Had this as my nightcap after a nice steak. Dessert of Gorgonzola dolce, speck, walnuts and apples. oh yes.

A: Dark, black/brown. A one finger head that disappeared into the oily blackness of this beer.
S: Smoke, bacony, liquorice, sweet malt, burnt red meat.
T: Very complex, smokey, bitter, and lovley.
M: A battle between viscous and dry, odd, but interesting.

O: Overall, it took me the whole bottle and a bunch of input from tasting friends to really try to understand what this beer is. We are still trying to... Maybe a little more age on it and it might gain a bit more harmony. Still this beer is goin places!

Just from the image on the bottle of rising smoke I know this beer is going to portray just that.
Pours oily black with an immense frothy mocha head that fades back down ever so slowly leaving little lacing that follows the head - small head retains itself atop the beer keeping it looking nice. Instant smell of sour smoke and charred meat - deep dark chocolaty malts present. Taste is campfire smoke (if it could be bottled and consumed) and it truly does remind the tastebuds a bit of bacon in a funky way - also flavors of bitter chocolate (mostly in aftertaste, also a spice to it). The feel is smooth, but not thick, just creamy. It leaves a bitter, and dare I say, sour bite on the back of the tongue. This beer developed further as it warmed up but I'm still getting used to the smoked beers so hopefully I can revisit this in the future and enjoy more than I did.

Cheers

A- Healthy pour yields half and half beer/foam. Head is a very dark tan color, beer itself is black. Wow, really good head retention and lacing!

S- Mild but noticeable smokiness.

T- Oatmeal stout turns to straight smoke. Bacony. Yum. Slight coffee. OMG mouth watering.

M- Nice and creamy. Medium to medium-low carbonation.

D/O- Extreme beer here, I'd like to think anyone who buys this knows what they are getting into and therefore enjoys what they taste. Bacon smoke in a higher ABV oatmeal stout defines it perfectly. Will have this at least a few more times before its all said and done.

Pours jet black with a dark brown head. In the aroma, sweet oatmeal, roasty, and campfire like. In the taste, a nice sweetness of oatmeal, and a nice roast, with a smokey flavor sneaking up halfway through and hanging in there till the end. A small bite and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry smokiness in the aftertaste. Nice roast and small smoke, not too much smoke either, very well done.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. It pours black and is opaque when held to the light. 1/2 inch mocha colored head forms reducing to a nice over-the-top lacing. Some sludge is present at the bottom.

The aroma has a quick oatmeal and dark chocolate component which is then matched with a smoke and dark fruitiness.

The taste seems to have more upfront smoke with a semi-sweet chocolate overall taste. A bit of oatmeal and a light hopping is also present. an oak and smoke taste remains at the finish.

The mouthfeel is medium-full bodied with a chalky finish. Lightly carbonated and a mildly lingering dryness. Quite smooth with a unique smoky bite.

Overall, this is a very good beer. I think it could be tricky to have more than one due to the intensity, which is also what makes it great. It is good enough that I would definitely have another, with that being said. Very nice beer.

from notes...
A - Syrupy black, tall mocha head lasted very long
S - Super smoky and peaty although somewhat of a burnt twinge, coffee accents, roasty
T - Strong wood smoke, espresso, leafy hops, roastiness, smoke lingers
M - Smooth chewy, full finish with slight dryiness
O - Berr and bacon together, how can you resist? Interesting concept, more smoky than bacony, worth a try but not another purchase

Oil black body with a pinky-brown head that porous and billowing. Smoked meat, coffee, leather and dark chocolate in the scent. Faint hints of brandy and wine.

Woody, smoky taste. Meat, black coffee and even a really light tobacco in the flavour. No hops, very light alcohol.

Thick, chewy body. Not overwhelmingly slick - the carbonation is just right. This is a nice beer with a hearty meal, or even as a dessert.

Reviewed a while ago...from notes:

A: Nice black body with a tan pinky of head and some nice clingy lacing.

S: Very nice smoked meat and charred malt smell with chocolate and barley.

T: Wicked peat and charcoal malt. Like a dead wood fire in a glass, maybe a little overboard. Some of the meat comes through but really its all smoke and malt here.

M: Way smoky, medium feel, peat to the 9th.

Overall its a little much but interesting.

black is what came out of this bottle. Just retarded in how big it looked. No light escaping, in fact it sucked it in! A small head, maybe a qurter inch of dark brown rose up after a few minutes time, but mostly a very thick looking black beer.

The aroma was heaven. Rich chocolate and dark fruits melded together seemlessly. with a huge campfire like smoke note then percolating through but i was quite impressed with how it did not dominate. Really very rich and full, and easily one of the b =est smells I have come across. As it warmed some nice touches of molasses and woody notes start to dominate with a really intrsting bourbon smell in the back. again the smoke comes into play but soo nicely done i was quite imoressed. To taste this was like falling into a giant pillow. Rich and full with a woody, oak soaked, chocolate geyser of taste just exploding from the glass. Some burnt sugar notes, sweet lactose like flavors, and that really nice dark fruit tartness in the finish. Different then most other giant stouts, this one had a mind all its own.

