Poured from a 16.9oz. "half-liter" bottle into a wine goblet.
Inky-black in color with purple highlights, and a big, thick, tan head of foam.
Aroma-Coffee, subtle chocolate note
Taste-Big blast of black coffee, baker's chocolate, subtle woodsmoke backbone, charred steak. Very dry, black coffee finish.
Complex and full of character, a "coffee and cigarettes" eye opener for the tastebuds.

i'm going to preface this review with my opinion that this beer tastes like how an ashtray smells and i enjoy it.

poured into a mini-tulip, black with a tan head. moderate lacing. looks good.

smells like an ashtray, smoke, ham, roasted barley, burnt toast, burning in general.

tastes...kind of like an ashtray. some roasted flavor up front, some smokey astringency (maybe from the high percentage of oats as well) hints of coffee, bitter chocolate and smoke as well in the finish. doesn't remind me of bacon much.

mouthfeel is very rich and coating. i like this beer, but the nature of the style doesn't make this the most drinkable style. it's good for a bottle, but this isn't something i'd throw back glass after glass. the smokiness just kinda wears on my taste buds after awhile.

Fantastic looks. Deep black with a tall, thick cloudy mocha head with thick chunky lacing and long retention.

Bittering hops , chocolate malts, fudge, roasted charcoal, peat smoke, dark fruit esters, with hints of tobacco and earth.

This is a monster. Thick, tannic as all hell, long long finish, bakers chocolate, very bitter, black fruits in the middle, light on the palate with a delicate creaminess. If not so bitter would score a bit higher otherwise another fantastic stout in this series. Earthy, peaty, and tobacco laden. Nice.

500ml into snifter: from notes.
A: This beer pours a two finger head, that is a deep tan and holds very well. The body is a thick oatmeal black body. The lacing is left in a layered fashion.
S: The bold aromas of espresso and notes of chocolate. These elements are equal in power and there is an underlining smoky aroma.
T/M: The espresso shows a powerful blast on the front, while oatmeal thickness is throughout. The nice balance of flavors is well played for this interesting style choice. I am finding a smoky flavor on the finish. I sense more of a coffee brew, than a smoked brew, but no doubt there is a layer of smoked bacon in this nicely complex brew. Taste like bacon cooking with a fresh pot of coffee and a bowl of cooling oatmeal in front of you.
D: This brew is very likable, there is a nice character to it and it could appeal to many different people. Not overly smoky and very nice balance of all flavors.

Poured into a Duvel tulip.

Typical dark, black color with a light-tan head of tight bubbles. Decent head retention and some sheets of lacing on the side. The most predominant aroma was the barley/malt with some streamline hints of smokiness, dark chocolate sweetness and black coffee. Not as much smoke as a rauchbier, but still a little lacking in my opinion. As the stout warms, the ABV really opens up and becomes the standout aroma.

Taste was really dark-roasted coffee-oriented with a thin malt backbone with some overall sweetness. Towards the end was a big bittersweet chocolate and burnt coffee astringency that was topped off with bacon saltiness. Not much of a bacon or smokey flavor in the taste overall. Not sure if how I'd feel towards a bacon-infused stout, but this certainly wasn't one.

Mouthfeel was just about medium-bodied, but I thought it'd was considerably lighter. Not much carbonation and the beer thinly coats the mouth. Drinkability was moderate, probably because of the subtleties of the flavors and lacking of complexity. Took us around 3 hours to finish the bottle between us two.

After comparing this to my year-old review of BGB, it appears as if both the bacon version and the regular are really similar in all aspects, aside from the smoked malt character. Very fortunate to have been able to try both types and I'd say that these Beer Geek beers are more than worth of your trying!

Poured from a bottle into my DFH snifter. Split with fellow BA infi.

Pours a deep, dark murky brown with a big tan head that quickly dissipates. Leaves a bit of loose, stringy lacing. Smell is full of that chocolate and coffee so typical of American imperial stouts. There's definitely that smoky quality advertised on bottle, mingled with some sweet vanilla and caramel malts. Really quite nice.

Roasted malts are there right off the bat, coating the tongue and palate. Some sweetness comes through with the caramel and lots of dark chocolate. Big coffee character shines through afterwards, with some toasted bitterness coupling with the smoky quality and oatmeal malt to create an interesting flavor profile. Just a tiny bit of astringency at the end. There isn't much of an aftertaste, which is slightly surprising. Booziness is only mildly detectable at the end. Mouthfeel is smooth, with a medium body and a light kind of chewiness. Not very much carbonation at all.

Drinkability is fairly good, with an appealing smell and an interesting flavor. Definitely a sipper as the flavors come alive as you let the brew warm up. Haven't had the regular Beer Geek Breakfast to compare, but this gets me quite interested. A great start to my Mikeller beer experience.

