Reviewed from notes on 12-31-11

P: 12.7 fl oz bottle into a snifter.

A: SRM is mustard yellow. Hazy. Head is off white, 1 in, dissipates to line the top of the beer. Medium carbonation. Medium lacing.

S: A hop explosion. While the palate may not be able to taste anything over 100 IBUs, the nose can certainly smell over 100 IBUs. Big piney and citrus hop notes, honey sweetness, and malt.

T: Huge hop flavor, but not overly bitter. Very well balanced. Honey sweetness and malt base are discernable. Aftertaste is piney and resinous hops with malt and honey.

M: Full body. Surprisingly smooth and balanced. Malt and honey add texture and a moderate creamy feel. Semi wet finish.

O: Very good. Nicely blended and balanced. Huge hops, but honey and malt serve as excellent counterpoints.

Pouring this beer into my snifter the aroma hit me instantly, deliciously resiny and floral. The taste followed suit with semi-sweet piney and floral notes. Appearance is very cloudy and inviting.

The only quarrel I have with this beer is the label of 1000 IBU's. Is this for real???
Overall I enjoy this beer very much (just not the price tag at almost $14.00 for 12.7 oz) It is definitely worth it to try just once.

Interestingly enough, a green bottle - except it's wrapped in opaque paper to prevent light penetration. Nice touch.

A: A very murky sort of amber/orange pour. Large off-white fluffy head. Retention is great. Lacing is decent.

S: I can smell it from the glass multiple feet away. Hop A-Bomb. Having said that, it's not the king of strong aromas. I think it's probably not 100% fresh. Fresh Hopsickle or Ruination or Devil Dancer is stronger.

Anyway, mostly pine resin with a strong grapefruit presence. Good pineapple too. Get some lemons too. Mango? Apricot? The whole family is here. Surprisingly strong caramel malt too - not that it's overpowering, it's just that I'm surprised I can smell it at all.

T: Wow, hop flavor is a lot stronger than the smell. It's pure oily, resinous hop juice. As mentioned above, lots of pineapple, mango, apricot and grapefruit. A bit of pine on the back end. Surprising sweetness bursts through and balances out very nicely. Hops are so strong, regardless, that it actually hurts my teeth. It's honestly delicious despite the strength.

M: Pretty heavy, quite drying.

O: I expected this to just be an unpalatable experiment in bitterness. But it's actually quite good! If you can get past the toothache it's a huge, juicy fruit bomb that is shockingly relatively balanced (if there were such a thing).

A much appreciated New Year's gift from Steamhead. Even after a night in which I punished my taste with a pint of Dogfish Head 120 run through a Randall, this proved to be a nicely hoppy beer, well balanced against some malt sweetness. A citrus character that had a nice brightness at the finish. ETOH was well integrated in the flavor. I'm not buying 1000 IBU's, but a nice beer, nonetheless.

No bottle date. Picked this up from a store that said they had just gotten it.... So possibly fresh. Pours a light brown color. Much darker than most DIPAs I've had. The smell is amazing. Piney, floral, and loaded full of bitter aroma. The taste is actually a bit too much; I can def tell why this is named 1000 Ibu. Over all this is a pretty good beer. The malt tends to even the brew out a bit more than what I feel most "American" IPAs have going for them. Good brew!