(16.9oz bottle from Holiday Wine in SD). Pours dark brown with khaki head. Aroma is smoke, dark chocolate, and some light dark fruit. Taste follows suit with bitterness and a touch of malt sweetness. Medium bodied with oily texture. Bitter finish. Ok beer, but could use some sweetness.

A: Black with a tan head, good retention & lace.

S: Smells like a rauchbier (though not overpowering), with an underlying stout (licorice, black-strap molasses, hints of coffee & roasted nut).

T: It's just a smoked stout, though there does seem to be some crispy, almost burnt bacon flavour. Espresso, Dutch licorice, blackstrap molasses, roasted nut, solid bitterness, slight alcohol warmth.

M: Moderate body has some roasted acidity.

D: It's a good brew, just not spectacular.

This would be great around a campfire on a cool night.

A- Pours a dark chocolate-brown. Initial pour yielded a thick, creamy head, which reduced to a rich 1-finger copper-ish head.

S- Overpoweringly smokey. Notes of paprika, applewood. Moderate sweetness, almost maple syrup-y. You can definitely smell the bacon. A little salty, too.

T- Initial sweetness, lingering bitter smokiness that stays for awhile. Did i mention this beer is smokey?

M- Smmmoooth. Feels nice. Not too thick, not too thin. Drinks very nicely. I just wish it wasn't so smokey.

Overall, a solid beer. Perhaps - as far as stouts go - my palate is unrefined. If you like smoked beers, give this one a shot. If you don't, I'd save the ten bucks

T- Smoked meat begins this brew then followed by a nice roasted coffee flavor and then finsihs with some more smoke flavor

D-OVerall this was too smokey to enjoy. the coffee and meat flavor was very nice but the smoke was just soo much to enjoy. A decent stout but not something i will seek out again.

Let this bottle warm up a bit out of the fridge. Poured with a mammoth, tan, foamy, frothy, thick, creamy head and no lace. Color is an absolutely opaque brown black. Aroma is smoke, dark roasty malt, dark ripe fruit, and old leather. Taste is very similar to nose with just a hint of malt sweet. Body is good, smooth, soft and chewy with good carbonation. Finish is like flavor and of medium length. I prefer smoke beers with a milder smokieness, so I don't call this a session.

Pours a deep black with cap of dark brown bubbles, gone rather quickly and minimal lacing. Scent leads with a strong smoke and chared grain profile, noted of bitter black coffee grinds on the back. When cold, taste is dominated by a strong, but not harsh meaty smoke. As it warms, other flavors, namely spent coffee grinds and a faint touch of dark cherry. Lingering char on the palate, full bodied and smooth, quite bubbly. A nice aggressive smoke profile that doesn't overpower, a good base beer unfortunately hidden too well.

Bottle from Perry's Liquor in Livermore, CA

A - Poured a black color with a brown head that leaves lacing behind

S - Is of nice smoked malt with a strong coffee presence

T - Like the nose starts out nice and smokey then the coffee come on strong and bitters things up

M - This beer has a medium body with pretty high carbonation to it

O - As a lover of smoked beers and a person that has to be in the right mood for a coffee beer this one works out really well for me I'm enjoying the blend of flavors probably couldn't drink more than the bomber in a sitting but its still very good and worth trying if you like smoked beers

Jet black with a huge brown plume that only slowly ebbs, while leaving thick sheets of lace.
Autumn burn barrel nose, with some more humid smoky traits of campfire and peat. I love a good rauchbier, but most (if not all) of the deep, rich stout qualities are drowned out here.
It enters the mouth with a quick espresso burst. It shuffles towards dark chocolate and oatmeal, but then is obscured by smoke. Dry and ashen, with dry leaves, and fragrant cigar ashes. Its fades on the finish, leaving coffee grounds and bitter cocoa in its wake.
Fullish bodied, lowly carbonated, glassy textured, but non-cloying. Though it seems a touch thinner than the non-rauch version, which is likely a trick of the mind.
As a smoke-head, this is tremendously drinkable, with the smoke being a pronounced asset, yet not overwhelming completely. But the wonderful Beer Geek stout attributes are stifled quite a bit.

Pours jet black with some foam the color of caramel, mocha, and milky coffee. Aroma is peat, smoke, wet campfire, and a little bit of moldy chocolate. Here is a summary of collective taste descriptions:

oh my god this is so horrible
liquid smoke
tastes like burnt popcorn smells
ashy
hickory
smoked meat
like chewing on ash

I honestly didn't get any bacon out of this; certainly not as much as Schlenkerla. This certainly delivers the goods in terms of smokiness, but it wore me down in a hurry. Before the end of my half-bottle, I was 100% burned out. No pun intended.

A - Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a one-finger, light brown head of bubbly foam. It left thin trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of smoke and bacon. Nice coffee notes, too.

T - It tasted of smoked meats with some bitter black coffee. There was a touch of burnt molasses, too.

