Woo hoo looking forward to this one. Thanks Dave.

The beer appears near black with a half inch of head the color of wet sand on the beach. Aromas include dark chocolate, a large my bill, Danish roast. Super malty and thick with a healthy roasted malt presence, followed by bitter chocolates and a touch of warming heat in the finish. Cognac George is one of my favorite stouts, and while this beer lacks that amazing complexity, it's still damn good.

A: Pours a jet black with a thin, creamy tan mousse that recedes in no time, leaving only a wisp of lacing in the glass.

S: Aromas of espresso, leather, roasted grain, woodsmoke, vanilla bean, heavy cream, burnt toast, dark chocolate, and dried black cherries are balanced by scents of earthy, herbal hops.

T: Notes of caramel, espresso, leather, dark chocolate, vanilla bean, heavy cream, roasted grain, blackberry, black currant, raisins, prunes, dried black cherries, burnt toast, herbs, woodsmoke, and blood orange rind wash across the palate. The finish is bitter, roasty, and velvety with subtle impressions of herbs, dark chocolate, espresso, and tart citrus.

M: Very full in body and smooth in texture. Carbonation is delicate and nuanced. Alcohol is ever present, but somewhat restrained. A very easy beer to sip to be sure.

O: A great imperial stout. Very nicely balanced and with more than enough complexity to satisfy.

11.2oz bottle poured into a Surly Darkness tulip. Purchased for $9. Consumed with '10 Swedish bottling (shown in picture).

A- Pours a motor oil black that is completely opaque creating a quarter finger thick dark mocha brown head that recedes fairly quickly to a flat top, nice subtle carbonation for the style. 4.25

'10 bottling- similar but not as much carbonation or head. 3.75

S- Rich dark chocolate malts, light fudge, slight dark fruits, hint of raisins and molasses, faint hops. About average aroma strength with decent complexity, almost no booze present. 4

'10 bottling- not nearly as much chocolate, instead more dark fruits of plums, raisins, port, and slight oxidation 4

T- Thick dark chocolate, chocolate fudge, raisins, molasses, bitter cocoa nibs, slight bitter hops on the backend with lingering bitter cocoa nibs. Very decadent tasting with a nice complex chocolate presence, a little bit too bitter on the finish but almost no alcohol burn. 4.25

'10 bottling- Dark fruits, light milk chocolate, raisins, light plums, finishes with more chocolate, slight oxidation, and a hint of dark fruits. Not nearly as much chocolate or fudge as the new one but just as flavorful with a more complex dark fruit presence and none of the bitterness the newer bottling had.

M- Thick, very full bodied, finishes velvety, nice carbonation presence for the style. 4.25

'10- Not nearly as thick, much more slick, slight less carbonated (not that the newer one was that carbonated), no alcohol what-so-ever, even more drinkable then the newer one. 4.5

O- George is a great RIS and definitely one of the better brews I've had for them. If you like rich, decadent dark beers you'll probably love this beer. My only two knocks on it are the price and the slight bitterness on the backend. 4.25

'10 bottling- This bottling was definitely better then the newer one, which suggests aging it a little bit might be better. Although this one didn't quite have as much flavor as the newer one or the chocolate presence it didn't have the bitterness that I didn't like as much in the newer one and if anything it was more drinkable. 4.5

Note- Ratings are based on newer version.

Pours thick and black with a scant head of chocolate colored foam that falls fast. Nose is mily chocolate. No alcohol. Earth and the sweet malt underpinnings. Taste is roasty malt. Nothing burnt. Caramel, cream and a touch of wood and char. A bit of cherry int he background and a small warmth from alcohol in the finish. Bitter black and dry. Some weeds and hop grassiness. The flavor is authentic chocolate and cream on a full soft body.
