Pours like some bubbly crude - pitch black and slippery. When jostled produces a half-finger tan head that dissipates at a moderate pace. Big nose. Obvious smoke, but less campfire and more industrial. Underneath you can smell some coffee, roasted malt, a touch of chocolate and a hint of black licorice. Drinks thick, but the high carbonation keeps it afloat. Interesting. Doesn't coddle you like other stouts but rather declares its presence with an almost stale, indifferent smokiness. Feels like an art studio replete with overflowing ashtrays. What's quite interesting is the hoppiness that is present early and constant throughout. It ends on a twisted tart note that's very clean. Unique, but not something I'd purchase twice. I will say, though, it's not lacking in character.

330 ml bottle. Pours black with a fluffy tan head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet perfumey grainy chocolate malts with some smokey BBQ and a little roast coffee.

The flavor is lots of bitter plastic like roast with a bit of smokey sweet BBQ and a little coffee. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery.

Overall, there's a lot going on (including some off notes). It doesn't mesh really well and the bitter roast is a bit overwhelming.

Thanks to my brother for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an inky black color with a large tan head.

The aroma is quite a bit of smoke, but I also get a lot of chocolate and roasted malt. I also get a little bit of coffee in the aroma, but it is hidden behind the other components.

The flavor is very similar and just as complex. The smoke is the dominant flavor, with the coffee and heavily roasted malts also being main components. I get a little bit of chocolate, but not hear as much as in the aroma.

Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice big stout that incorporates smoke very well.

On tap poured into a wine glass. Thanks to Shaun Hill for bringing this out!

Pours a very thick dark black with a small but thick and creamy and dark head. Nose is smokey and rich, quote bitter as well.

Taste isn't too bacon-y but it's certainly smokey and meaty. Very rich and roasty. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Overall a very interesting beer.

Black as can be with a thick, almost pillowy, brown head that eventually leaves lines and dots of lacing down the glass. Gorgeous.

This beer does not have a good aroma. It was poor at the beginning, and even worse after significant warming. The only thing I could use to describe it was words like "plastic bags" and "burning plastic." There's a strong smoke element as well, but nothing combines particularly well.

The flavor is just a tad more successful, but really not by much. There's some roast and a ton of smoke, along with still more plastic.

Medium bodied with ample carbonation.

A 500ml bottle with a BB of Oct 2013. Brewed in Oct 2010; batch 557. Purchased from a Belgian webshop some time back and stored in my garage. Hope it stands up to the other Beer Geek versions I've tried.

Poured repeatedly into a Duvel tulip. Ultra-black; a klieg light wouldn't penetrate its depths. Produces a vast head of creamy mocha-brown foam with excellent retention; this slowly subsides to a surface layer. Aroma of intensely dark, roasted malt with notes of coffee, smoke, burnt grain, a hint of molasses and yes, bacon. Perhaps an undertone of hops, but it's hard to tell. Impressive.

Tastes like a truck-load of roasted malt on a death ride; coffee and smoke are signed up as partners in crime. Notes of coffee, burnt grain, smoked malt, wood, stewed leaves and a hint of molasses. A subtle bacon-like character is discernible. A mild soy sauce flavour lurks in the background, adding a twinge of saltiness and umami. The alcohol is well hidden. A powerful, astringent bitterness upon swallowing - it's all about the coffee. Mouthfeel is smooth and thick, with tingly carbonation and a lovely, velvety body. Possesses a spicy, astringent quality that dries the palate. Aftertaste of bitter coffee and roasted malt, with a hint of smoke.

Bam! This brew assaults your palate like a batallion of smoke-infused coffee ninjas, insistantly demanding your attention. Crazy stuff: coffee, rauchmalt and roasted grain all laced with soy. It's fair to say that it lives up to its name; there is more than a hint of bacon in the aroma and a whiff in the flavour as well. Overall though, the coffee and smoked malt sit uneasily together and compete rather than complement. The result is inspired but imperfect - it lacks the incredible silky smoothness of Beer Geek Breakfast. However, it remains a unique and worthy brew - don't pass it up if you see it.

Pours black with a medium sized tan head. Strong smoke aroma with chocolate and roasted malts. Taste again is smokey with more chocolate and bitter coffee. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Very nice, this is one of the best smoked beers I've tried. Thanks wordemupg!

Dark brown pour, not as dark as expected. At the very end, the pour was clumpy, and rather than do the brussels lace thing, it looked as if (maybe it was the bacon playing tricks on my eyes) there were bits of congealed fat that caused it to stick to the glass in a very unique way.

Aroma was heavy smoke, char, almost thought this one was aged in bourbon based on the aroma.

Taste, so smooth and drinkable, the heaviest smoked beer I've had that did not impart an undesireable astringency, this one was spot on with the oatmeal. Chocolate, leathery feel to it downbottle. Bacon taste not really present, but could see it having been part of the smoking agent equation.

