Poured into an impy nonic pitch black,no light showing thru this,a fluffy mocha colored crown atop that left broken chunks of lace behind as it setteled slowly into a frothy mass.Big hop resin mixed molasses sweetness just awesome,this is truly a hybrid of stout and ABA.Chocolate malts and tobacco flavors mixed with a healthy shot of pine resin on the palate,some molasses-like sweetness comes into play but doesn't intrued on the resiny hops.I have the hop burps wich makes me like this beer even more,a great example of the style,one of the best I have had.

A - Pours pitch black and slick, with three fingers of dense brown head. Head has excellent retention and coats the glass with lacing.

S - Very prominent pine hop aroma. I didn't even smell any coffee initially, but eventually the strong roasty coffee notes come through. Also quite a bit of bitter chocolate.

T - The name certainly doesn't lie. Tastes like a hopped up Beer Geek Breakfast. Quite bitter throughout. The combination of piney hops, bitter roasted coffee and bitter chocolate is a bit over the top, but still quite tasty. I wish there was just a touch of sweet milk chocolate to smooth it out.

M - Medium mouthfeel is dry and bitter throughout. Bitterness lingers for quite some time.

O - Glad I tried this, and it is pretty tasty. The intense hop bitterness almost moves this into black ale territory. A bit of added sweetness would bump this up a notch for me, but still a good brew.

This stuff is good. Ordered it at Mikkeller Bar in San Francisco. Readily available, obviously.

A - Black, simple tan head. Thick but leaves out some of the sticky features of other stouts.

S - Blackest of coffees. Like waking up in the morning and someone had brewed fresh coffee. No creamer mixed into this one. Hops are easily present. This smells like fresh coffee while camping in a forest thick with pine trees. Just such a fantastic smell. Spring camping and Sunday mornings are the first things that come to mind.

T - There is the black coffee again. It's good. Especially if you enjoy coffee. No vanilla or chocolate that you get with other stouts. The hops come full force on this one. Reminded me of a Double IPA in a weird way. I see why it is called Hop Breakfast. I give it props for matching the name.

M - Simple feel. Fresh and doesn't feel like processed beverages. Not too sticky, but not super thin.

O - If you really want that hoppy stout with a strong coffee flavor, get this; don't think twice, get it. If you prefer your stouts smooth with some vanilla, chocolate, and spice, well this is still worth a try. Great brew from a great brewer.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours a dark brown color with red highlights and a tan head. The aroma is great. I get a lot of caramel and roasted malt with some pine and citrus hops. The flavor is roasted/burnt malt, coffee and chocolate, but I also get a lot of bitter pine and orange notes. The alcohol is completely hidden. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice hoppy stout.

A 500ml bottle with date [M.h.t. 1/3-2012]; not sure how to interpret this, although it suggests the bottle is quite old. Acquired a couple of weeks ago from Beer Merchants (UK).

Poured into a Duvel tulip. Unfathomable blackness - no photon escapes it's clutches. Produces a huge head of creamy brown foam with good retention; this ultimately subsides to a surface layer. A rich aroma of coffee - strong and bitter - accompanied by plentiful roasted malt. Notes of burnt grain and stewed hops, with indistinct hints of aromatic hops. A whiff of alcohol in the background.

Tastes of intense bitter coffee and roasted malt. Notes of roasted coffee and malt, burnt grain, stewed hops, a hint of pine and faint dry yeast. Exceptionally bitter; kills off half your taste buds. The alcohol doesn't make itself felt in the flavour. Mouthfeel is smooth and tingly with decent body, yet it leaves the impression that it is thinner than it should be for such a big beer. Very astringent; dries the palate completely. Bitter coffee aftertaste.

A quality stout, though it falls just short of superb. The hop flavour doesn't really come across - subtle hints that are smothered by an excess of coffee. The mouthfeel also seems a tad thin. However, the coffee/malt character are without deficiency. All in all, a beer that strives for greatness and is found wanting. Which isn't to say that it's bad - grab one if you can stomach the price.

Dark brown pour, good tan lace and head to it. Aroma was very much like the regular Beer Geek Breakfast, but it did have a good bitter hop green vegetal vibe, no small feat since this beer comes from halfway across the world and you have no idea how long the relatively expensive beer may have sat on the shelf etc. . .

Taste, again, more like Beer Geek Breakfast, this is a very minor and subtle variation frankly, but that's not all bad since the base beer is quite good. Same beer, more hops. That's really about it. Loads of chocolate malt, coffee, ashy bitterness.

