A - 4 - dark brown black beer with an initial mocha head that immediately fades to nothing.
S - 4 - coffee, roasted malts, chocolate, oatmeal, nothing too crazy or special
T - 4 - again, coffee, oatmeal, roasted malts, chocolate, plus maybe a tiny bit of burnt flavors, even burnt rubber
M - 4 - its' pretty creamy and chocolate milkshake like, but I'm finding with coffee stouts that the coffee decreases the complexity a lot of the time because it's overpowering. Thick mouthfeel tho, alc covered, aftertaste = coffee.
O - 4 - I'd love to try this with the other coffee stouts (Founders Breakfast Stout, Santa Fe Imperial Java Stout) and see whose shines above the rest.

not sure how i have missed this base version, i have had a number of its barrel aged variants, and loved every expensive drop. this one is far less intimidating both in price and in looks in the glass. its not so black or so dense, less concentrated than those little bottles of heaven. bakers chocolate in color, oatmeal colored and textured head with excellent retention. a handful of yeast bits in to the bottom of the glass are noticeable if i really focus in on them. the aroma of this beer is great, but not as coffee forward as i expected it to be, or as i remember the others being. its sweet and subtle coffee, no bitterness at all, just a little of that from the high levels of roasted barley here. more earthy than bitter, with a chocolate milky sweetness towards the end. the flavor agrees with the nose, and the coffee serves only to accent, not flavor, this brew. i love the frothy sweetness in the finish, which is inextricably linked to its velvety and expansive texture. i get almost toasted marshmallow in this, more like a cappuccino rather than a normal cup of joe, lots of milk froth type balance to this. for a big black stout this is remarkably elegant, with well hidden alcohol strength and a pillowy mouthfeel that stays on the tongue. gently flavored with the coffee too, an enormously difficult task in brewing from what i understand. world class coffee stout, with very few equals, but i prefer the barrel aged variants, they take this to the next level. really nice to finally have the base beer through.

Appearance: an aggressive pour gave the beer a brown thumb width size head. Decent retention. The beer itself is black. Not a bad lacing as the beer is consumed.
Aromatics: Strong notes of coffee and bitter chocolates. Some very dark and rich malts.
Flavor: This is a sort of attack on the senses. The chocolate is hitting my tongue and making me think very sweet, whole the coffee is given me both roasted and burnt flavors. The coffee flavors give off a very dry sensation on the palate. There is a touch of hop tart.
Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is very smooth on the tongue but very dry in my throat. It's almost bordering on harsh. It absolutely makes me want to drink more to clear my throat.
