12oz bottle into a wine glass.

Appearance: Pours a pitch-black color. The head is a finger high, and dark tan in shade. Retention is quite excellent, with its creamy shade providing excellent aesthetic appeal. A ring of lacing is left on the glass. (4.25)

Smell: This brings the coffee forward quite well. However, it’s not some one-note coffee bomb: I’m also picking up notes of dark chocolate, roast, and piny hops. The hops and the roast blend together extremely well – I just know this will turn out nicely… (4)

Taste: This is surprisingly hoppy. I’m enjoying the big initial notes of pine, herbs, and grainy oat. Quickly, it transitions into flavors of chocolate and vanilla cream. Coffee remains a subtle suggestion throughout. Further sips balance it out further. Bold and easygoing all at the same time; this one’s a winner. Only flaw is that the coffee is bit too mild for my personal tastes (and really, that isn't much of a flaw...) (4)

Mouthfeel: Unlike a lot of stouts, it’s very dry and almost clean. In fact, it drinks much like an overgrown dry stout. Carbonation is moderately high, creating an additional illusion of lightness. Not once does it become too cloying or heavy on the palate. (4)

Overall: No, it’s not a pure coffee bomb. What it does is mesh coffee, hop, and roast flavors incredibly well. I could easily drink two or three of these in a sitting…shame that’s such a financially unsound idea. (4)

4.01/5: Great oatmeal stout; loving the hop/roast/coffee interplay

The beer pours a very light brown head that dissipates very quickly but leaves a slight creamy film on top of the beer. The beer itself is a very dark coffee black that is opaque because that's how oatmeal stouts roll. The surface has a nice slick looking sheen.

The beer smell has some very strong roasted coffee notes mixed with some light dark chocolate notes and medium hop notes. The coffee note is really interesting in that smells like an actual cup of coffee that's been made and not just the beans. The hop notes smell like a wet pine note and mix very well with the coffee notes. The oatmeal notes are also there. The dark chocolate is pretty light when compared to the other notes and only takes off a slight edge off of the beer.

The beer taste is similar to the smell in terms of what notes appear. In the taste, the coffee notes are a bit stronger and much more bitter than in the smell and the pine notes add a nice hop bitterness to contrast the coffee notes. The dark chocolate is still there and is still a bit faint. The most interesting is the coffee aftertaste. Instead of tasting like a cup of coffee, the coffee taste likes the actual beans.

The mouthfeel is a bit heavy bodied and smooth. In addition to being smooth, the beer is also a bit slick. There is very little carbonation.

Overall, a very good oatmeal stout and definitely one of the best one I had. My only regret is that I can't actually have this for breakfast.

The cork nearly popped off on its own when I took the muselet off. Pours black with a several fingers thick, frothy brown head. Smells of cocoa, dark roast malts and some coffee with maybe a light floral hop scent. Dark chocolate and roast coffee emerged as it warmed up. Tastes of coffee, dark chocolate and cocoa powder, sweet malts, moderate hop sweetness fading to piney. The medium to heavy body itself was excellent but it was very heavily carbonated which took away from the flavor and feel, not sure if it is always like that or just this batch. Flavor and smell really popped once the beer warmed and the carbonation dissipated. Left with pine resin on the palate and lips as well as a lingering dark roast flavor. Despite the heavy carbonation it was still an excellent beer.