M - It was crisp and smooth. Way too many floaties that make the last 2 onces a drain pour. Medium bodied.

O - This is a tasty smoked/coffee beer. The sediment at the end was a draw back. Too much age maybe?

Picked up a bomber at CBX awhile back... Been looking forward to cracking this one.

A: Pours a deep black into a snifter; head is a dark, butter brown, about a thumb’s width; not much lace, though.

S: Sweet roasted malts; mesquite burned wood; some chocolate in the background. Ahhh, the smokiness...

T: Quite a bit of smoke on this one; roasty malts follow, with some citrus rind hops way in the back. Smoky.

M: Rich, velvety, full-bodied and smooth; lower carbonation, but there’s still some zing.

O: Smoked beers are polarizing, I think... but I’m in the crowd that loves ‘em - especially smoked porters and stouts. This is a nice, savory brew that I really enjoyed. Wish I had some for a campfire or a pulled pork dinner. Delicious.

Ok before I get into the details of this beer, I got this because of the hype I heard about the bacon flavor. I normally do not drink smoked beers. I'm just not into them. This beer however, blew me away.

The pour into my snifter was what I expected a two finger mocha colored head and a body that was black as night. What I expect for a stout from Mikkeller. The smell was good, however I got more smoke than bacon but I can tell why Mikkeller named it the Beer Geek Bacon for the European release. There is a hint of saltiness in the smell of the smoke. Let me add there is a really strong smoke scent. I did not get any coffee at all, which was listed as an ingredient. The taste however is where this beer takes it above the good rating I gave for the prior two categories. In the flavor you get the coffee on the middle of the mouth aftertaste once the initial smokiness fades away. Again the only notion of bacon is in the aftertaste, once swallowed. There is this salty flavor that is hard to define. The mouthfeel was dry dry dry and I found this to be exceptional for this type of beer. Overall this was an amazing beer. The overall experience of the beer improved as the beer warmed and I loved the complexity. Those not into smoke should stay away it is pretty profound but for an extreme beer lover, this was great and at 7.5 it hit the spot.

Pitch black, huge brown frothy head, good looking stout.

Wood smoke and roasted coffee in the nose.

Tastes of smoked malt, campfire, and coffee. I get a little of the band-aid, but it doesn't bother me. I also get some chocolate milk, which blends quite nice with the smoke. I wasn't really getting any bacon from this, which is just fine, as I actually found Schlenkerla to be overly meaty.

Smooth mouthfeel, coats the mouth nicely. I did run into a strange congealed mass though, not sure what that is about.

The last rauchbier I tried kind of scared me off smoked beers, but I thought this blended in some smoked flavor nicely with more typical stout notes, and I enjoyed it.

Nice smoked stout, noticeable charred but not too assertive, albeit best suited for those eager for that range.

Presentation: 500 ml brown capped bottle. Simple front label design, black Mikkeller branding with a column of smoke and the name resembling a slice of bacon. Includes a line noting the style and smoked character. Shows Alc. by Vol. (7.5%) Served into a snifter.

A - Black pour, with a nice brown 1/2" head, fair retention and surface memory with some good lacing.

S - Smoked sense full of roasted notes, bitter charred touch, hint of coffee pushed back again under the smoked roastness.

T - Taste is nicely smoked and roasted, good malty sense with a touch of coffee, hint of chocolate, smokey bitter finish.

M - Medium/full body with moderate carbonation, fairly smooth with a nice push from the smoked touch in the palate providing part of the fuller sense.

O - It is a nice smoked brew, slightly provocative but nothing mould breaking really.

Notes: A bit thinner than some of the other geek breakfast offerings but it is nicely balanced out by the smoked sense and it retains most of the underlying essence. The nose is slightly more provocative than the flavor but, all in al,l this is quite recommendable.

Had this on-tap at the Brick Store Pub. I'm a big fan of Rauchbiers, so I was excited to try this one. Pours black with a coffee with cream head. The aroma is lightly smokey and roasty, but a bit subdued. Luckily, the taste is exceptional. Perfectly balanced roastiness with beautiful smoke notes and a meaty song of bacon throughout. Quite bitter and dry in the mouth, with late cocoa notes. A really cool beer.

A- Fantastic head on top of this black beauty. One of the darkest colored heads I've seen, deep dark nearly chocolate brown. It's a little lighter on top than the edges. Milkshake like consistency, thick, froathy, and creamy. Settles to a rather large cap, sparse lacing.

S- This one has alot of campfire smoke upon first whiffs. if you keep your nose in this long enough you can detect a generous amount of chocolate malt. I detect a small trace of sweetness but its really hard to get past the char!

T- Dark chocolate is quickly washed away with flavors of roasted malt. Light coffee bitterness near the finish is overwhelmed with smoke and the two linger on the palate with mild tobacco. More balanced than the nose, and quite enjoyable.

M- Mouthfeel is very good as well. Slightly above medium weight, carbonation is somewhere around the same.

O- Kind of dissapointed I didn't have this with some BBQ, but it was great on its own, I thought they did a nice job incorporating the smoke in this.
