On tap at Max's today. My buddy and I split all 9 single hop Mikkelers they had on.

Mildly hazy orange-amber with a dense white head with great retention and lacing, this is a great looking IPA (as were the 8 others)

The aroma is rather disappointing with some citrus, particularly grapefruit and candied orange. The palate opens with a moderate hop character with plenty of candied orange and some grapefruit. Bitterness is moderate and the finish has a definite resiny character that I absolutely love. With low sweetness, this beer has a mild astringency. Still, this is solid

Sampled this beer on draft with an almost full line-up of the Single Hop series (Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook, East Kent, Nelson Sauvin, Nugget, Simcoe, Tomohawk, Warrior. No Centennial.) at Max's Taproom in Baltimore on 4/24/10.

Definitely a much stronger hop, this hits you in the face. Spice and earthy notes are apparent alongside some citrus flavors with this Single Hop. Not the best pairing for the malt profile of this beer, but it would be near impossible to have a wort match perfectly with 10 different types of hops. Leaves a lingering bitterness and dry cotton feeling in the aftertaste.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours an orange amber color with OK head retention and fairly decent lacing. It smells pretty similar to the amarillo version (which I just sampled), with pepper, some hoppy bitterness and a touch of malt. Might be a bit more malt aroma then in the Amarillo. On the palate, however, this beer is very different. The is a bit maltier and sweeter, and I get something of a celery salt flavor as well. It's also not quite bitter on the finish, and unlike the amarillo, I get some alcohol on the finish. Still a nice beer, but I think I prefer the amarillo. Mouthfeel is a bit fuller as well, and drinkability, while still pretty good, suffers a bit from the sweetness and heat from the alcohol.

Very interesting to sample these Mikkeller IPA's side by side.

Reviewed solo served out of an East End pint glass.

Appearance: cloudy and brownish orange, with frothy 1 finger head.

Smell: This reminds me of a freshly peeled lychee, and green fruit, with a bit of green petals.

Taste: This open rather green with an interesting piney hop that turns into a bitter hop which carries into the after taste. Little of the nose makes it into the palate.

Mouthfeel: Light bodied with moderate carbonation, rather coarse.

Drinkability: A bunch of these single hoppers from Mikeller turn out to be One and Dones for me. I recommend this to those who want to try cascade hopping in their brews.

Damn good single hop IPA! Poured with light tan thick foamy frothy head and lots of lace. Color is a very cloudy medium amber. Aroma is mainly cascade hops and backed with malt and a little burnt sugar plus the fruitiness of the hops. Flavor's about the same. Not as easy drinking at the warrior was. A little more fruity. Good body and carbonation. Finish is cascade and has some length.

I bought this to further my knowledge of hop aromas and flavors and this did not disappoint. It smelled hoppy but odd, floral? The taste had a muddy hoppiness to it, very earthy and I was instantly reminded of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Celebration, they must use a ton of cascade in those beers. I think these beers are good for showcasing hops and being educational but I'd never buy one more than once. Not to mention they are expensive.

Whoa. Expected a lot more from this hop.

Pours orange. Large white foam head. Smells ... soapy and of bitter pine. Actually, just bitter ... kind of like pine rinds.

Taste is just straight-forward, bracing bitterness. Really no fruit, and calling it "pine" is stretching. Just palate blasting bitterness.

A chore to drink, no malt.

I gotta admit i love these single hop IPA's from Mikkeller and i am a big fan of the cascade hop so here goes,it pours a light copper hue with beautiful carbonation that leaves a creamy two finger head and nice sticky lacing everywhere, the aromas are piney hops dipped in honey and a tinge of malt,it has a nice easy sessionable mouthfeel to it with tastes of piney hops, honey, malts and it finishes with a slightly bitter finish, overall i have to say i was expecting so much more from this brew being one of my fav hops and even tho it is easily drinkable i just dont think the cascade worked well on its own in this brew but you have to try it so you can make your own assertion.

A: Pours a clear amber/reddish color. A two finger white head forms with decent retention. Lots of sticky lace is left behind.
S: Not much here. Light pine and grapefruit. Some malty sweetness lingers. Pretty generic.
T: A stronger bitterness is present, but no real hop flavor. A sweetness, and an odd woody flavor linger.
M/D: A medium body and carbonation. Sticky and oily. Not hard to drink, but one is enough.

Decent, but a little to simplistic. Cascades are not my favorite type of hops, but there is little character of any kind here. Again, not bad, but uninspired.

