750 mL bottle poured into an Allagash chalice. No bottle info. Bought this about a year ago, I think.

Appearance - Much darker than I thought it would be. Deep burnt orange. Mostly hazy. Giant head that lasts forever. Thick lacing and a pillow of foam.

Smell - The wine is apparent from a couple of feet away. Strong Brett presence. Really strong. A little it of a lemony aroma, maybe from the hops. Can't tell.

Taste - Acidic Brett notes without being really tart. Earthy flavors from the yeast. Same lemony flavor, but it has a dose of bitterness. Like a lemon pith flavor. Smooths out nicely in the back with a nice malt finish.

Mouthfeel - The finish really brings this beer together. The Brett flavors linger long enough to keep it interesting but without being harsh. Medium low carbonation, but it never feels heavy.

Overall - This grew on me as I drank it. At first it's a Brett bomb, but it really comes together as an excellent beer.

Bottle (2011)

Super Junior Market
San Diego, CA

Hazed dark amber with a huge, thick, light-khaki colored head that sticks around for what seems like forever, but surprisingly doesn't leave behind too much stick on the glass.

A very nice aroma of pears, apples, lemon, peaches, white grapes, some wood, and a hint of sourness. This is not entirely funky, but there's a mild barnyard hint present as well. This is a very (white) fruit-forward aroma.

The flavor isn't nearly as successful, especially as the beer warms. The flavors of pear and apple are dominant, with a mild sour component. As the beer warms, it seems to become less and less sour and take on more of a fruit juice character.

Thin to medium bodied with initially high carbonation, but it seems to lose it's body quite quickly.

An above average, interesting, sweet and fruity (mild) sour. This reminded me of one of Fantome's fruitier saisons.

"Aged three months in Austrian white wine casks". Add to that the New Zealand hops (Nelson Sauvin rich in white wine fruitiness)

Pours a medium shade of hazy amber with little clarity and massive foam if poured too aggressively. With my second glass, I took my time using the correct technique and still got a two fingered head before filling the glass. A couple of streams of bubbles are visible and add to the soapy white head. ZZ Top like leggs adorn the glassware making it kinda sexy, wow.

The nose is interesting and at first smells like a sour which I'm not too fond of. Fruity notes of orange peel, lemon, peaches, apricots and floral hops quickly shine through and bring a smile to my face. As it warms the funk tickles the nose and reveals the Belgian yeast.

The taste is full of fruit sweetness and yet balanced out with a perfect blend of hops and oak flavors. In the end green apple and white wine dominate the aftertaste.

The body is medium with a fairly crisp bubbly bite. Finishes with a dry tangy/tart mouthfeel similiar to a Granny Smith apple.

Overall a fine example of the style. I love the overall fruitiness and mild hop bitterness. Not to mention the well hidden 9% alcohol content. I'm happy to see this listed as a regular in the rotating line up and look forward to more in the future. Thumbs up!!

750ml black foiled, caged, and synthetic corked Burgundy wine bottle (once you remove it from the well-wrapped black paper covering). I like the label's lit cartoon bomb, ready to blow up the unspecified contents of New Zealand, Belgium, Denmark, and Austria, all integral to the contents of this offering.

This beer pours a cloudy, dark apricot amber hue, with some visible swirling sediment, and a teeming tower of tight rocky off-white head, which sinks away in no great hurry, eventually revealing a nice patchwork of honeycomb lace around the glass. More beer than champagne, at this junction.

It smells of funky, musty, tart, fruity, acrid hops. Same descriptors, but this time for the yeast. Phew. Lots of stuff wafting out of the glass, and it's all fairly well integrated - nothing dominates to the detriment of others. Beyond that, there's some further apple and pear notes, to go along with a so far unloved, but steady, pale bready malt. The taste is still rather funky, but evenly so, especially in light of the Marlborough white wine apery of the hops and the same in the particular German wine barrel treatment. Further tempering the deal are some nice independent citrus hop notes, and a still sturdy, soft, unassuming pale malt.

The bubbles, well that's where the weight should come down for this style, no? Here, we have a depleted, weak, flabby effervescence, so I'm calling shenanigans, but shall still fulfill the expectations of this piece - the body is a decent medium weight, a wee bit clammy, but otherwise agreeably smooth. It finishes just off-dry, the funk and identity-challenged bitterness doing well to parry any of the limited charms of the nondescript malt.

Well, not a bad beer from Mikkeller, as is the general trend, but this is no Brut, BA. A bang-up BSPA? Sure, why not? However, I'm quite glad that I didn't break out the stemware for this one - the standard pint glass or pick-your-Trappist branded chalice will do. This is just too brutal, in a good way, but not for the style, so drink it for that reason, and not the intended one. Me, I'll be sticking to the veritable French, grape-based stuff, when I get married next week. Glad I got this one out of the way first.

Bottle sampling at Bar Volo. A malt liquor with lots of fruitiness. Very Good drinkability for such high alcohol. Peachy coloured body with a little head and lace. A big bold taste, grape, apricot. full mouthfeel. Sour fruit aroma. A worthwhile big beer to try.
