Picked up all 19 of the Mikkeller Single Hop Series beers at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Slightly cloudy copper-amber pour with two finger head with nice retention and great lacing. Sweet toasty caramel malt in the nose is nicely complemented by a subtle citrus note along with hints of earthy biscuit and tea. The sweet caramel malt comes through first in the taste, with a piney, herbal hop bite to follow along with hints of tea and orange zest. Mouthfeel is crisp and tangy with great bitter finish. Another solid offering from Mikkeller.

This beer was a hazy dark amber color with a thick white head. There was a good deal of lace.

A pleasant sweet aroma. A lot of citrus, and a little bit of pine.

Citrus forward in the taste. Grapefruit and tangerine. Still fairly sweet. Some piney hops late.

Hoppy, but not overly so. A little bit viscous.

This was a nice beer to drink.

The beer pours a hazy orange color with a white head. The aroma is a mix of pine and orange citrus hops. The flavor is more piney and resiny hops with some medium bitterness. I only get a little bit of citrus hops in the flavor, after expecting quite a bit after initially smelling the beer. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A dark gold color with a little bit of red to orange running around in it. Taste the rainbow I guess. Ample head, very compact, thick and clingy, like Snooki. A little bit of pine, and some kind of unidentified fruit sweet smell (apple?).

Taste was a little bit lacking hop presence, but Amarillos seem to be more about aroma hops than anything else. Was very dry, that was nice, didn't weigh heavily at all. Grassy at times.

Lost some drinkability points for being expensive $5+ a bottle.

Bottle from Green's on Ponce in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy orange-copper color with a 1.5-finger off-white head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving decent lacing.

Smells of grapefruit hops with equal amounts of mild pine and tropical fruits. As the beer warms the tropical fruit aromas intensify.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Pale malt flavors up front quickly yield to grapefruit and mild tropical fruit hop flavors. The hops carry through to a solidly bitter ending. The hop flavors gain complexity as the beer warms with additions of earthy pine flavors.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a solid thickness with moderate carbonation.

Drinkability is very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall this was certainly one of the better single-hop beers I've had from the series. Definitely worth a shot.

Enjoyed at the International Tap House Mikkeller Single Hop night.

Recipe from Mikkeller:

6.9% ABV
67% Pilsner, 11% Cara, 11% Munich II, 11% Oats
Hop additions were at 60 minutes, 15 minutes, whirlpool, then dry hopped for 100 IBUs.
1056 yeast
Started at 1.063, finished at 1.010

Since the malt in all of these beers are the same, Im going to focus just on the hops...

Flowers on the aroma, some earth and dirt as well.
Starts sweet and citrusy, finishes with an earthy lemongrass and pleasant pine.

Personally, it would be best used as a flavoring hop for me in a homebrew...

For an Amarillo which I've been told means double hopped IPA(might be wrong) this deceptively smooth.

A strong beer marked as 6.9% but doesn't seem to be knocking me over with the bitterness as some of the recent American IPA's (my current taster of choice) have been doing.

Almost as if to say you want to give your friend a strong IPA to taste test this could be the go.

Creamy, Lovely look and soft smell as well as an appertizing taste and mouthfeel.

Somewhere between 4 & 4.5 stars.

The single hop Amarillo IPA from Mikkeller is a dull orange beer. The color is muted and the liquid is hazed giving it an all around desaturated look. The head is the best part of the appearance as a vibrant tan with a sticky consistency.

The nose is a pungent hop scent that starts out earthy and pine like. There is amongst a sweet toasted malt an almost apple cider scent. I'm thinking that this one isn't as fresh as the Columbus bottle I just tried but since there is no bet by date I can only guess as to the freshness.

The flavor is like a malty tea with an earthy herbed presence. Gone are the pine allusions and in fact most of the hop profile is not present in the taste. Again this could be an old batch or mis handled. On the pessimist side this could just be a lackluster beer.

Even the mouthfeel is average with not much hop astringency. There is some pinch there but again muted. After the Columbus single hop this Amarillo is poor by comparison. I like the hop and use it in home brewing but never on it's own. I would try this one again just to dispell the thought of it being a bad batch but as of now this is a simple average beer and one I would pass in the stores.