Visually really really appealing, pitch black body flowing huge tan head frothing above the sides of my chalice, fine even lacing as it slowly fades. Aroma has dark chocolate bitterness and hint of pine and citrus tone hops in the background with a somewhat creamed coffee in the middle. Bitterness unwavering bitterness green hops assault the palate with a pelletized hop concentration black malts (mainly black patent bring out the charcoal and roasted malt bitterness) so there's a bit of a tag team combo hitting me hard right now. I really couldn't tell you they used oatmeal, but dark bitter coffee, dark malts, and hops are screaming hello!!! Mouthfeel never gets past any one of the waves of bitterness it coats all dimensions of the palate, medium bodied even solid carbonation no issues there just the lacquer known has beer hop breakfast is left behind coating the entire palate with a lingering unbalanced bitterness. Overall I wish the gypsy brewer had a stroke of finesse in his paint brush, maybe due to the country where the brewing scene is breaking out like a punk rock movement do most of these guys feel the need to brew this way. Believe me I like extreme beer I just like well balanced big beers.

Pours a beautiful ebony with a brown half a finger of head. Dissipates rather quickly. Surprised by the look of this that it's not actually a stout.

Aroma is amazing, sweet matly, burnt biscuit, heavy coffee, dark chocolate. Slight hop aroma in there somehow coming through. Just great.

Very delicious. Chocolate and coffee are most prevalent. Sweetness abound! Hops are on the back end and very subtle at that. No date on the bottle so hops could have faded a bit. Tastes more like a hoppy stout than a black IPA but it's still great.

Very thick and rich, stout-like again. Aftertaste has a lingering bitterness that rounds it out nicely.

This was my first try at Mikkeller and I'm so glad that I know how good they can be. Probably the best black IPA I've had although it's more like a stout. But really great stuff.

Teku glass. Bottle. Pitch black with moch-like, densed head. Medium head retention. Very good lacing. Rich aroma of roasted malts - mainly coffee combined with medium to high hops aroma (resin, light grapefruit, pine), some dried fruits in the background. Taste is great. Medium to high hop bitterness. Solid malt and oat flavour. Little coffee acidity. Medium body, medium carbonation, creamy/oily texture, semi-dry. Semi-bitter, semi-dry, coffee finish. Great.

500ml skinny-ass bottle, yet still a tall drink of water, as per usual for the Mikkeller stouts...

This beer pours a complete black, no edges, no highlights, with one fat finger of seemingly foamy, tight beige head, which leaves a consistent pock-marked wall of lace around the glass as it duly settles. It smells of chocolate milk powder, mildly toasted caramel malt, and somewhat mild citrus hops. The taste is much bigger on the bitter citrus hops, which, together with an increasingly prevalent dry coffee grounds essence, takes over the whole front of the palate, eventually giving way to an equally strong, but somehow subservient, sweet chocolate malt, all overlooked by a soft, and seemingly toothless, alcohol edge. The carbonation is fairly light, with just a bit of spritzy effervescence, the body medium heavy in weight, a sugary smooth effect taking place - but for the citrus bitterness edge. It finishes still unabashedly sweet, but tempered all the same, with a not willing to die indeterminately bitter hoppiness.

What we have here, is a failure to, um, well, a failure to differentiate between a silky oatmeal coffee stout and the American IPA-ization of such. Bully for me - I likes 'em both just fine.

16.9oz bottle, served in a small tulip

A - pours with about an inch of dense, creamy khaki colored foam, falling ever so slowly down the glass and leaving a thin coating behind. the beer is pretty much pitch black.

S - freshly pressed, yet lightly roasted coffee dominate the front half. notes of toasted nuts, milk chocolate, and lightly grassy hops.

T - heavy on the coffee, though coming through much much stronger than the nose especially in the finished. attempted to be balanced by roasted malts and minerals. sweetness struggles but a slight bit of lactose and chocolate make it through.

M - wonderfully full body with ample yet controlled carbonation. slightly creamy through the finish, with a bit of a bitter hoppy finish. great here.

D - really liked this one front to back. great dessert beer and might be even better for breakfast. only downside is the pricetag ($11.99). as far as coffee stouts go, this can hold up to the best of them.