Poured from bottle to pint glass. Chilled overnight and let stand on the counter for about 15 minutes to knock the chill off before serving.

A: Very nice pour, golden in color. Excellent, I mean excellent, creamy and silky head. Looked almost like a whip cream on top.

S: Definitely a lot of citrus notes coming from this. Lots of grapefruit.

T: Hop, hop, hoppy. Not a lot of bitterness with the cascade hops in general, but definitely an IPA. Nice bitter.

M: Wasn't bad at all in the mouthfeel. Nice and light across the board.

D: Not something I could drink everyday, but it was an exceptional beer. I'm a fan of the IPA's, but not as a regular style. I would definitely recommend this and buy it again and again, if it only lasted that long.

I had 10 of these side by side on draft at Churchkey the other night -- nugget, amarillo, cascade, warrior, simcoe, chinook, eat kent, centennial, tomahawk, and Nelson Sauvin. It was a great experience to get all 10 of them side by side. Thank you Mikkeller for this great experiment in single hop IPAs. My reviews of these 10 beers may seem slightly redundant but they are different.

Beer was orangish and slightly burnt color. There is an overall slight haze to the beer. Carbonation is moderate and there forms a white head of medium to small bubbles that leaves a lot of lacing on the glass.

Cascades are some of my favorite hops to brew with overall. This beer had a slight citrus aroma to it and an overall mild bitterness. I was expecting more in the way of hop flavors other than just bright bitterness but I didn't get it. Drinkability is fine and mouthfeel are fine.

A - Poured from 12oz bottle - half inch of head dissipates to a thin layer with aesthetic lacing. Appears clear - a pleasant, soft, orange.

S - Sweet pale malts are noted but overtaken quickly by the resinous hops, which are also quite floral and citrusy.

T - The full flavor of the cascade hops is on parade here. The initial bitterness is tempered by delicious tangerine/grapefruity flavor notes. This is a Zen hop experience and as so, aggressively hopped. Just enough malt for this to work - not necessarily well-balanced, but on par for a single hop IPA. Aftertaste is enjoyable and longlasting. It includes some earthy and woody vanilla that increases as the beer warms. The yeast flavors add to the depth and, wait... hop overload... Piney, resiny, bitter citrus dominates. Deep.

M - Mouthfeel just rocks. Carbonation is slightly above average. Hops are almost to the point of feeling chewy, but stop just short of being over the top.

D - For a homebrewer or beer geek, this is Cascade heaven - just enough malt and insane cascade depth without being completely overhopped, this is riding the tight-rope of balance way on the edge. I want to drink more and faster but the price makes me sip slowly to enjoy every drop. Easily quaffable but so packed with flavor anything but sipping is just crazy. I wish this was available cheaper and in 6 packs! Great series from Mikkeller, I think Warrior is my favorite so far. After this beer, 21st Ammendment IPA was very mild; if you must drink another beer after this, make sure that it is bold!

On tap at the Blind Tiger, NYC.

Poured a murky copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was good retention and sticky lacing.

The smell featured a full cascade citrus and a touch of ester.

The taste consisted of a juicy citrus hop and featured a light caramel and subtle ester.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a very good single hopped IPA.

A - Pours a hazy, orange/amber with a large, sticky, off-white head that slowly recedes, leaving some pretty nice lacing behind.

S - Floral and citric hops with a bit of grassiness, backed up by ample bready malt. Not bad, but the hops could be a bit more in the forefront.

T - Citric and floral tones as well as some sweet, tropical fruit (pineapple comes to mind) followed by moderately sweet, bready and toasty malt flavors. Moderate level of bitterness. Somewhat grassy quality to the hops as well. Finish is fairly dry, and some of the citric and floral flavors as well as a touch of toasted malt carry into the aftertaste. More hop-forward than the nose let on.

M - Light bodied with a fairly low carbonation. Feels just a little bit too watered down to rate too high in this area.

D - Overall, I enjoyed this one. Nice showcase of the qualities of the cascade. There are other IPAs I would pick up before this in the future, but its worth a try, if only to single out hops and learn more about their individual characteristics.

A decent IPA, shared with Milos et al. Orangey body with an attractive small white head. Citrus aromas. The taste is on the higher IBU side, some orange. I have had more enjoyable beers employing cascade hops. Still decently drinkable without shredding the palate. A palate cleaner.

