XicanoBeerRun came through with another goodie. Psychedelic label and clever name aside, I have no idea what I’m getting into here. But sometimes it’s good to come in with no expectations.
This beer pours with virtually no foam. It’s cloudy, hazy, yeasty. Split a 12 ounce bottle with XicanoBeerRun and we both commented how the same beer looked so different in our separate glasses. Who poured first? Who got the last of the bottle? Here it makes a big difference.

There’s such a vibrant, yeasty, estery aroma on the nose. Really, it gives meaning to the term ‘bouquet’. And what a wonderful bouquet it is! Really, really appealing.

The flavors carry though to the palate. It’s a complex beer, but in a good way. Great body, wonderful mouthfeel, and I don’t get a hint of the 9.30% abv in the least. A light summer fruitiness comes through on the palate, but not sweet. More on the savory side.

This beer tastes terrific. Great finish, almost oaky or barrel aged in its smoothness with a bit of funk to keep it exciting. Well-balanced. It’s complex but rewarding.

A-Pours a hazy copper color. A thin but dense head that randomly serves up lacing. The lacing is chunky.

S-It smells sweet and Belgiany with some decent funkiness. Hints of Belgian spice and noticeable Belgian yeast.

T-The nose was pretty funky, maybe even tart but the flavor is less inspiring. The sweetness takes over and the funkiness really dies off. Belgian yeast tang, spices, and a generic sweetness that is equate to something like rock candy.

M-Medium bodied with some heat on the finish. A little bit sticky. Higher carbonation.

O-I was intrigued by the nose then it really fell off after first taste. Too sweet and not funky enough for me. If the flavor was closer to the nose I would have enjoyed it more.

Appearance: Carmine/rosewood body with a beige/isabelline head.

Aroma: Earthy, sweet, spicy - notes of blackcurrants, cherries, raspberries, and hint of caramel.

Taste: Much like the aroma, only with the inclusion of raisins, apples, and cinnamon.

Mouthfeel: Tart with a fair amount of carbonation.

Overall: I've not had many wild ales, but this one - for want of a better phrase - is awesome, particularly for spring/summer.

Serving type: on-tap

750 mL bottle poured into a pint.

Appearance - Deep orange. Big cream colored head. Retains forever. Lace sticks to the glass.

Smell - Tropical fruit. Sweet doughy malts. Some brett. Very yeasty, to the point that it detracts.

Taste - Bretty up front. No tang, just some earthiness. Sweet caramel, more rich and deep than the smell. Tropical fruit sweetness in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Medium heavy. Medium carbonation. A little sweet.

Overall - Not an interesting beer, but it's tasty.

A 330ml bottle with a BB of March 2018. Picked up quite a while back from Trembling Madness in York. The name and Danish description don't give much away - what the hell is this?

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Bottle conditioned. A bright reddish-amber hue with faint haze and good carbonation. Some sediment visible. Yields a huge head of creamy off-white foam that lasts for a while before reducing to a thick surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of sweet, spicy malt; brings to mind a Christmas ale. Hints of clove, cinnamon, ginger, spice, caramel, sugar, funkiness, mild vinegar and earthy yeast. Faintly vinous and rather complex - intriguing.

Tastes of spicy caramel malt and funky yeast with a sweet, lingering finish. Notes of clove, cinnamon, spicy phenolics, caramel, sugar, mild dried fruit, subtle funk, earthy yeast and a twinge of vinegar. Slightly sour, with a yeasty, herbal character upon swallowing. Little bitterness to speak of. Mouthfeel is smooth and lightly tingly, with soft carbonation and a velvety body. Vaguely astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of harsh, herbal spice, sweet caramel and yeast.

Nice but weird, not to mention hard to categorise. A sweet 'n sour beer. Looks good, while the aroma and flavour are distinctly spicy and sweet. A mélange of caramel malt, spice and mild funk. Decent body though a shade more effervescence would improve the texture. The ingredient list doesn't include any specific spices, so I presume the flavour is entirely the work of the yeast. Quite incredible, as the spice is enough to make you think of a Christmas beer. Anyway, an unusual but well-rounded effort from Mikkeller. If you like funk and/or spice then this is for you. Worth sampling if you come across it.