I picked this one up with the Mikkeller Citra IPA as they were new in stock in a store that gets good turnover, but they didn't taste very new, alas.

Pours a nice dark orange with two fingers of sticky off white head that lingers as a thick cap. The smell is pleasantly fruity, it took me a moment to place the smell but when I realized it was lychee that was all I smelled. The taste was merely bitter with an alcoholic bite, all the sweet tropical fruit from the nose has dissapeared. The mouthfeel was strange, bubbly and flaccid. Overall the unique lychee smell on the nose was pleasant but the poor taste and drinkability of this beer made it not worth finishing.

330ml bottle, 6.9% ABV.

This beer pours a hazy, glassy medium golden amber hue, with three fat fingers of puffy, foamy pale beige head, which forms an inverted cupcake island as it sinks away, with some frizzy splotches of lace dripping down the sides of the glass.

It smells of strong bitter citrus, a bit muddled between grapefruit, orange, and a more exotic tropical fruitiness, and equally pungent caramel cream malt. The taste brings some mild pine resin into the citrus bitterness equation, with a warm nondescript spicy tingle, and the malt takes on a more bready, caramelized toffee nature. The elevated booze gets hidden behind all the aforementioned ado.

The carbonation is fairly reserved, and unobtrusive, the body a decent medium weight, and just a wee bit clingy, but generally smooth. It finishes with a zingy citrus/floral bitterness, tempered less so now by the waning malt.

It's clear from this particular single-hop experiment, that the Amarillo variety is a common ingredient in the IPAs that I normally enjoy - fruit, spice, and a bit of green earthiness. Thanks for the instructional deconstruction, Mikkeller!

Bottle expiring April 2011. Pours a huge fluffy head in my Sam Adams full size glass. Orange-tangerine aromas. Creamy mouthfeel, ornage with a bit of grapefruit rind... highly drinkable...to the last drop. Great IPA, about as good as it gets. A bit of tongue tingling, and some drying in the aftertaste.

Poured from an 11.2 oz bottle into a pint glass- pours a slightly hazy copper/orange color with a beautiful and creamy one-finger off-white head. Exceptional retention and nice sticky lacing.

Smell is sweet and hoppy- nice pale malt, a little caramel, good grapefruit hops and a little candy.

Taste is fantastic- it's got everything; sweet, spicy, and a little something extra. To me, it seems like there's a kick of spearmint at the end. Up front, nice malty sweetness and caramel, followed by some floral and citrusy hops, finishing semisweet/semidry.

Mouthfeel is great- very refreshing. Light to medium body with moderate carbonation (not prickly, very smooth and creamy). This is a fantastic example of the style (and it's brewed by Europeans at that!)- not a bold one but a very delicate balance of flavors. GET IT NOW!

Pours caramel with a thumb of tan head. Good lacing & head retention

S: Leafy hops, apples

T: Pears, leafy & herbal hops, some woody notes & green apples up front. More green apples & woody hops as this warms along with a bit of lemon zest & grapefruit in even smaller amounts . Finishes with woody & herbal hops, a touch of pears & not much else

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation, okay balance

Easy enough to drink, but this doesn't really make me think Amarillo Hops, may be an old bottle, but the dating code is too f-ing cryptic for me

Cap date: 04/11/11 Served from bottle into a Dogfish Head Signature glass. Poured hazy red-orange with a two finger off-white head that subsided to one finger slowly. Maintained phenomanol lacing throughout. The aroma was comprised of malt and a piney/sweet hop note. The flavor was of malt, and a subtle piney hop. It had a medium feel on tha palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a very very smooth American IPA. Flavors were really well balanced. This is probably my third favorite in the series that I've tried thus far.

Pours a hazy burnt orange, huge creamy head with great lacing. Smells of floral hops, some citrus. Tastes of sweet pilsner malt with some caramel as well. Hops comes through in the bitterness lending floral and some piney notes. Fairly pronounced bitterness leads to a fairly dry finish. Nice crisp mouthfeel.

A solid beer, really showcases the amarillo hop. I'm definitely going to try the other single hop beers of theirs.
