.

A: Pours dark as used motor oil. Fluffy khaki head, about a finger worth, which hangs around quite well.

S: Coffee through and through. Dark roast, like Sumatra. Follows with cocoa powder and a hint of booze in the finish.

T: Follows nose pretty thoroughly. Big bitter coffee up front, then dry cocoa powder. Finish is bitter iced coffee with a touch of alcohol.

M: For a breakfast stout this is pretty on par as far as viscosity goes, but the carbonation is uncharacteristically high for the style.

O: A nice coffee forward breakfast stout. Not mind blowing but not disappointing either.

Arrived in a snifter.

3.25 A: Black color. Came with just the slightest medium brown head.

3.75 S: Big coffee - deep roast. Very raw malty, grainy. Resiny with herbal hops.

2.5 T: Overly roasty and charred. Lacking depth. Too dry with too much hop bitterness.

2.5 M: Medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Lacking creaminess.

2.5 D: Overly bitter. No good.

This is good. But, I can't review it independently without comparing it to the other Beer Geek: Brunch Weasel. Brunch Weasel blows this out of the water. BW is twice the price almost per bottle, and it really is worth it.

Breakfast is just OK. Very strong & a bit bitter.
Meh, probably won't seek out again, glad I tried though.

A 330ml bottle with a best before date on the bottle cap of 20th May 2019, and poured into a snifter glass. This one was brewed and bottled by Mikkeller at Lervig Aktiebryggeri.

A: The beer poured pitch black with maybe just under one finger tan head that dissipates fairly quickly leaving nice stringy lacing.
S: Aromas mainly of coffee and dark chocolate along with some slight cognac alcohol and raisin smells.
T: Espresso coffee dominates throughout along with a bit of dark chocolate leaving a long lingering bitter aftertaste.
M: Medium to full bodied with medium carbonation. A creamy beginning but dry finish.
O: I enjoyed this a lot as I regularly drink black coffee and the lingering bitter aftertaste was excellent. I would be very interested to try out all the different barrel aged versions if I ever get my hands on those bottles. However, this is not quite there at Founders Breakfast Stout level which is still my favourite non BA coffee based stout.

Had the BreAKfast version (fermented in oak), didn't like it, was way too bitter. So I was really wanting to try the base version. I do like this one. Nice and thick mouthfeel. Not syrupy. Coffee in your face! Black coffee, that is. Ain't a bad thing. I really like that this stout is different from other good stouts in that this one is not sweet or caramelly, and doesn't apologize for it. Creamy mouthfeel which was nice. Looking forward to finding vanilla shake, and the bourbon version of this one day too :)

Saw everyone going nuts about this beer and came across it during my travels through Germany.
Pours dark black with no light coming through. Small head, lite brown, that disipated quickly.
Great smell, roasted coffe is the dominate armoma with a hint of chocolate.
Taste follows the same key with the roasted coffe being the dominate player. Long lasting coffe after taste as well. You do get an oaty undertone to it as well. Medium feel with some carbonation.
Not a bad beer at all. Very strong coffe roast.

Black with lite brown head that quickly disappeared. Coffee bean roasted malt and chocolate notes. Roasted chocolate malt and espresso flavors. Dusty dry tongue coating, medium lite mouthfeel. Pretty good - I prefer a little more sugar in my "coffee". Revisiting this review (7/21/15) I would add that there is a dry oaky finish as well.

Enjoyed in a teku glass. Thanks, Alan.

A: Blackish with a tan one finger head that lingered. Soapy lacing.

S: Coffee grounds, dark chocolate, oatmeal.

T: Coffee takes center stage, followed by a luscious dark chocolate effect with a light hoppy bite on the finish. Let it warm for maximum smoothness.

M: Medium with chewy medium carbonation.

O: Now I see why this one is so sought after. A terrific way to do brunch.

I was so pumped to finally drink this beer and it was a total yeast bomb. Drank the top half, very intense roasted black coffee. Still kinda pissed, zero carbonation. Not sure what it was intended to taste like.

2015 vintage, 330mL bottle with Keith Shore label. Like other Mikkeller beers brewed at Lervig, the label says 'se kapsel' for best before, but nothing showing up on the glass or the cap. Poured into a snifter glass. Served at cellar temperature.

A (4.5) Pours a thick dark brown with one finger tan head. Lovely amount of lacing on the glass.

S (4.5) Wonderful, strong coffee notes. Sweet, chocolatey tones. Some roasted malts, but overall extremely coffee forward.

T (4.25) Coffee dominant from start to finish. An amount of hop bitterness coming through - I can definitely taste the centennial and cascade hops. I'm guessing this is a fairly young bottle. As per other reviews, the aftertaste lingers forever. Each sip feels like an individual 'helping'. Taste is extremely balanced yet complex.

M (4) Lovely and thick as one would expect for an oatmeal stout. A fair degree of carbonation, but doesn't detract the experience.

O (4.5) After sampling some of Mikkeller's more extreme stouts, this humble soldier lives up to the hype. A beer that is demanding of your attention - there is a lot for the drinker to take away. Proves that a stout does not need to be 10%+ ABV and BA to be complex and nuanced. The coffee is the real hero here.

I luckily have a few BA versions to review at a later date (bourbon, tequila, cherry wine). Happy to have tried the base beer fresh - excited to see what the various barrels have done to this terrific brew.