Bottle poured into Matilda glass. Pours thick black with small mocha head that fades to a collar. Very nice lacing. Smell is average, lots of slightly stale coffee, some noble hops, a touch of roasted malts. Taste is a lot better then the smell but nothing special. Coffee, bakers chocolate, hop bitterness that carries no other hop characteristics, some earthy hops and roasted malts as it warms. Mouthfeel is a bit on the thin side and to active of a carbonation. Not as silky as I would expect from an oatmeal stout. Overall a decent beer, but not worth the hefty price tag, but I suppose it delivers what it advertises - hoppy coffee stout.

Tasty coffee-ish beer. Very hoppy, above average mouthfeel.Bold rounded bitter taste, roasted malts, coffee, pine and citrus, and a drop of chocolate. Creamy mouthfeel, with above average head.Dry Roast in aftertaste.

Thanks to jtd1969 for splitting this bomber with me.

Pours a pitch black with a quarter of an inch of brown head that has great retention. The nose is roasty, herbal, citrusy, and has some notes of coffee. The flavor is herbal, piny, and citrusy up front with a good deal of hop character followed by roasted malts and coffee notes in the middle, and finishes with a faint, bitter astringency. The mouthfeel is thinner than the appearance and style would leave yoou to believe but it is smooth and well carbonated.

This isn't as robust or full bodied as I would have hoped, but it is smooth and flavorful. It's worth checking out.

Nose is slightly piney, mostly just stouty malt.

Big ol' hop bite which I anticipated by the name but not the name. Plenty of roast and some coffee malt.

Standard-ish mouthfeel, slightly bright.

A hoppy stout, but a good one.

Definite black colour with a coffee coloured head. Head retention is not great, but laces a little and is perfectly acceptable for a beer of this strength. Leaves a thin layer for the entire glass.

Massive notes of coffee and roasted malts. Licorice and pine-sap are also there for sure. Notes of nearly-burned caramel are there too, but much less so than the other elements.

An amazingly multi-faceted taste. The combination of the hop bitterness with the roasty grains and the strong coffee taste is superb. There are almost no big stouts that I enjoy which don't have at least a hint of chocolate in the flavour, but i'm not getting any here. Fantastic stout which certainly goes hard in the American direction - big, brash and bold. Punches well above it's weight in terms of flavour intensity for a 7.5% brew. Have tasted 9% beers which were much less intense than this.

Medium low carbonation combined with a very silky mouthfeel (i presume from the oats) gives a big, rich feeling as it slides down the palate. However, it seems reasonably well attenuated, with no overt residual sweetness or cloying qualities. This, combined with the prominent hop bitterness, makes it quite a clean, sharp finish. Strong notes of pine sap and black coffee remain for a long time after you finish a mouthful.

A very impressive beer, and one that has reminded me why I like Mikkeller so much.

Beer Hop Breakfast is a very dark, chocolate fudge color. Looks onyx. No light cuts through, even at the outermost edges. Impressive. An ominous, dark mocha colored head rests on top. It rises to about two fingers in height, and takes its time receding. A thick web of lace trails down the glass as it descends. Nicely done.

The nose is good. A bit more strength might carry it to the next level, but it’s definitely good as it is. A mix of chocolate and roasted malts. Roasted coffee/espresso notes smell delicious. There’s a burnt quality to it that adds character. Hops are certainly noted. They smell mostly piney with perhaps a touch of citrus notes. Alcohol is masked extremely well. It definitely smells nice.

The flavor is quite good. Roasted coffee and espresso flavors start things out very nicely. It does have an intense burnt, charred flavor. It’s a little too strong honestly. Those flavors mix pretty well with the chocolate and roasted malt base. The chocolate flavor is strictly bittersweet dark chocolate. A touch of sweet caramel is also noted. Hops are quite strong and add mostly piney, bitter flavors. There’s a bit of grapefruit and pineapple, but those flavors are subtle and secondary. Alcohol is subtle and largely unnoticed. Finishes bitter, a little charred, and dry.

Beer Hop Breakfast has a medium body. Carbonation is light and restrained. Ultimately, it goes down smooth and easy. I wouldn’t object to a bit more body, but it’s pretty good as it is. I don’t think this bottle will present much trouble. Going down too easy.

I was surprised and pleased to find this bottle of Beer Hop Breakfast. I hadn’t heard of it before. It’s a nice addition to their lineup. I’m a fan of hoppy stouts. The hop presence is very strong. The coffee/espresso/burnt flavors are as well. All in all, this is a very intense flavored beer. I’m enjoying it, and have no reservation recommending it.