A- Poured motor oil black with 3/4" caramel head. Head dissipated to a thin film and provided nice lacing.

S- Smoked meat and burnt wood chips upfront. Followed by heavy roasted malt, light coffee and a little bit of dark fruit.

T- More of the smell. Dark fruit doesn't come through at all. Roasted malt dominates, with a pleasing moderate smoke flavor.

M- Medium body, light carbonation. Given the flavors, I would almost prefer a heavier mouthfeel.

D- Not the most extreme smoked beer I've had, but very enjoyable- would pair well with a very sharp cheddar, or a steak. As far as the other beer geek line-up goes, I enjoyed this more than the breakfast, but far less than the weasel.

Poured from 500ml into an Old Raspy pint glass...

A - Pours black with a three finger dark brown head. Lots of lacing sticks to the glass. Nice...

S - Chocolate, coffee, and lots of smokiness come through. Also pick up hints of a sweeter fruit scent (Apricot or maybe peach). Either way, i'm a bit surprised...

T - Dark roasted malts, chocolate, and bacon. Bacon adds a saltiness to the taste. Very smokey...

M - Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation...

D - Glad I tried this, as the bacon adds an interesting touch. Something I would definitely recommend to somebody who has not tried it before, but I think I prefer the Beer Geek Brunch over this one. Overall, a little smokey for my tastes, but still a pretty solid brew...

On tap at Deep Ellum in Allston.
Rich, opaque black but not viscous, crema-colored head with fin bubbles and some lacing.
Smoky, maillard, a bit sour. Not a complex as advertised.
Smoke, not as powerful as some, but more than just roasted malt. Bacon meatiness, not savory but coffee bitterness is apparent.
Lighter-bodied for the color and style, light head/fairly crisp carbonation.
Not as challenging a beer as it would seem, a more intense stout without the sweetness or syrupy qualities that plague imperials (those that border barleywines). Tasty, meaty, more roasted than smoky.

My bottle read, Rauch Geek Breakfast. Poured into a nonic.

Dark, dark, dark with a mocha head with great cohesion. It starts off about 1/2" and reduces to 1/4" and stays there for a while, but leaves no lacing. Other reviews say it does so perhaps my glass affected the lace, maybe not.

Smells like BACON! Only one things smells like bacon and that's BACON! Well, and this beer. Many smoked beers smell like Liquid Smoke or a burnt-down house or a campfire, but this one smells like...say it with me...BACON! Yeah I overdid that a bit. You can also make out the OATMEAL! Sorry, when you have high cholesterol you get excited over oatmeal. The smell is also sweet, not as "sweeeet, it smells like bacon" or "well, isn't she sweet" but in the "sugar is sweet" usage of that word. All those smells and yet it works. Awesome!

If you don't like rauschbiers than you won't like this one. Strongly bitter coffee and moderately smoky bitterness, it does not taste like bacon...I am so sad right now. But once you get over the fact that this is not liquid bacon you realize that it's a well-crafted smoked stout. The flavors are balanced, the smoke doesn't overpower everything else, the oatmeal adds a velvety mouthfeel and the bitterness ends puts a definitive end to the experience without dragging it out.

Had this at Deep Ellum in Boston. Served in a tulip and was so good I had two. I wish I could compare it to the infamous Kate the Great by Portsmouth Brewery, but as of yet, I have not had her... Thus this is my gold standard. It was full of flavor; layers of coffee, dark malt, appropriately bitter.

500ml bottle into a tulip. 

One of the few perfect looking stouts I've ever seen!  What a great start to a beer drinking experience.  When I pour the Beer Geek Bacon into my tulip, I'm amazed by the way the pitch black beer is blanketed by a three finger milk-chocolate colored head.  Immaculate.  Amazing lace and retention.  This is a true beauty of a brew.    

The smell continues the session with almost equally impressive results.  I get strong scents of dark chocolate and a touch of hops. Before trying as many smoked beers as I've been fortunate enough to have encountered, I may have thought this had a very strong smoked presence.  However, it's actually right in the middle compared to others and is very well integrated and pleasant.  The beer's aroma is really reminiscent of cured bacon and I can easily see where the name comes from.  A touch of campfire, some coffee, and (maybe I'm imagining things) maple syrup round the nose out.

The only thing that could bring this beer down (and me) at this point would be some abnormality or unbalance in the taste. Thankfully, that doesn't happen. Instead, I'm experiencing great chocolate notes from the malt, and a balanced amount of smoked malt with just enough campfire and a hint of salt.  This really does taste like bacon and coffee, magnificent.  Whatever the ratio was, this is the perfect balance of roasted and smoked malt and I'm very impressed.     

