Sampled this beer on draft with an almost full line-up of the Single Hop series (Amarillo, Cascade, Chinook, East Kent, Nelson Sauvin, Nugget, Simcoe, Tomohawk, Warrior. No Centennial.) at Max's Taproom in Baltimore on 4/24/10.

A lot going on with this hop. Tons of citrusesque bitterness. At first I didn't enjoy this one in the series as much, but that seemed to change as I was about half way through. Possibly as my senses got muted to the more delicate flavors this became more enjoyable. I was surprised to notice that what I liked at first was not always a favorite at the end. I blended this with the nugget single hop for a tasty beer to finish the series with.

Poured into a pint.
A: Moderate pour yields 1 finger off-white rocky head with great retention. Hazy orange-crimson liquid. I retained the last little bit in the bottle due to sediment.
S: Slight cardboard under it all. Fruit esters, pine, citrus hops highlighted. Too much alcohol, not enough hops.
T: Caramelly sweetness opens well with flat cardboard/sherry. Slight raisin. Bitterness soon rushes in with citrus dominating the profile - both grapefruit and tangerine. Slight sulfurous allium flavor at the end, almost garlic-y. Tasty but not world class.
M: bitter and a tad astringent, maybe numbing even. Almost chewy, full.
O: Fairly solid, nicely very bitter IPA. A tad old unfortunately, but tasty for the most part. I'd have another pint, but i won't buy another bottle.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... I know... It's old. But it's been in my fridge for over 2 years (first batch).

A: Pours the standard redish/orange amber that almost all of these single hop beers look like. There is about a half finger of off-white head that leaves a good amount of lacing along the glass as it drinks.

S: The nose is sweet, earthy, and tropical. I get some nice mango and light citrus from this brew. It's also a bit musty.

T: It starts out sweet, but not too malty. There is a decent fruit presence, but nothing specific. The fruity sweetness carries through until the finish, where is has a bitter kick.

M: Medium bodied beer. It's sweet and fruity from the start, and those flavors shine through until the beer is off the palate. The finish is bitter, but not overbearing, and it's not particularly drying.

O: Decent enough. I'd drink this one again. I like how the slight tropical notes mellow out the malty sweetness without making it crazy drying in the finish.

Review from 3/2011 notes. Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a cloudy orange amber. Nice thick off-white head and heavy lacing. Hop and sweet malt aroma. Flavor follows with a sharp hop bite, malt and grapefruit flavors. Bitter hoppy finish, but nice progression. I like the Chinook hops. Sharp and piney with a bit of earthy flavor. I'm going to have to compare these all single hops at the some time.

11.6 oz. bottle poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint Glass. The liquid portion itself is an amber/red color with a glowing light orange when held up to the light. Very good clarity, you can completely see through it. White frothy head with some pretty good lacing to it.

Smell is really good. Hops will jump right out at you without being overly agressive. Citrusy, herbal, floral, and a sweet piney. Pale caramel malts provide a gentle sweetness to the nose.

Taste is also very good, on par with the smell maybe just a little bit unde. Pale malts present again that provide sweetness. NOt as hoppy as I expected based on the smell, but hoppy enough. CItrus is the dominant flavor of the chinook hop in this beer, followed by some zest and pine.

Mouthfeel is good. Lighter bodied with a very clean feel, smooth and a good carbonation level. Has a clean bitter finish, very nice. This is a very drinkable IPA, well balanced and can hold up with any of the other Mikkeller sinble hop brews which is saying a lot.
