Very dark burgundy with a short mocha head and many flakes of yeast that give it an appearance that resembles fake vomit. Scent of maple, smoke, ash, oats and light coffeel. Taste of sweet maple, smoke, ash, oak and bitter coffee. (230 characters)

Strong charred wood flavor really comes through well in this one. It does sort of remind me of bacon. Lot's of great coffee and chocolate notes as well. Well done. (163 characters)

Poured into a snifter. Thanks, Alan.

A: A dark black with tan head that lingers. Not much lacing.

S: Lots of burnt espresso and bready malts.

T: Follows nose with a pleasing bite of robust, charred espresso beans. Malts mix in well for a tasty combo.

M: Medium to heavy with medium carbonation.

O: I still prefer the regular Beer Geek Breakfast, but this one was a tasty wake up call. Toasty goodness. (416 characters)

Pours dark black, topped with a good sized dark brown head. Good retention and lovely lacing.

Breakfast in a glass! Roasted barley, dark fruit, a touch of smoke and coffee. Most of the flavors are fairly subtle.

Smoke and char flatten the initial hit to the palate; dare I say, it comes across as dull. Coffee asserts in the second third, however, and the smoke brings much more flavor on the back third. Long finish with the smoke and roast dancing together.

Thick, almost chewy feel; smooth; lingering finish.

This is a pretty solid brew, certainly interesting, but not something I'm going to reach for again, especially at its price point. (646 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a snifter

A- pours a pitch black color with a small fizzy khaki colored head that reduces quickly leaving nothing behind

S- smoky woodsy campfire mixes with peat moss and dried & smoked pork aroma up front. Beyond that, layers of dark chocolate mix with fresh coffee grounds and subtle hints of caramel and oat

T- lots of deep, dark & bittersweet chocolate up front with notes of ground coffee mixing in. The smoke adds a second dimension, contributing flavors of smoked pork, charred wood, peat & campfire. The finish is dry with a linger of dark chocolate and smoke

M- medium body with medium-low carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that finishes dry and slightly chalky

O- the smoke plays more of a support role here, and it actually helps enhance the dark chocolate sweetness and the coffee, well done (841 characters)

L - Black in colour with a dark brown upper layer and brown foam.

S - I nice subtle aroma of a little smoke, Blackberries. can't pick up any coffee.

T - Slight sweet/sour taste up front, quite a bitter finish. Lots of smoke with coffee and possibly picking up bacon, may be the label playing tricks on my mind.

O- Not a bad little brew but the bitter taste isn't blending with the other flavours well (404 characters)

Dark brown, almost black color, with a small beige-brown head.

Aromas contain a lot of fresh crushed coffee beans, sweeter malts, bitter chocolate, cream and a decent amount of smoke.

Taste is defined by a solid bready malt foundation, which gets washed over by a creamy, smooth coffee bitterness. Malts then stay recognizable by turning a bit sweeter, giving the beer a fuller body. Medium carbonation is responsible for the coffee to rush down the throat rapidly, while leaving a trace of smoky, roasted bitterness on the palate. This beer is defined by an interesting interplay of very bitter coffee and smoked, toffeeish malts, finished by a long acrid finish.

Smoke actually doesn’t have the biggest influence on the palate, but it is recognizable in an enjoyable interaction with the malts, adding an unusal flavor to this great beer. Arguing from the perspective of loving a typical Bamberg smoked beer, this smoked stout entirely lacks the characteristic hints of saltiness. It is even more astonishing that it doesn’t need those, because of the complex coffee flavor, which stays in balance due to the malty smokiness - enough complexity is established in a different way, than they do it in Bamberg. The coffee flavor of this beer might already be enough to make this great, as it is very smooth, almost creamy, intense flavoured, and changes its taste on the palate during the tasting process. (1,414 characters)

Intensely smoked. Lots of wood, peat, pork and bacon flavor. Moderate roasted malt and coffee blends well with the smoky notes. Well balanced overall. One of the better smoked beers I've had. (195 characters)

A - pours essentially black with a dark rich chocolate colored imh head, decent retention great lacing

S - tns of smokey bacon, some bitter coffee. That's pretty much it

T - smokey as he'll, bitter bitter coffee and that's really about it. Bacon flavor doesn't taste great (274 characters)

I am still plowing through my backlog of bottles, but I may break down and hit some CANs in the next couple of days. In the meantime, here is a curiosity that I picked up at Hunger 'n' Thirst a while back.

From the bottle: "Smoked Oatmeal Stout Brewed With Coffee". Hokey smoke, Bullwinkle, this sounds really good!