The mouthfeel is creamy, with both the body and carb working together wonderfully.  It is just a hair under perfection due to just a touch of watery character in finish. However, for a smoked beer, that probably helps to make it not just tolerable but very drinkable. Think of it this way - Mikkeller probably lost a 1/2 point in mouthfeel and gained it in drinkability.  A fine tradeoff if you ask me. This is simply a great beer!  Probably the best smoked stout I've ever had!!!  Seek it out, it is worth the price!

Grabbed a bottle of this at State Line.

Pours near black with a thing off white to tan head. Smell really brings out both the coffee and the smoke, which turns out to be a really lovely interaction. Taste is about the same, with a great competitive dynamic between the two. Nice amount of roasted malt in the background. Medium body with good carbonation; quite smooth. Drinks incredible well, especially for a smoked beer. Normally, 4oz. or so of something like that is already getting to be a bit much for me.

Pours a very thick dark black with a small but thick and creamy and dark head. Nose is smokey and rich, quote bitter as well.

Taste isn't too bacon-y but it's certainly smokey and meaty. Very rich and roasty. Mouthfeel is thick and creamy. Overall a very interesting beer.

A: Beautiful brown head, dark body the color of molasses. Very inviting!

A: Roasted malt, smokey, coffee and dark chocolate.

T: Roasted coffee, liquid smoke, slightly nutty with a chocolate finish.

M: Medium bodied with low carbonation. Has a comfortable richness one looks for in an imperial stout.

D: Overall, this is extremely pleasing. Best consumed slowly to allow flavors to develop as the liquid warms. Availability and price keep me from consuming more.

A: Pours black with a dense cappuccino colored head that faded into a thin film that left a million little spots of lace.
S: Big smoky notes that smelled like the burnt outside of a BBQ'd piece of meat hit you right after the pour, but a touch of sweetness and coffee comes through as the beer sits. Yeah the smoke really fades as the beer sits and a lot more earthy oatmeal notes come out.
T: The smoke doesn't dominate the flavor at all like I was expecting. This tastes very similar to the normal Beer Geek Breakfast, which is expected since that's really all it is. Smoke reminiscent to that of a campfire adds a touch of flavor to the finish of the beer and dominates the aftertaste. Coffee is lightly present as well and dark chocolate.
M: The texture of this beer is almost that of nitrogen. It's so very creamy and smooth, especially at just under room temperature when I poured it. Carbonation is damn near perfect and body is light yet chewy enough to give this a very soft and creamy mouthfeel. Alcohol is masked completely.
D: Not incredibly different than BGB, but I think I would prefer this one to the normal version. The smoke balances the sweetness from the malt and gives it an interesting flavor, yet it is never overpowering. Mouthfeel is better than BGB as well. Buy it and try it.

Pours up absolutely black with a tightly knit, light brown, toffee coloured head. Thick, creamy lacing coats the glass as I tilt my pint. This is a wonderful looking stout!
Big coffee smell with a little bit of smoke in the back. Nothing like what I was hoping for. Still a lovely smelling stout.

<sigh> American style hops strike [in the wrong style] again. Terrific dark malts and a great coffee "punch", but those big, citrusy hops show up and wreck the whole thing. Clearly many people enjoy this, but I am certainly not one of them. This beer had quite a lot going for it until the hops showed up. Still a *good* stout, just disappointing when I had myself so built up over it. Oh well...

Mouthfeel is very smooth and creamy in the mouth, bordering on feeling oily; perfect for the style, imo.

While terribly disconcerted over their hop choice for this otherwise terrific stout, everything else was well done. Still a fine brew.

8 oz tap pour in a snifter at The Palm Tavern.

A - Served totally black in the snifter with firm dense dark tan head. Good retention but no lace left over.

S - Beer Geek Bacon sizzles with roasted malts and hints of cocoa and chocolate with an overpowering peet smoke aroma.

T - Bitter chocolate starts the flavor with a dusty cocoa backing and a mild peet smoke that comes through with a touch of coffee on the finish.

M - Medium-bodied and smooth with a toasty, smokey finish and an acrid, dry bitterness.

D - Wow. It's a good thing this snifter was shared. That's a pretty smokey rauchbier. A little over-the-top with the smoke, it could easily be brought down a notch or two.

The beer pours an inky black color with a large tan head.

The aroma is quite a bit of smoke, but I also get a lot of chocolate and roasted malt. I also get a little bit of coffee in the aroma, but it is hidden behind the other components.

The flavor is very similar and just as complex. The smoke is the dominant flavor, with the coffee and heavily roasted malts also being main components. I get a little bit of chocolate, but not hear as much as in the aroma.

Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. A very nice big stout that incorporates smoke very well.

