Total impulse buy while at whole foods. Didn't read the entire label and pleasantly surprised to pour this brew to unveil a dense black hue. I saw hops, but didn't think of the Beer Geek serious and ignored the possibility it could have been a hopped stout. YIPEE!

Wonderful aroma of smooth roasted malts, chocolate and savory malts. The combination almost has a mint brownie aroma, or the Girl Scout Thin-Mints. Exceptionally unique aroma.

Dry body. Not as viscous as I would imagine, but I don't recall other beers in this series to be on the thick side. Huge hop bite that carries through from start to finish. The finish has more of a bready, roasted flavor, but a sharp hop texture lingers after each sip is gone.

A lot of hop, some stout. This could almost pass for a black IPA. I'm still not a huge fan of Mikkeller's stouts, but I appreciate the Beer Geek Series thus far. For how hoppy this beer is, I imagined more body and more dark flavors. Especially with the rise of black ales and IPAs it's really important to distinguish between styles. This beer almost comes in a gray area between the two.

Poured from a bomber into my Deschutes tulip...

A - Pours a thick looking black color, with a very thick and foamy 2 finger light brown head. Very nice lacing as it fades.

S - Chocolatey and roasty with nice pine hop notes. A very interesting stout. Smells like a hopped up stout, very different...

T/M - The taste isn't as chocolatey as it smells. It definately has a nice oatmeal backbone, but not as thick as it looked when I poured it. Finishes with a crisp hop finish. Medium mouthfeel, light carbonation.

O - From the smell, I was expecting something more like a black IPA on steriods, but what I got was an average stout, with a descent hop finish.

On draft at the Publick House.

Big cocoa colored head, black body.

Fresh coffee aroma, chocolate, and dark malt balancing well with a piney resinous hop aroma.

Lots of coffee and a strong piney, grassy hop flavor. Malty with moderate sweetness and dark chocolate. Not that thick which makes this pretty easy to drink. Just the right amount of bitterness and doesn't clash with the roasty flavor of the beer making it astringent. It drinks like a black IPA. Highly recommended.

Some things you don't even know you want until you have them.

Poured into a Perfect Pint, the beer is black with a nice chocolate brown head. Smells like a regular Beer Geek Breakfast but with something sinister within.

Let the battle begin, the roasted malts wrestle with the piney, resinous hops for control over the tongue. Very interesting alternative to the style. Full-bodied and delicious, I didn't expect to want this beer again.

A: Pretty much pitch black with a big, dense dark brown head. Retention is incredible and so is the lacing. Took at least 5 minutes for the head to fade and it left a wall of lacing on the glass.

S: Whoa, pine overload. Lots of pine and resin. There is a nice roasted malt and coffee smell behind it as well. Touch of chocolate too.

T: Taste pretty much follows the nose. Incredible pine and resin up front and in the middle. Lots of bitterness. The roasted malt tries to wrest a hold of your palette with lots of nice char, coffee and a little chocolate. It all sort of fades together into the aftertaste.

M: Surprisingly a little watery, I'm not even sure why. Not as thick and creamy as I expected. Granted it IS "only" 7.5%, but most stouts are generally perceived heavier in my experience. Drying bitterness overload from the hops.

O: Wow, very interesting beer. The pine and resin is incredible, even mixed into a pretty strong stout. This level of hoppiness in an IPA would probably melt my teeth. It's not bad at all, in fact it's quite good. Just be prepared for the onslaught that you can't possibly expect.

A - Rich black/dark brown in color. Brown frothy head.

S - Lots of coffee. Big hop aroma. Piney and spicy.

T - Hoppy! Big bitterness at first. Kind of mellowed out as I took a few more sips. Coffee, spicy, smokey, and piney flavors accompanied the hops.

M - Slightly carbonated. Medium body.

O - Interesting beer. The name 'Beer Hop Breakfast' does not lie. Very hoppy. The GF thought it was too hoppy/bitter and she loves a hoppy IPA. The hop bitterness was balanced with a nice coffee/smokey/spicy malt backbone. This beer is definitely worth a try.

Poured into an impy nonic pitch black,no light showing thru this,a fluffy mocha colored crown atop that left broken chunks of lace behind as it setteled slowly into a frothy mass.Big hop resin mixed molasses sweetness just awesome,this is truly a hybrid of stout and ABA.Chocolate malts and tobacco flavors mixed with a healthy shot of pine resin on the palate,some molasses-like sweetness comes into play but doesn't intrued on the resiny hops.I have the hop burps wich makes me like this beer even more,a great example of the style,one of the best I have had.

Poured into a Chimay goblet. I've been aging this one for a little over a half year.