At $11 a bottle, I can't give it too high of an overall score, but it is an interesting beer worth checking out if you've never had it before. Not as good as the brunch weasel, but good.

On-tap at Leon's in Atlanta, the American version is sold as Rauch Beer Geek Breakfast.

Pours black with a one-finger brown head. The head recedes into a thin layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of smooth roasted malt, smoked malts, coffee, and dark chocolate, in that order. The smoked malt aromas intensify a bit as the beer warms.

Tastes very good. The smoked malt flavors aren't as intense as the nose intimates, instead favoring moderately roasted malt flavors that kick things off. Joining in shortly thereafter are good amounts of smooth dark chocolate flavors that segue into smooth, lightly roasted coffee. Hints of smokiness work their way into the flavor profile before fading out into a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a smooth thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is also very good. I finished my glass quickly and could easily have a few more.

Overall I was a fan of this beer and thought the smokiness was well done. It didn't overpower the beer and instead augmented what is already a nice beverage. Worth a shot.

Teku glass.

A: Pitch black with medium (2fingers), medium lasting, mocha head. Very good lacing.

S: Mild roasted malts aroma, low to medium smoked malts aroma (woody, ashy), coffee aroma, hints of vanilla aromas, some dark fruits esters.

T: definetely smoked beer - burnt and ashy, dark roasted espresso coffee flavours, some dark chocolate, medium bitterness, low hop flavor.

M: creamy texture, medium carbonation, medium to full body.

O: Very drinkable smoked beer, which base is great beer geek breakfast. This stout is very drinkable. Really good beer.

Poured from a bottle into my DFH snifter. Split with fellow BA infi.

Pours a deep, dark murky brown with a big tan head that quickly dissipates. Leaves a bit of loose, stringy lacing. Smell is full of that chocolate and coffee so typical of American imperial stouts. There's definitely that smoky quality advertised on bottle, mingled with some sweet vanilla and caramel malts. Really quite nice.

Roasted malts are there right off the bat, coating the tongue and palate. Some sweetness comes through with the caramel and lots of dark chocolate. Big coffee character shines through afterwards, with some toasted bitterness coupling with the smoky quality and oatmeal malt to create an interesting flavor profile. Just a tiny bit of astringency at the end. There isn't much of an aftertaste, which is slightly surprising. Booziness is only mildly detectable at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth, with a medium body and a light kind of chewiness. Not very much carbonation at all.

Drinkability is fairly good, with an appealing smell and an interesting flavor. Definitely a sipper as the flavors come alive as you let the brew warm up. Haven't had the regular Beer Geek Breakfast to compare, but this gets me quite interested. A great start to my Mikeller beer experience.

500ml bottle - not a lot of logos around with actual bacon imagery in them, so good on Mikkeller for the oddly literal display.

This beer pours a complete black, the only edges, even when back-lit, are in my imagination. The head is of the sort I've come to expect from this brewer - even with care and preparation, this fucker still overflows onto my kitchen counter. What it doesn't do, though, is outstay its over-ebullient welcome, dropping away in a steady manner, and rendering some evil low-pressure cloud system lace around the glass.

It all smells like a caramel chocolate bar that has spent too much time in a backyard smoker - fleshy, indistinct meaty aromas over top of big sweet malt. And bacon, specifically? Maybe, if it had spent a lot of time sizzling and then melding with the wood - but it didn't, apparently. The taste is a big improvement - smoky, ashy campfire, more wood than charred protein, caramel/toffee malt, medium chalky cocoa, muddled citrus pith, and bitter cold coffee.

The carbonation is average, with a slight zing up front, the body medium-full in weight, somewhat smooth amongst the clinging smokiness, and equally creamy from the underlying oats. It finishes with an emphasis on the sweet malty chocolate and coffee, slighted tinged by a dampened wet smokiness, and until-now hidden astringent booziness.

While it all starts out quite indicative of the titular breakfast morsel, everything thankfully levels off to a more agreeable smoky oatmeal maltiness, far more drinkable that one would have assumed from awkward first impressions. And not surprisingly, I have an urge to seek out some Islay single malt, something usually anathema to my Speyside-worshipping palate. Nicely played.

Review from notes:

A: Poured a deep black with a huge three finger mocha head with great retention and some very nice lacing.

S: Quite smokey with some roasted malt, burnt coffee, and bacon, which along with the smoke was the most evident aroma.

T: Had high hopes, but the flavor didn't work for me at all. It tasted like fake bacon, like bacon bits. There is also a rubber/plastic, bandaid like flavor.

M: Medium to full bodied, on the creamier side with a good level of carbonation.

O: Everything was pretty good on this beer except for the flavor profile, the most important feature. Certainly need to try this one again, since other palates I trust have enjoyed this beer.
