One of the newer bottles: no paper wrap, no cork, new label, green 375ml.

Pours a surprisingly dark and almost murky reddish brown. Beige head is huge and sticky. Good retention, decent lace.

Smells of extreme pine sap, resin, pineapple, grapefruit, earthiness, sweet toffee malt.

Taste brings resiny, grapefruit, earthy hops and a little more malt sweetness of the toffee and bready variety. The first few sips come off as astringent but that seems to fix itself with time. A bit of mint there as well.

Mouthfeel is big, almost syrupy, good dose of hop bitterness but also big malt sweetness. Almost comes off as a barleywine in a way. Alcohol heat is minor, but it's a sipper because of its robustness.

Those hoping for a game changing OMG level of hop bitterness will surely be let down, but a decent DIPA-leaning-towards-barleywine.

Drank this very late; expiry date was 22/03/13. (Beer had a cork, and was stored in darkness)

Poured dark and flat with lots of black liquorice and molasses on the nose. Very pungent. No sediment that I could see.

Front: very sweet, fruity (blackberries), and black liquorice.

Mid: a bit flat half-way through.

End: Big finish. Smoky and oaky, leather, caramel, sherry. (no bitterness since I'd aged it for so long)

Comments: the aging process definitely smoothed out the hops + bitterness. Very sweet.

330 ml bottle poured into a tulip glass. This sucker is rather dark, a cloudy flat-out brown (alright, brown amber) with a finger and a half of frothy large bubbles on top. Some yeast debris visible thanks to my shitty pour. Take a deep sniff or three and marvel at the pungent resins and bright tropical notes (strong pineapple mainly, offset a little by orange and grapefruit rind, underripe mangoes, and black pepper). Whoa. If you think the smell is potent, take a sip. This is pure bitter, like a pine bough dipped in Vicks Vapo-Rub rammed down your throat. Perhaps I exaggerate a little ... Just a little. My tongue is fairly numb after just seven sips, however, and the alcohol is warming my belly. I have reviewed 75 American IPAs and 38 DIPAs on this site to date, and this is the most powerful from a sheer resin perspective. As the bitter receptors crap out, the citrus and tropical fruit elements from the nose become more pronounced on the palate, a welcome reprieve. Very nice, deep tangerine and grapefruit peel flavor. Some lime too. This is one sick ticket. Am I enjoying myself? Well, yeah. Mostly. There's some darkish malts in here too, much like Mikkeller's single hop IPA series, almost a bit chocolatey. If you can get past the pine that is. Apparently the palate cannot truly detect 1000 IBU, which is just a calculation rather than a subjective taste reality that can actually be perceived. Could have fooled me though. I seriously think my eyes are burning. Interestingly, the aroma becomes more refined as one drinks, with a gorgeous floral perfume coming on strong and straight up pine sap and lemon oil settling down into a more pleasing spruce needle and dried peel tea. Body on the thick side to boot. Heavy canned peach and mango near the end. For me, this is probably right at my threshold of hoppy enjoyment and if there is something more rancorous out there and we cross paths, I might take a pass. Maybe.

It lives up to its name. The color was nice, it had some sediment which is expected with a lot of brews. Just don't plan on pairing this with food or a night with other great beers you want to try.
