Got this at The Cracked Kettle in Amsterdam.
From a 375ml bottle into a snifter.
APPEARANCE: Pours a big 3+ finger thicker looking off-white head with great retention. Auburn brown or rosewood read in color, which is a little darker than most in the style, with a bit of carbonation and a few floaties in there. Head fades slowly to a thick foam cap leaving some immediate lacing. A good film remains and leaves some nice lacing down the glass. A good looking uniquely colored double India.
SMELL: Pale and caramel malts in there, with touches of pineapple. Lots of floral hops and heaps of grapefruit aromas. Pretty big nose on this, and it's not nearly as one dimensional as I thought it would be. It even smells like it'll be bitter.
TASTE: If you like extreme beer, this is your bag. Obviously not 1000 IBU, as that's just the name of the beer, not the actual value. On the first sip, bitterness comes at you in waves. When you think it's all there, the next wave hits. There is some caramel malt sweetness and toffee notes up front, but this is all quickly swept aside in preparation for the assault. Floral hops and lots of bitter pine and grapefruit splash down through the middle and into the finish. The aftertaste is very bitter and full of piney and citrus hop notes. It's huge and lingers for eternity. I could still taste the last sip with the hop residue hours after it was done. Holly bitter shit. A bit of booze in there works well too. Massive, and very impressive.
PALATE: Medium body and carbonation. Creamy on the palate, goes down smooth and oily slick with a bit of a bite at the end. Finishes nicely mouth-coating. Great feel on this one.
OVERALL: I can understand why some people don't like extreme beer. This was just a whole lot of stuff thrown into a bottle, but at the same time, it is the extreme beer fan's wet dream. If you like big, bold, massive examples of extreme beer, this one will not disappoint. This was probably the most bitter beer I've ever had; the bitterness just wouldn't quit stomping me into the ground. What was even more impressive is that there were other nuances, aromas and flavors to complement the beer as well. A masterpiece of extremity. Another gem from Mikkeller.
