Bottle snagged from an Edmonton liquor store, poured into a standard ol' pub glass. Curious to see how this old school, grassy/herbal, likely on the way out hop variety comes across in one of these malt-forward Mikkeller concoctions. Brew is quite dark, a ruddy brown amber with around a half inch of creamy beige foam that leaves a thick residue on the glass like a half-consumed milkshake. Aroma is sweetly malty like most other Mikkeller single hops, toffee and a hint of chocolate although there is also an assertive herbal hop note, flowers and pine with faint tangerine. Smells cleanly bitter. People seem to taste all kinds of different stuff in this one and I am getting more citrus than on the nose, predominantly lemon I'd say, chamomile tea, underripe plum, fresh bitter herbs. Not super piney or fruity as one might expect, with a nice clean bitterness. Thick bodied with a pleasant malty toast and cereal backdrop. The tea-like green bitterness builds up nicely and near the end I am wanting a second. Not bad for such a workmanlike non-sexy hop. Almost getting a ginger-like floral spicy heat in the finish. The malts are intrusive, a little, but not overly so. My expectations were not that high and this exceeded them handily. Try to appreciate the traditional flavors.

330mL bottle

I never mention bitterness in my reviews, my bitterness taste buds are ridiculously under-sensitive.

APPEARANCE : Orange mahogany with a hint of a reddish hue. Generous head that falls down at an average speed, leaving a healthy dose of not-so-tough looking lacing. Doesn't disappear completely, settles into a thin layer on top of the beer. Pretty much what I expected from an American IPA.

SMELL : First nose is hops and malts, with the malt having the upper hand by a hair's breadth. There's something that reminds me of banana cake and spices. Barely any booze. Second nose made my eyebrows rise : herbs kind of came out of nowhere. Something almost like (???) vegetable broth? Probably from the nugget. Definite smell of cocoa/mocha. I'd be curious to know what malts they used. Third nose brings out the herbs even more, and some nutmeg can clearly be smelled. Still barely any booze.

TASTE : Lots of herbs as can be expected from the nugget hops. Also some candied orange. The malt is well balanced and supports the hops very nicely.

MOUTHFEEL : Just round enough for what this beer is trying to be. Nice length.

OVERALL : A very good beer worthy of Mikkeller, but not their best. I understand that they weren't trying to make the best beer out there but simply to provide beer-enthusiasts out there with a series of single-hop IPAs that were made the exact same way, except for the hop varieties. Just for this, I'll raise this beer's score to account for the whole series and what it accomplishes.