N. Sweet, nice balance of hops and malt, subtle pineapple

Wow, well once again I felt like I should contact Glade Plug-ins on this beer. The noise was soo sexy I was actually really excited about trying this beer. It had a perfect balance of malt and hops on the noise and let off a subtle scent of pineapple, and I love pineapple. I put my mouth up to the glass tilted my head up and let that lovely scent of beer hit my senses and POW...I was attacked by straight malt and then possibly the worst after taste I have ever experienced. It tasted like dirt or smoke or something, but it won't go away. The bottle says that it is an American Style IPA well I think that Belgium should stick to making their beers and not American Style. Cause Our IPA's don't taste like SHIT! THIS ONE SURE DOES.
Score;1.99 (id give it lower but it smelled like heaven)

Poured from a bottle. The beer is amber/dark orange with a decent sized head on it. The head retains itself for a good amount of time and you see some decent lacing as it recedes. The aroma consists of citrus, hops, a bit of sweet fruit, and a hint of malt and caramel. When drinking it, you taste hops and some sour fruit right off the bat. I also picked up a slight malty and earthy flavor and it finishes a little bitter. The carbonation seems to work well with the beer.

All in all, it wasn't bad. I liked the smell of the beer but the bitterness lingered a bit longer than I would like. I did enjoy the single hop aspect, though.

Poured from a chilled bottle into my Uprising chalice at Novare Res. It has an opaque, dark orange appearance. There is a thin white head. There is no visible carbonation, but it is a dark beer, so any rising bubbles may be hidden from view. The aroma is surprising. I can smell sweet malts and some fruity hops. They work very well together. It has a crisp, dry bitter flavor. It's very hoppy! It starts out bitter, then bitter flavors return anew in the finish. Not surprisingly, there is a bitter aftertaste as well. It actually tastes slightly creamy at first. It has a world class level of flavor. It has a lighter medium body. It's hard to tell if the tickle I feel on my tongue is due to the carbonation or the bitter hops. It feels good either way. I find it to be very drinkable for a bitter beer. I wouldn't want an entire 4/6 pack, but I could easily finish this bottle. With just these 12 ounces, I won't get tired of the bitter hops.

A: Cloudy orange/amber, slight head.
S: Hop spice and citrus; some biscuit malt.
T: Earthy hops with some spice. Decent malt but clearly not the headliner. Some citrus-type sourness to it. dry finish with a harsh lingering bitterness.
M: Ample carbonation; medium bodied. Swish it around and it really froths up.
D: It is what the label says. This makes me realize Cascade hops needs a little help from his friends. It's good as a tool for training the palate, but not an IPA I'd turn to again.

Pours a lightly cloudy orange color with two fingers of sticky white head that lasts for a decent amount of time.

Scent of sour citrus, sweet fruit, leafy, spicy hops, and faint caramel. It has some qualities that would make it good, but it unfortunately falls quite short with the tartness.

Taste of spicy, grassy hops, earth, dry sugar, some caramel, and sour fruit. As the scent let on, there is a distinct sourness here as well, taking away from what would otherwise be considered a good beer.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and fairly tight with a noticeable dryness, one of the only redeeming qualities, but not enough to save it.

poured a hazy orange into my snifter. thin head that hangs around for a while. smells like a fresh grapefruit, with some sweet malt in there too. taste is pretty hop forward without being overwhelmed with bitterness. grapefruity, citrusy and a touch malty. finish is dry with a little bitter hops at the tail end. body is average at best, maybe a little too thin. Pours a somewhat murky copper orange color with a 1.5 finger head that lasts just a little while before fading away and leaving a medium amount of lacing.

Aroma reveals some clear citrus notes along with a malty tone that was a little more dominant than expected.

Taste reveals a mild bitterness with some grapefruit and lemon upfront, caramel malt in the middle and an earthy finish. I couldn't decide if I particularly liked the taste at first but over time it grew on me and ultimately I found it fairly pleasing.

Medium body with the right amount of carbonation. Overall I found this one to taste a little weird from the first sip but by the time I was half through, I realized how much I was enjoying it. Not one I'd be picking up again but a fun experiment as I continue down the Mikkeller Single Hop line.

The beer pours a hazy amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice pale, crystal, and bisquit malt scent along with a mild Cascade hop aroma. It's bitter, yet well balanced with a bready malt character. The taste is decent. It has a very weird taste. The malts are present, but the hops are super powerful, creating an almost soapy character. There is also an earthy taste in the finish. It's almost like a burnt, Scottish Ale taste. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a pretty good IPA. I'm a little put off from the burnt aspect, but the hop character is strong. Also, I'm a big fan of the single hop IPA's.