As I poured this I couldn't help but notice how viscous it was; it was like heavily used motor oil - dark and thick. The pour left a foamy tan head that quickly reduced to a thin layer and left chunky lacing on the sides of the glass. The smell is a beautiful blend of piny hops and roasted coffee with notes of chocolate. Very unique smell - couldn't wait to taste. From the first sip I got dark chocolate - extremely dark chocolate. Lots of intense bitterness with a little saltiness on the finish. After a little more, I really noticed how prevalent the hoppy character was, which continued to surprise me from a beer this dark. The warmer the beer became, the more sweet notes emerged and took the edge off of the hops. I loved the mouthfeel - very thick and smooth, with some decent carbonation. The character of the mouthfeel really added to experiencing the taste.

Overall, I really enjoyed this unique beer. There were a lot of elements present that I would expect from an oatmeal stout, but lots of hoppy IPA character as well, and it was all blended very smoothly together. Definitely will seek this one out again.

A- deep dark brown, medium brownish head, looks velvety, and delicious.

S- smells delicious, like deep dark pine, a little bit of chocolate aroma fights through but the aroma Is deffinatley dominated by hops. And heavily roasted coffee.

T- Piney hop notes and bitter coffe tones blend amazingly, a bit of chocolate, a lot like the aroma but the coffe is a bit more present.

M- medium mouthfeel, witha creamy texture, finishing dry and bitter!

O - an awesome beer from.one of my favorite brewers!!! Love the choice of hops used in this one.... I really love the way the favors intermingle.

P: 16.9 fl oz bottle in to a DFH tulip

A: SRM is dark brown/black. Opaque. Head is tan, 1 in, dissipates to line the top of the beer. Light/medium carbonation. Medium/heavy lacing.

S: Cascade hops waft off the nose, melding with big oat, dark roasted malt, and coffee notes. A brown sugar/caramel sweetness comes off as well.

T: Taste is akin to a black ipa with oat. Big hop notes hit initial palate. Secondary pallet sees the oats, dark roast malt, and mild coffee additions. Aftertaste is smooth hoppiness, oat, and dark roast malt. A touch of alcohol is noticable.

M: Full body. This is where you know this beer is a stout. Hop flavors expand the palate with the classic oat stout flavors and coffee coating the secondary palate and creating a viscous, malty/chewy feel. Finishes a tad dry.

O: If I close my eyes, I'm drinking a 3F Black Sun but with bigger oat stout flavor. This beer melds hop and oat/malt/coffee while still showcasing the hops up front and letting the classic oat stout shine through on the end. Mikkeller, imo, is either an out of the park dinger or a monumental bust for which I feel I have paid too much, usually the former rather than the latter. This one knocks it out of the park.

We pour a brew holding a dark, coffee-brown color. It nicely resembles a standard stout. The head stands one finger tall and is comprised of latte-colored bubbles. This shows decent retention and leaves sticky lacing as it departs. What is left is a ring of dark brown bubbles around the edges of the glass. It is too dark to assess sediment, and carbonation appears infinitesimal. The aroma sings of strong roasted coffee, and ever more roasted dark malts. There is a sweetness and chalkiness of raw chocolate, and a marshmallow sweetness. The hops are huge, and come in the form of pine cones. There is a cutting, more puckering citric hop component, and booze soaked cherries to help this along. Finally there is the smoke and char of a campfire to round things out and soften the edges. As we sip, the flavoring begins with charcoal malts and darker, more roasty grain. The coffee bean is also immediately apparent, and the hops remain airy to this point. They flourish through the middle, presenting at the peak as soap. This meets a flash of sugary sweetness, but the latter is quickly overwhelmed by darkness of grain, and coffee and hop bitterness. We finish on an insane bitterness of steely coffee and thick resiny hops. There is hollow lemon sweetness, and a final citric bite that leaves the mouth refreshed. The aftertaste breathes of general bitters of soap and resin, faint raw coffee, raw herbs, and earthy, dirty malts. The body is medium to full, and the carbonation is average. The beer is quite drying, with a steely coat of metallic left over the hard palate and tongue. The far back of the throat feels puckered. There is good slurp and crispness to each sip, making for a satisfying and easy drinking brew. The bitterness makes you take your time with this guy, and the abv is appropriate.

Overall, what we enjoyed most about this brew was the aroma and the taste. If you closed your eyes you may be tricked into thinking this is a straight IPA, but when you open your eyes up and dig deeper you discover a vast depth to the malt profile. The hops, too, are bright and bold, and mix nicely with the equally as stark grain bill. The smokiness puts this brew over the top, and helps make this a standup example of the style.

A - Jet black. Dark brown head the holds shape as much as whipped cream. you can literally eat it with a spoon.
S - Aromas include coffee, toffee, honey, hops hops hops, and cream.
T - Bitter hops forward, malt and cream finish. coffee and spice notes linger.
M - Less body then im used to with mikkeller strong stouts. Maybe from the heavy hopping?
O - Extremely enjoyable. For such a big beer it is very approachable and easy to drink. Booze is subtle, and bitterness is balanced. superb.