The beauty of these really dark beers is that when I employ an aggro pour, the pseudo-cascade is extremely visible. I sat back in awe and watched it settle into two fingers of very dense, deep-tan/light-brown head with good retention. Color was an Opaque Black (SRM = 44) and it looked like the depths of outer space in my glass. Nose was very coffee-like with just a modicum of underlying smokiness. Mouthfeel was medium. While the coffee was still prevalent on the tongue, the smoke was beginning to assert itself in the mouth and in my sinus cavity. Warming, the smoke got stronger, but so did the coffee. I was really hoping for something much smokier, but since it is listed as an "Oatmeal Stout", rather than a "Rauchbier", I should not dun it too highly for this. Finish was still more prevalently coffee than smoky and I have to admit that I was disappointed. It was just too similar in taste to Beer Geek Breakfast and too lacking in smokiness to be worth the cost for a 330-ml. bottle. (1,314 characters)

My bottle had a label titled "Raunch Geek Breakfast", so it took me a while to find due to the alias.

a. Dark, Dark brown into black. Poured into a tulip glass - no head - some trace foam lying on top. Cannot be sure of the age of the beer - bottle had no markings. Reading other reviews of 2 finger dark foam heads makes me wonder if this was on the shelf a while.

s. I had coffee, smoke, and bacon - some acidic high note. More and more enjoyable as time went on.

t. The first sip was all smoke flavor - BIG smoke- coffee was layered in as time went on and the smoke was accepted in the pallet. Coffee lingers on the finish. Nice mix.

m. Very good. A bit heavy on the alcohol for a 7.5.

o. Very good beer. I am not a big smoked beer fan out side of Smoke and Dagger from Jack's Abby, which is a mild smoked flavor comparatively. (836 characters)

S: Smoke. Booze.

T: smoke. Coffee. Booze.

M: low carbonation. Thick. Smooth.

O: If you like smoked coffee, this beer is for you. Very smoky. Huge coffee notes. Wow. I am not a huge smoked beer fan, but this stands up to the style. (287 characters)

Pours a nearly opaque blackish color with medium brown head; thick rings down the glass. Smell: wood smoke, grain twang, earthy coffee with caramel and light fruitiness (plum ish). Taste: medium roast iced coffee, toffee, light earthiness, pine-ish note, grainy finish. Chocolate and dark fruit are reduced to being buried under the roast and grain. Worth a try, but my least favorite of the series so far. (406 characters)

Teku glass.

A: Pitch black with medium (2fingers), medium lasting, mocha head. Very good lacing.

S: Mild roasted malts aroma, low to medium smoked malts aroma (woody, ashy), coffee aroma, hints of vanilla aromas, some dark fruits esters.

T: definetely smoked beer - burnt and ashy, dark roasted espresso coffee flavours, some dark chocolate, medium bitterness, low hop flavor.

M: creamy texture, medium carbonation, medium to full body.

O: Very drinkable smoked beer, which base is great beer geek breakfast. This stout is very drinkable. Really good beer. (563 characters)

Pours a black color. 1/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Slight retention and slight lacing. Smells of hops, sweet malt, slight roasted malt, hint of alcohol, hint of smoke, and hint of floral notes. This is more the style of Smoked beer than an oatmeal stout, though it doesn't fit easily into either category. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable dryness. Tastes of sweet malt, roasted malt, hint of smoke, slight hops, and slight alcohol. Overall, good body, blend, and aroma, but the smoke is almost an afterthought. (575 characters)

Poured from the bottle into a snifter glass.

A real nice thick brown walnut body out of the bottle, but fills the glass with very dark black colors. Head is creamy thick and cocoa brown, thick coating of ring lacing all around and thin creamy colllar to match. Real nice lovely looking stout.

Great aroma and as advertised. Subtle campfire smoke, nice wood like embers. Subtle coffee and char roasting aromas. Certainly some cobbed smokey hints of bacon to match.

Palate is large amd wonderfuly controlled smoke. Hints of earth hop and large smoked malt without plastic burnt character. Coffee angle is a little lost as smoked and rauch accents dominate. Nice carbon char with smoke that hints slightly toward tobacco and balances nicely. Some milk coffee comes out as the beer warms up and the smoke subsides a bit with a lingering presence. Missing a bit of chewy and creamy oat character.

