09/25/13 From bottle at Rattle n Hum, NYC.

My only preconception here was that I'm not crazy about hops that don't know their place. They should be smelled but not tasted.

Not so in this instance. Perhaps it's due to the lack of competition on the tongue. From this I see exactly what Amarillo hops taste like especially when not competing for the spotlight.. Nice but once was enough.

Bottle poured into tulip glass. An orange-bronze amber color much like other Mikkeller single hops, with a large frothy honeycomb-like beige head. Aroma is equal parts citrus and tropical, mainly orange and caramelized pineapple, cantaloupe melon, vitamin C tablet or baby aspirin, and green forest floor detritus. Little overt malt aroma, which is unusual in these brews. Palate is similar, quite green, tart, and bitter, with a subtle toffee sweetness that is substantially less than other Mikkeller single hop IPAs. Grapefruit and orange pith, aspirin, melon and lime rinds, unripe stone fruit and faint pine dominate the proceedings, not much in the way of sweetness. Nice enough mouthfeel, semi-chewy body, makes the palate tingle with hop oils, and a crisp bitter finish with hints of gooseberry and more citrus pith. I must admit that this one is not a favorite, I'd prefer the hops to be fruitier and less caustically medicinal. Aroma does improve as one drinks, with more sweetness emerging and even a little nuttiness. These Mikkeller brews are indeed an interesting exercise in how the same malt backbone and fermentation regime can yield such different flavors as a function of the hop used.

poured from 12 oz glass to saxo tulip glass

A:poured dark golden brown. slightly murky with a tan/khaki head about 2 fingers that lingered around for awhile

S: great stone fruit/caramalized pineapple/tropical citrus

T:fairly deep almost roasty malty hoppy. almost a pure cane sugar cola syrup after taste

M:good mouthfeel, thin enough to be easy, thick enough to hang around long enough to not overstay its welcome

O: good beer, would drink again for sure
