On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours slightly hazy, honey amber color (I should add that all of these yeast ales from Mikkeller look pretty much the same), with good decent head retention and lots of sticky lacing. The nose is about what you'd expect, with the beer showing considerable sour funk, orange and cherry. On the palate, there's really a lot going on in this beer. The sour funk and fruit are all there, but with some pepper, a hint of ginger and some hoppy bitterness in the finish. The sweet fruit plays very well with the sour funk, adding to the beer's complexity. Mouthfeel is medium bodied in this nicely carbonnated beer, and I'm impressed by the amount of flavor it delivers. Drinkability is quite good, with the alochol well disguised and nicely integrated into the flavor profile.

Not bad at all. Very nive effort from Mikkeler.

Poured from 11.2 oz bottle into Unibroue tulip.

A - Poured a crisp amber with a tall collar and super frothy and clingly lacing.

S - Pretty hoppy, but a pleasant even hoppy smell. Not overbearing. Subtle sour notes in the background as well as a hint of citrus, spices, and earthy tones. Not as funky as I was expecting. Actually, quite pleasant smelling.

T - Nicer balance of hops than the nose would lead you to believe. A touch sour, but somewhat subdued. A little funky, but nowhere near as funky as some other Brett beers I've tried.

M - Pretty boring. Very smooth, but not really alive. Kind of watery, but flavorful. Leaves a dry mouth with a slightly bitter aftertaste. Has almost an applejuice like feel to it with a slightly sour beer flavor.

D - Extremely easy to drink. Not really powerful in any one direction and very smooth. Alc is hidden pretty well. Not too sour, not too hoppy. A very easy drinker. If there was a beer flavored juice out there, this would be it.

33cl bottle into my Orval glass...If you are the best of a bad bunch, does that make you good, that is the questions Socrates posisted...Anyway this is a lightly sour beer from start to finsih. Its just sour, no flavor, depth or complexity. If you like sour you might like this, but its really just boring.

The beer pours a yellow-orange color with a huge white head. The aroma is excellent. I could smell this beer all day long. I get a lot of orange citrus notes with some great brett and leather qualities. The flavor is brett, oranges and caramel malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. This was sampled with the other four beers in this series and this one is head and shoulders above the rest.

A - Clear, but a fairly rich amber ale color. Thick orange head dissipates quickly, but leaves a lot of lacing.
S - Floral, and very lemony, with an obvious brett funk. The grassy hop notes, combined with the horse blanket brett, kind of evoke zoo smells, but I love it.
T - Orange/citrus notes, with a severe bitterness and a dry brett overtone. Grassy, earthy undertones. Overall, though, a somewhat obviously dry beer, where the brett and hops dominate, but seem to lack any sort of accompanying malt or sweetness for balance. It is certainly tasty, and refreshing, and the brett is the title character, but I think just a slight increase in the depth of the malt would benefit the beer. The aftertaste leaves a tiny taste of malt, and it really seems to balance the flavor. My particular bottle had very little lactic sourness, though many tastings seem to have had a strong sourness. No idea how old this bottle is, though.
M - Remarkably dry, truly...this beer really does continue the point of the series, and highlights all the good that brett can bring to a beer. It has a nice creaminess to contrast the pop of the hops and brett.
D - Very easy drinking for 8%, and a nice summer sipper with its floral, zesty dryness.

A - Poured a slightly cloudy, copper color with a small, white head of fluffy foam. It slowly receded to leave soapy trails of residue on the glass.

S - Great phenolic aroma with funky barnyard aroma.

T - Great sour fruit flavor with a good deal of funky bite. Some underlying maltiness adds a little balance along with some hop spice.

M - It has a bit of puckering mouthfeel with all of the tart and sourness. A medium bodied beer.

D - This is the best of the yeast series - a really tasty wild ale.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.

a - Pours an orange-golden color with moderate carbonation evident and 1.5 fingers of fluffy off white head that lasts for several minutes.

s - Smells of funk, sour fruit, citrus, and some tart.

t - Tastes of bret, and is super funky. Also tastes of citrus, tart fruits, and wheat. Also some lactic sourness in the taste.

m - Light to medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A decent wild ale that is high on funk. This is the first beer in the yeast series I've gotten to try and I'm looking forward to seeing where it stacks up against the other beers in the series. I enjoyed the smell more than the taste, but would try again.

Another beer experiment from Mikkeller. The same wort fermented with 5 different yeast strains. They made their point but I would have used a cleaner malt bill to make this point. Most of the beers were big and heavy for the different yeasts and imparted too much of their own character to the beers.

Both my wife (who doesn't really like wild ales) and I agreed that this was the best out of the 5. Beer is red and slightly hazy. Almost no carbonation visible and the head breaks quickly.

Aroma is kind of basementy and funky with this strong lactic note. Very Bretty.

Beer is almost cherry flavored with this distinct tartness. Mildly sweet, lactic sour with some citric as well. Drinkability high and mouthfeel is great. Minimal carbonation in the mouth. Most unique out of the group and the best beer.

Poured from an 11.2oz bottle into a Mikkeller tulip.

A: Pours a rich looking, deep golden-orange. Sitting on top is a massively thick and creamy, khaki colored glob of foam that retained for ages. Much sparkly lace was left behind and the carbonation was pretty lively.

S: Equal parts musty funk, bright citrus, white grape, lime zest, and a hint of piney hops.

T: Pretty tart with a funky back. Loads of lime with snatches of lemon here and there. Old, musty hay and damp dirt.

M: Pretty bright on the tongue at first. As it develops, it becomes drier with a hint of chalkiness at the end of the finish.

D: Really pretty nice. This was my first of the series and I hope the rest to follow are at least as good if not better!

First and only yeast series i have had so far. Poured up a nice golden color with a nice white head. Smelled like fermented horse piss and dirt. Tasted funky and semi sour with some grape tones being thrown around as well. I enjoyed this beer but its definitely an acquired taste.

Served in a tumbler at ChurchKey.

The first entry in my...horizontal???...at ChurchKey. You know the staff knows you when, as you sit down at the bar, the bartender asks, "Let me guess, you want one of each?" Indeed I do. This one pours a clear copper-amber topped by about two fingers of ecru froth. They all pretty much look like this. The nose comprises sour white grapes, funk, wet blanket, wet hay, must, and, oddly enough, peanuts. The taste dips a bit, dominated by a harsh lactic sour that just doesn't seem to fit like other wilds. Cobwebs, wet blankets, limes, and swiss cheese round out the taste, making a not-so-enjoyable combination on the tongue. The body is a light medium, with a light carbonation and a rather dry finish. Overall, I thought this the weakest of the series, the brett not really in synch with the base beer as much as some of the other strains.