Truly a beer described and tastes as labelled. Missing only a bit of creamy palate feel to match. Otherwise a blast to drink. (1,021 characters)

Poured into a Reuben's Brew snifter. Pours pitch black with a thin brown head with good retention and light lacing. Aroma of sweet dark toasted malt, very light coffee with light chocolate and smokiness. Flavor of smoked, toasted dark malt, brewed coffee, light campfire smoke that has some peaty mineral character. Finishes with light grassy hops and boiled down coffee with a light residual smokiness. Medium bodied. An interesting coffee stout with a somewhat lighter malt and body than expected from an oatmeal stout. The malt complement does not quite support the smoke and coffee flavors, although they are not that intense. I enjoyed this, but was left wishing for a more intense malty stout body to play off the additional flavors. A well made coffee stout that doesn't really stand out from the pack. (809 characters)

Very dark brown color, almost black with tan head. It's clear even if it's not so transparent.
At the nose there is a lot of coffee and chocolate, but also some molasses, an hint of bacon and a little of brackish. It's very particular.
Full bodied, very smooth in the beginning but with a good bitterness that brings balance to the beer. Long lasting taste. Very good beer.

Bottle from Tipples, labeled as Rauch Geek. Pours pitch black with a massive dark brown head that goes on forever. Aroma is lots of smokey wood, candied bacon, chocolate, lots of earthy coffee, glorious. Flavor is chocolate and coffee up front with a nice bitter-sweet balance. earthy coffee really comes out as my palate gets used to the smoke. A rich oatmeal sweetness, lots of roasty malts, then a big punch of smoke that lingers on the palate until forever. Just a flavor explosion of all kinds, but the smokiness complements the other flavors beautifully. Relatively rich mouthfeel with low medium carbonation, but plenty drinkable. Probably my favorite of the Beer Geeks I have tried. (690 characters)

330 mL bottle poured into a tulip

A- Black with a two finger tan head.

S- Roasted coffee, smoky bacon, some chocolate, faint piney hops.

T- Camp fire like smokiness, piney hops in the finish, hints of citrus hops, some roasted coffee notes. Smoke is front and center in this beer.

M- Medium body, finish is a little to hoppy bitter making the finish a little rough.

O- Not a bad beer, but my least favor of the series. (423 characters)

Bottle I brought to share at dabaloons' tasting.

This is now labeled as Rauch Geek Breakfast.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, smoked malt, toasted oat, cocoa, and citrus zest aromas. Taste is much the same with smoke, cocoa, and citrus zest flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and dry mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a smoke presence that is more apparent in the aroma. (674 characters)

330 ml bottle. Pours black with a fluffy tan head that retains well and laces the glass some.

The aroma is sweet perfumey grainy chocolate malts with some smokey BBQ and a little roast coffee.

The flavor is lots of bitter plastic like roast with a bit of smokey sweet BBQ and a little coffee. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly watery.

Overall, there's a lot going on (including some off notes). It doesn't mesh really well and the bitter roast is a bit overwhelming. (479 characters)

The beer comes in a very dark brown.

The aroma has a strong smokey aroma of bacon, a bit of camp fire, quite peaty at times, and then some coffee and chocolate in there.

The flavor follows with that smokey peat character, a bit of light bacon smokiness, then tons of roasted coffee. For those into smoked beers, this has a wonderful balance between the smoke and coffee flavors. A medium body on this.

This beer holds it own by being packed with flavors at 7.5% ABV. A wonderfully delicious take on the series. (514 characters)

Near pitch-black body with a one-finger thick, light tan head. Chocolate malt aromas infused with a subtle smokiness. Big roasted malt flavors with strong tones of smoked wood; grilled brats; acidic; some alcohol warmth; barest hint of hop bitterness. Heavy bodied; semi-dry finish.

Well, now. All I can say is that this is a pretty damn fine smoked beer. Rich and dark with a hefty malt backbone and a nice, thoroughly integrated smokiness throughout. I don't know how long this particular brew may be available, but, being a big fan of smoked beers, I'll definitely pick up another couple of bottles at Coaltrain Wine and Spirits in Colorado Springs to supplement my stash of Aecht Schlenkerla smoked beers. This one may not quite reach the heights of the Bavarian standard, but it's not too far off the mark. (812 characters)

330mL bottle into tulip. no bottled on date.

A: pours a very, very, very dark brown. looks thick. head is pretty dark too. tight bubbles. good retention and thick lacing left behind.

S: minor hints of smoke on an otherwise very rich coffee and dark chocolate filled body. smells slightly acrid. a little bit of Band-Aid. reminds me more of peat than smoke at times.

T: tons of coffee flavor. really tastes more like a cup of freshly roasted coffee than beer. the smoke is certainly acrid, but not as intense as I would imagine for a beer called "rauch geek".

M: smooth carb on a medium/full body.

D: good not great. like all of Mikkeller's beers, way over-priced. looking back I probably would have passed as I was hoping for much more of a smokey brew. (760 characters)
