Poured very carbonated. Pitch black with a very thick mocha head.

Smell is reminiscent of Old Rasputin. Hints of coffee, toasted malts can be found, but all are fighting with a bitter alpha acid smell.

Initial taste is really just Beer Geek Breakfast. The hops come in later, adding just another layer of bitterness and notes of pine, almost a prickly bite. What it really adds is bitterness on the back end more than anything.

The mouthfeel is slightly oily, probably from the alpha acids.

Gotta say, I like Beer Geek Breakfast more, but this one isnt bad by any means.

Bottle 500 ml. Color back with small brown head. Aroma hop and only hop at first after some time you can smell some espresso. Taste coffee but so much coffee that dominates everything else, some hop, light chocolate. Strange beer a little unbalanced but i like it.

This is an excellent beer.
It poured deep deep brown with a tall, tan and firm head. Plenty of lacing, too. Aroma seemed a bit restrained here but plenty of rich roasted malts coffee and chocolate with a good dose of piney hop resin.
A good oatmeal stoudt here: loads of rich complex malts and anice and bright hoppiness of pine and oranges. A rich black coffee at the backend with a bitter dryer finish. On the pallette the beer is silky smooth and thick of body.
Starts sweet followed by a roasted malt bill followed by a dose of black coffee followed by a bright hoppy finish deep into the aftertaste.
This is my first Mikkeller and it was simply fantastic in all aspects.

Reviewed from notes...

A - Pours a deep brown with a two finger head. Head retention is excellent, and there is plenty of sticky lacing that clings to the glass. This one is sexy...

S - Roasted malts, a good dose of coffee, and some citrus hops...

T - Lots of roast, and coffee throughout. Citrus fruits don't make much of an appearance, but there is plenty of hop bitterness to be had in the finish...

M - On the higher end of medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation. Finishes dry...

O - Not great, but not bad either. If this wasn't so expensive, I could see myself purchasing this again; however, with the price at what it is, I will probably stay away...

Cheers...

1 pint 9 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard pressure cap served into De Molen stemware in low altitude Los Angeles, California. Reviewed live. Mikkeller is me favourite brewery; I'm very excited to try this. Paired with a breakfast burrito.

A: Pours a two finger tan colour head of lovely heavy cream lacing, amazing thickness, and brilliant retention, especially for the high ABV. Colour is a nontransparent solid black. Its very appealing.

Sm: Rich chocolate, moderate oats, light roast, and light coffee. A fairly strong aroma, and an extremely appealing one. I can't wait to try it.

T: Delicate rich wonderful chocolate tones, with light oats more towards the finish than the front. Hops enter at about the midpoint. Some light coffee in the third act is a nice touch. There's flavour everywhere, and it's nicely complex yet brilliantly balanced. A touch of caramel on the climax. Yet another beautifully built beer from Mikkeller. Bravo.

Mf: Smooth for the first half, coarse for the second. The same effect is present to a lesser extent for wetness and coarseness, respectively. The result is a mouthfeel that coaxes out the next sip. It's tailored very well to the flavours.

Dr: Very drinkable for the high ABV and for the style. The price is high but it's well worth it for the quality.

pour was a nice dark brown, nearly black in color with a nice head of off white, tan color on top that really just showed how nicely this one was put together. a wonderful aroma of thick coffee and crisp piney hops then came up and cleared the air, really making its presence known. huge aroma with warming bringing caramel and brown sugar to the front and smooth lightly bitter coffee balancing it out. nice smooth hop presence with a rich malty back bone that was beyond smooth. really just wonderfully done.

Poured from a bottle purchased at Beertopia in Omaha.

A: Pitch black with a tan head.

S: Dark roasted coffee beans, the slightest amount of citrus and pine.

T: Perfect. Starts off with a creamy, mild coffee flavor that transitions into the most incredible hop finish. Absolutely brilliant.

M: Coats the mouth...carbonation is just right. Medium body.

O: Probably my favorite beer that I have experienced so far. Everything about this was wonderful from start to finish and it is such a disappointment to see that beautiful tan residue on the glass where an outstanding beer once was. If you see this beer anywhere for any price BUY IT! You will not be let down!

Poured in to Founder's tulip glass.

A - Dark brown/black with one finger of thick, foamy espresso coloured head.

S - Bitter hops and roasted malts in a good overall balance. Some pine and citrus along with chocolate and toasted pine nuts.

T - Roasted malts, chocolate and a good bitterness. Some pine and citrus flavours come through form the hops as well along with some muted coffee notes.

M - Medium body, light carbonation.

