First time I reviewed a beer that’s been retired. Which means I’ll probably never get to taste it again. Who knows how long it’s been on the shelf. Pours thick and dark brown just like coffee with a tan creamy head. Smells strongly of raisins, figs, and dates. I can’t really smell the coffee but I sure can taste it. Just like a hot black coffee even though I’m drinking it cold. Not a terribly rich flavor in fact it’s kind of flat and bitter. Mouthfeel is thick and bubbly. Overall I see why it’s called breakfast. It could substitute for my coffee. However I like a little milk and sugar in my coffee and this has neither.

Pours nearly black with close to an inch of thick, craggy froth. Interestingly, the pour presents a heterogeneous consistency that alludes to an abundance of lees, but I can't say that I saw any... Complex, pungent bouquet consists of coffee, milk chocolate, rye, toasted bread, and hops that are simultaneously citric, piney, and herbal. Sheets of reticulated lacing cling to the glass as the beer recedes.

The taste features roasted malt and coffee accompanied by bright, herbal hops with a mildly citric finish. Notes of bitter chocolate and toasted bread add an additional layer of complexity to the malt profile. Medium body and fine carbonation make for a smooth, velvety mouthfeel that's livelier on the back end than the front.

Overall, this is a classy BIPA that could easily pass for a hop-forward porter. It's balanced, complex, smooth, and has a winning presentation to match--no glaring flaws to speak of.

11.2 oz. bottle dated 10/10/16

Pours pitch black with dark maroon edges and a dense creamy light brown foam head. Smells like fresh grapefruit, lemon, orange citrus, roasted coffee, dark caramel, toffee, smoky molasses, dark chocolate, oats, with bitter woodsy floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like dark roasted espresso coffee, dark baking chocolate, smoky molasses, dark caramel, dark toffee, oats, fresh citrusy grapefruit, lemon, orange peel, with woodsy floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium bodied, creamy and smooth with moderate low carbonation. Overall a nice black IPA with coffee.

Great head retention, darker foam coloring, great lace.
Smells like hoppy coffee. Earthy hops mostly, I do believe.
Mouth feel is light. Basically it has the consistency of coffee.
Tastes like a cold, black coffee, with just the barest hint of hop.
Overall: a great beer for a keg n' egger.

The aroma is straightforward for those who've sampled the base beer: Beer Geek Breakfast with more hops. Notes of roast, espresso, dark chocolate, licorice and oats all make themselves known, yet (unsurprisingly) the piny hop bitterness ends up being the dominant note. Still, the hop bite never quite overpowers everything else. It tastes just like expected - though it starts off with some notes of roast, licorice, and oat, piny hops hit the ground running towards the middle and end. Pipe tobacco and espresso flavors finish it off. It's not as bitter as it could be, thankfully; it leaves an admirably balanced hoppy stout. Despite being bone dry and shockingly clean, it feels creamy and soft going down (though it's a mite thin). Carbonation is low. Sure it's expensive, but it's absolutely worth trying once - I actually like this more than the base version.

4.11/5: More hops = actually good?