Ordered a goblet for $8 at Top Hops in LES, NYC, and it made for a perfect fall beer. There was a deep, roasted malt character complemented by a sharp, citrus hop bite. The citrus hops didn't get much of a chance to stand out from the richly mocha barley, but they did blend in wonderfully for a long, lingering pine and cocoa finish. I like that the ABV isn't over the top, yet it's still a fantastic sipping beer. Get yourself a glass and let the dry cocoa, coffee bean, and American hops roll around on your tongue.

Oh boy, what the hell do I make of this beer?

As with all of Mikkeller's stouts, epic appearance. Dark body with a huge, billowy tan/brown head. The lacing has legs for miles, just pasting the sides of your glass.

Now this is where things start getting weird. What the hell is this aroma I'm smelling? Wow. It almost stings my nostrils -- huge fresh cut grass/pine aroma, backed up with roasty malt notes. Easily the most bizarre bouquet I've ever gotten from a beer. It's as if someone took fresh grass clippings, fresh pine needles and charcoal, and mashed them all together. It's extremely unique and 5 points for that I guess. But is it good? I'm not sure I like it at all. I'll split the difference...kind of.

Fortunately, the taste isn't quite as off-putting. Huge, huge hop notes, grass/pine, big roasty malt characteristics behind it. Again, I'm not sure I like it, but I definitely found it more approachable than the nose.

Mouthfeel is nice and full, creamy and good carbonation.

Truly a strange creation here. I'm very glad I tried it, but I can't imagine I'll ever buy this again.

Poured from a 1 pt .9 oz bottle into a pint glass- pours a thick, black color with a one finger mocha colored head. Good sudsy retention with excellent lacing.

The smell is pretty evenly divided between hops and dark and roasted malts. There is something a little strange (musty) but it's not bad.

The first taste is coffee, followed by roasted malt, then a little chocolate, finished off by some piney hops mixed with the dark malt and the coffee. Everything you would want in a stout but a little different.

Mouthfeel is very good- surprisingly slim bodied (I would say medium instead of full) for a stout, with light to medium carbonation and a dry finish. Great beer- perhaps not worth the pricetag.

Update: Definitely notice the coffee more throughout and there is a strong yeast flavor, it's maybe covered up by the other strong flavors.

S - Big piney and herbal hop kick, roasty and lightly chocolatey
T - Very hoppy with piney and bright herbs, bitter chocolate and coffee, big bitter flavours that work well in unison
M - Starts stout smooth and gets a big bitter kick to finish
O - a fantastic incorporation of hops in a big heavy stout, well worth a try and maybe even a second purchase

Pours a pitch black color with a big dense toasted khaki colored head that left a wall of lacing as the brew dissipated, beauty.

The aroma is of a roasted malt, milk chocolate, caramel, light char, and a fruity/leafy hop aroma. The hop flavor actually punches first but then the sweet stout notes come through. Quite interesting.

The flavor starts out all stout. Good roasted flavors which are softened and sweetened by the addition of the oatmeal. Some caramel notes as well as some coffee grinds. Some lovely coffee flavor. There is some sour fruit flavor as well. The hops don't add too much, some fruitiness and grassy bitterness.

The feel is full bodied with prickly carbonation. Smooth at first but finishes with a rugged bitterness. Between the roasted malt, coffee and hops, its quite bitter on the finish.

Another good breakfast stout from Mikkeller. Nice coffee flavor but too bitter for me to love this beer.

T - Hoppy! Big bitterness at first. Kind of mellowed out as I took a few more sips. Coffee, spicy, smokey, and piney flavors accompanied the hops.

M - Slightly carbonated. Medium body.

O - Interesting beer. The name 'Beer Hop Breakfast' does not lie. Very hoppy. The GF thought it was too hoppy/bitter and she loves a hoppy IPA. The hop bitterness was balanced with a nice coffee/smokey/spicy malt backbone. This beer is definitely worth a try.

Tap at Macs Steel Creek. Basic black, layer of light tan head. Just barely laced the glass.

Aroma, load of roast, very earthy. Light chocolate and nut.

Taste, oaky component really shoots through you sinuses. Lots of roast malt, coffee. Some anise and molasses. Can't help but think the hops have really faded. Listed as a black ale, buy this is a definitely a borderline stout. Not bad at all, just saying. The earthy, woody, chocolate covered walnut is very interesting.

Just to the light of mid bodied, nearly creamy. Drinks pretty easy, but there is a warming for only 7.5%. Wasn't sure what to expect with this, it is different but pretty good.