Thanks to aapp for sending out this bottle. Served in a Mikasa tulip.

The is an American Black Ale.

Pours near black with a long-lasting deep tan head. Strong lacing and a heavy roast and chocolate character in the nose. Good dosing of pine and faint earth. Heavy pine, especially as it warms. Good balance between the pine and roast in the flavor. Medium body with a dry, resinous finish. Fairly bitter, mostly from the hops. Really quite tasty.

Bottle shared by Thorpe429. Thanks Mike.

The beer is dark brown, with a thin beige cap. The appearance bears an uncanny resemblance to the other Beer Geek stouts. Surprisingly good aroma, exceeding my expectations. Terrific blend of hops and dark roast. This taste much more like an American black ale (black IPA) than a stout. Really well balanced and full of flavor. A wonderful marriage of roast and hops. I highly recommend this beer.

appearance - black, beautiful mocha colored head that sticks around forever. lacing is also incredible.

smell - black ipa? wow lots of pine and herby hops. coffee comes in with some oats/barley. some charred wood

taste - pretty god damn hoppy. god damn hoppy. afterwards some coffee... not what i hoped for.

mouthfeel - weak body. great carbonation. oatmeal stouts need to be thicker than this and creamier. neither one is there whatsoever.

A - Pours nearly black with large three finger mocha chocolate colored head. A thing of beauty! Similar to a RIS pour.

S - Burnt chocolate, cocoa, coffee,

T - Initial taste of dark chocolate, espresso coffee and licorice followed by a bitter wave of grassy, piney hops! This is an IPA and American Stout all rolled into one. Finish is dry, begging you to come back for another sip.

M - Light to medium. Coats entire mouth.

O - My hats off to Mikkeller on this one. Stout/IPA rolled into one. The best of both worlds. Starts out like a creamy oatmeal stout and finishes with that bitter, dry IPA finish. Well done.

Pours a deep, dark brown with a 2-finger light beige head. Lots of layered lacing.

The smell is rather faint--some charred coffee malts with piney hops. Taste is bitter, strong coffee with just a hint of toasty caramel along with some herbal and piney malt flavors. Mouthfeel is smooth & medium to full-bodied with just the right amount of carbonation.

This is one of the more interesting stouts I've had. It has all of the better qualities of a stout with the exception of the overly bitter aftertaste, and adds to that a hoppy undertone. It may have an effect on the hops, but aging this might improve it some.

500mL Mikkeller bottle, poured into small glasses to toast being home after a nice weekend in NYC. I've been a fan of the other "Breakfast" stouts from Mikkeller, time for the hoppy one.

It pours dark brown-black, with a few fingers of tan foam that leaves a dark dry stain of lacing on the glass. It smells hoppy, pine needles mainly, with a strong roasted malt dominating throughout.

I like the interplay of hops and stout in the flavor, loads of roasted dark malts in the front and a decidedly citrusy hops flavor in the rear. No negative bitterness, and not really sweet either (making this much tastier than Darkness or Nightstalker). The carbonation is on the low side, which I like just fine. Very nice, a great addition to the line-up.

Appearance: Pours out pitch black and fairly viscous looking. About 3/4" of tan head forms, which has pretty decent retention and lacing. 4

Smell: Scents of charred malts and coffee are quite strong. Maybe the lightest hint of bitter baker's chocolate, and a ton of dank hops. This is seems like a pretty hopped up stout.

Taste: Strong flavors of charred chocolate malts and coffee, and a hint of baker's chocolate. This is followed by a healthy dose of hops. Takes a bit to get used to, but it gets smoother in flavor as it warms and I ended up liking it quite a bit.

Mouthfeel/Overall: Medium bodied with extremely fine carbonation. Very smooth drinking, comes close to creamy. Probably the best aspect of the beer. Overall, a good stout by Mikkeller. One of the better ones I've had.

from notes...

S - Big piney and herbal hop kick, roasty and lightly chocolatey
T - Very hoppy with piney and bright herbs, bitter chocolate and coffee, big bitter flavours that work well in unison
M - Starts stout smooth and gets a big bitter kick to finish
O - a fantastic incorporation of hops in a big heavy stout, well worth a try and maybe even a second purchase

Pours jet black with a chocolate brown head. In the aroma, a sweet roast and pine hops. In the taste, pine hops and a small sweet and roasty oatmeal. A hop bite and a medium to lighter bodied mothfeel, with a dryer small hop and small roast in the aftertaste. Big hops and small oatmeal and roast notes. It doesn't feel like a stout, but it is tasty!