Big ups to my boy VDubb86 for pickin' this one up before I got back, allowing us to enjoy it this evening.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Beer Geek Breakfast, as well as the Brunch Weasel, so expectations are high for this one. It pours a lovely onyx topped by over a finger of decently dark and rich brown foam. The nose comprises molasses, chocolate syrup, smoked ham hock, charcoal, and a twinge of maple syrup somewhere in there Waldo-style. The taste is very similar, with the charred and smoky flavors accentuated further and some cocoa powder sprinkled all over the proceedings. This stuff is damn tasty, son! The body is fairly hefty, with a relatively light carbonation, which is masked by the thick, chewy feel. Overall, my high expectations were definitely met. Good work, Mikkel!

It pours an obsidian black with a rich coarse brown finger of foam to adorn the surface. The aroma is of chocolate and smoked malts. In addition there is the smell of char and I might just be imagining this but the alcohol flavor which is well hidden comes through as oranges. The taste is very much the same. There is smoked malts and cocoa powder with an addition of coffee to add some mild bittering. The hints of orange are also detected as if to complete the breakfast flavor. The taste is not as smokey as I would like, and it should be rated higher in taste were it not for the fact that I don't taste the bacon. The mouthfeel is exquisite. This is one of the smoothest stouts I've ever had, and as an imperial, that's saying something. This does have a higher ABV so it's not sessionable, but I had no problem sipping this all day due to the smoothness. Overall a damn fine beer and a high recommendation from myself.

.3L serving size - $7.00 at the Brick Store Pub in Decatur, Georgia.

Appearance: Displays a heavy-looking black body on the underside of a two inch-high layer of dark tan foam.

Smell: Luscious nose suggestive of either Kahlua or Godiva liqueurs, with round notes of chocolate, chocolate, vanilla, and licorice. Sure, the smoke is registering, but, come on, where's the smoked lardons, where's the smoked salmon? I was told there'd be lardons!

Taste: Brings to mind one of the Godiva chocolate liqueurs, with it's tones of bittersweet chocolate, vanilla, and sweetened coffee. Slight drift of smoke character throughout, though still not the flood of bacon-like meatiness I'd seen mentioned or had hoped for. Hints of powdered licorice root and dark fruits. Touch of underlying bitterness. More of that liqueur character for the long, chewy finish.

Mouthfeel: Full-bodied. Medium carbonation. Very soft and velvety on the tongue, like the texture of melted chocolate ice cream.

Drinkability: Personally, I'd hoped for more smoke as it warmed, but no dice. Still, a tasty treat to sit with down at the pub.

A: Black as coal one finger of mocha hued head, solid retention, light lace ring remains

S: Smoked malt and wood are the first things I pick up. Light coffee and a hint of chocolate can be found if you try real hard but the smoke sort of drowns them out.

T: The flavor is a tug of war between full on smoke and bitter coffee. It's like pouring a cup of black coffee on my tongue over a campfire. I get no bacon at all. Fairly one note for my tastes.

M: full rich body, very low if any carbonation

D: I can totally see what they were shooting for but for my money it's missed the mark. I had trouble choking down the last few sips of this one.

Doesn't a smoked breakfast stout sound good? It did to me. On to the beer:

Lookin good. It's pitch black with tan colored foam. The head forms thick with solid retention and leaves several healthy rings of lacing sticking to the glass. The nose is coffeeish, also imparting a light bacon aroma, which fits the theme. As far as overall intensity, the overall nose is less intense as its other two siblings.

The first few ounces are fine. There's a presence of mocha and a squirt of hops. Also present is a subtle note of cured meats. But for the price of the cured meats are a major component of cigarette ash. (I know this because I once mistaken a beer bottle at a get together that was being used as an ashtray, if you will, and put that bottle to my lips instead of the one I was drinking from!) The other criticsm is the mocha flavor numbing. It's still decent tasting, but far from a world class beer. The ash aftertaste doesn't help a whole lot. If there's one thing to be proud of, it's the thickish mouthfeel reminiscent of a milkshake.

I love the idea of a smoked oatmeal stout. However, I don't enjoy the smoked flavor so overdone that it's basically ash. It's decent overall and doesn't force you to choke it down; I simply expected a better beer from Mikkeller.

The nose was not as smokey as I anticipated but I did spot out roastiness, chocolate flavors I believe were from the malts and I also sniffed out slight underlying hop notes. Like I suspected there was slight hop bitter character on the palate with a mild smokey roastiness, chocolate malts, and burnt grain notes. The brew was medium to full in body with a good amount of carbonation which had a very slight sweet, but smokey, roasty, and hop bitter finish. It drank pretty good but to me is not one of my favorites beers from mikkeller. Out of all the breakfast beer I'd go with the brunch weasel.
