I wish I hadn't read about the coffee used in this beer.

Appearance. Pours pitch black with 1.5 fingers of dark tan head that leaves some great lacing.

Smell. Molasses, dark coffee, roasty malts, and a little licorice.

Taste. Dark roasted malts, dark coffee and unsweetened chocolate, a little bit of licorice and sweet tobacco. Only a little sweetness overall and quite bitter.

Mouthfeel. Fairly full body with smooth lower carbonation.

Overall. This is one big bad roasty stout. Bad in a good way, of course! ;-P I really enjoyed it, despite knowing that some of what went into my mouth was pooped out by a rat-like creature...

100th review...I decided to go with something that has been sitting in the cellar for a while.

Bottle purchased in 2010

Pours black as the night with a good sized mocha head. I noticed some strange large chunks during the pour which is where the points off came from.

Smells of faint hops lots of chocolate malt slight coffee scent

Taste is sweet velvety milk chocolate....almost like a chocolate malt milkshake. This tastes like a grown up version of young's double chocolate stout. The coffee notes are barely existent but it has a very nice roast character.

Mouthfeel is amazing but oatmeal used right always seems to give that nice creamy texture. Carbonation is right where it should be.

Overall this is an amazing beer it has aged like a champ and over the last 2 years has transformed into a completely different beer.

A - Pours with one finger of light tan foam on top of an opaque, back body. As the head recedes it leaves light lace on the glass.

S - An aroma of chocolate, coffee, smoke, and, oddly, gunpowder (think of the smell after fireworks are set off).

T - Smoky, dark coffee flavors with a touch of caramel and burnt toffee. Some spicy notes of clove and cinnamon in the middle and more burnt, smoky character. Finishes with dark sugar, burnt malt and gunpowder like coffee flavor.

M - Medium-thick coffee, moderately low carbonation, and a fairly dry finish.

D - Smoky and complex with an oddly spicy smoke character that I keep describing as gunpowder. Really complex and smoky. Very interesting, though I don't know if it is worth the effort of seeking out such a rare brew.

A: thin dark tan head that dissipates rapidly on a jet black body with no light passing through.

S: rich, dark roast coffee, dark chocolate. The coffee has a very nice tangy character to it. aroma is nicely strong.

T: the coffee flavors are unlike others I have had. These are dry and espresso like but with a smokey, tangy and sweet note as well. Very unique.

M: medium body and moderate carbonation, smooth with a semi dry finish and coffee lingering deep into the aftertaste.

Overall: This is a very unique beer. For coffee lovers this is a must try beer. Very memorable

Bottle around 2 years old.

A: Pitch black with a medium-sized and densely packed medium brown head. Leaves a nice solid wall of foam as it slowly fades away.

S: Rich roasted coffee with a bunch of bitter chocolate. Lots of oatmeal too.

T: Loads of coffee mixed with some char, semi-sweet and smooth with the oatmeal. Turns bitter as the oatmeal fades. Briefest touch of dark fruit in the middle. Some bitter chocolate and ash in the finish. More lingering roasty bitterness between sips.

M: Heavy, slick and oily. A bit drying from the lingering bitterness.

O: Not as overpowering in the coffee as with Beer Geek Breakfast. Still quite strong but not ridiculously so. Better balanced but not great. Quite bitter overall for such a big stout. Probably great for a coffee lover, however.
