Pours a very dark brown, only a slight brown tinge when held up to the light. Head is virtually non-existent, maybe a few bubbles around the edge and a ring of foam left. Not great.

Smell is quite dark with a strength to it, quite smokey actually and a fair amount of oak as well. Yeah, lots of nice woody notes complementing dark roasty cocoa aromas well. Pretty good.

Taste is quite intense, with whiskey notes all over it. Very strong and boozey, firstly on the front with a crescendo of fairly sweet but smokey flavours, then gets quite intense with dark, roasty notes, espresso and unsweetened chocolate. Booziness returns on the back, but without the warmth, just a dry and oaky whiskey flavour with a highly attenuated grainy note. Pretty nice, but can't say I'm overawed. Could use more roastiness to cover the booze character.

Reasonably slick mouthfeel, not as full as it could have been, and leaves fairly dry. Not bad, but could have been better.

Yeah, some nice characters on this beer, not overdone. For an imperial stout it's pretty tame and drinkable.

Nearly 3 years of age. Still before BB though.
Pours pitch black with almost no head. Some large chunks of sediment! Nose shows complex roast, coffee liqueur, cocoa, fresh ground coffee, oatmeal, woody oak and soft whisky.
The flavours are not quite as impressive. Roast malt, old coffee, a bit of booze and some whisky.
Pretty much flat. Needs carbonation.

Pours black with no head. Light smoke, roast, a touch of peat, and some whiskey. Fairly heavy on the roast, a touch of cocoa powder, and a bit of alcohol and green apple. The flavor is somewhat heavy on the cocoa. Light whiskey flavor, some oak, and a lot of roasted malt. Some green apple and alcohol and light toffee sweetness. Kind of watery and flat.

Thanks to mrmiles for sharing this one at NoSignsOfPain's birthday bottleshare hosted by mrbubbler.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, coffee, peat, smoke, and wood. Taste is much the same with an extremely woody and peaty aftertaste. There is a medium amount of bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer is pretty much flat with a medium body. Overall, this is a pretty good beer and I am very glad I got to try this one but the mouthfeel is a huge issue for me.

Bottle courtesy of bosse.

A - jet black, no head whatsoever

S - Amazing nose: Tons of dark roasted coffee, smoke and dirty peat.

T - Definitely some coffee, and a solid bit of peaty scotch. The finish is incredibly ashy and acrid. Great until the finish. Overall, just kind of "meh" taste.

M - This beer has thinned out a bit more than the regular. A bit hot, but not terrible.

O - Solid beer, cool variation. Definitely far better than the bourbon, and a very cool beer that gets better the more you drink.

Thanks to ChrisPro for sharing this one. I think I have a bottle courtesy of Jeffo waiting for me in Toronto. Served in a Glunz taster glass.

A - Minimal tan foam settles to a thin collar and then eventually nothing. Very dark brown body.

S - Smells like a Coffee Crisp. Speyside influence is quite mild, especially compared to many of the other Scotch Whisky barrel-aged beers by Mikkel. Great aroma of coffee, chocolate, wafers, and oats, with a light touch of salty and smoky whisky.

T - Unfortunately, the taste is largely dominated by peat, smoke, and permanent markers, with some fairly oppressive espresso and char bitterness in the finish. Where did all the sweetness go?! Not unpalatable, but a bit of a struggle after a small serving.

M - Medium body, smooth texture, lower carbonation (first time I've seen a bottle stating carbonation levels, btw), and a dry, tannic finish. Minimal alcohol presence, even though this seems like a bigger beer than the listed 7.5%.

D - Smells fantastic, but otherwise somewhat middling. That being said, I like it significantly more than the base beer. Why does Europe get all these cool and consistently decent Mikkeller barrel-aged beers while we get the abominable Black Holes series (Cognac excepted)?

Thanks to ChrisPro for showing up with this at the Sour Bitch release.

A - Black beer, fine brown head that faded to a bit of a tight ring.

S - Smells of exceptionally peaty whiskey that has mixed with some good coffee. Slight bit of chocolate, no real alcohol on this one, this smells fantastic. I can't get over how good the peat and coffee ended up mixing.

T - Taste is just as good as the nose. Nice, smooth scotch, some good coffee, bit of cocoa, touch of barrel. Just a nice peaty beer that is mellowed a bit by the coffee for a nice blend of great flavors.

M - Almost full bodied, soft carbonation.

O - Loved this beer, one of the best peaty and scotch beers that I've had. Would love to dirnk this again.

A: Pours absolutely jet black with no foam or head whatsoever

S: It has a rich dark roast coffee and dark chocolate, and also a little bit of barrel on the nose.

T: I am really impressed with this beer. The few months aged in scotch barrels has really mellowed the hot taste of the regular breakfast. It has a rich smoky peat, unsweetened dark chocolate, and rich dark roast coffee, and a slight bit of oak.

M: The mouthfeel is really rich, but not to thick. It has very little carbonation whatsoever, but this does not hinder the flavor or feel at all

O: I am really surprised about drinking a beer that is almost flat, but that still has an immense mellow and rich flavor. I think this variation is the a lot better than the regular breakfast. I really enjoyed the subtle hints of oak and smokyiness from the barrel.

500 ML poured into a tulip

A-- Poured black, pretty syrupy and thick looking. Menacing is probably a better word. Very little head. Mostly a dark leather brown film head that had a few gurgles in it. On swirling the head did get a touch bigger and the head a touch darker but quickly went by by. A few dots of lacing on the sides of the glass and a bit of a dark cola film to this.

S-- Smells much bigger, and much badder than 7.5 %. Lots of peat, burnt molasses, overdrawn espresso, dark 90% chocolate, rolled toasted oats. A lot of aromas to this and they are thick and big.

T-- Main thing in the taste is the peat. Can tell this has been in a barrel for a while. Molasses, chocolate, and coffee. What is surprising is for how big the smell is, that the taste is more of a stout or porter than an Imperial Stout. Much easier to manage.

M-- Quite thin but also quite flavorful. Get some dark fruits and coffee acidity. The peat does slightly drop off and become more easy to deal with and get the classic stout flavors, yet the peat is there in the end. Low carbonation and medium feel to this. Finishes with a peaty overdrawn coffee acidity to this.

O-- Has some high points but also some low points. The nose is great as well as the feel. Not the most attractive looking thing at all. Expected this to be bigger than 7.5% but it is more like closer to a 6% beer. To me the barrel adds another dimension to this as you get all sorts of flavors but not the absurd ABV levels of other beers. A sipper due to the amount of peat in this making this hard to work through. Solid but not outstanding.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. Always glad to try a new version of Beer Geek Breakfast.

The beer pours a very dark brown to black color with no head. The aroma is heavy on the chocolate and roasted malt, but I also get some peet and smoked notes from the barrel aging.

The flavor is more of the same. The beer tastes like chocolate scotch with a lot of peet notes. There is also some cream and roasted malt notes.

Medium mouthfeel and low carbonation.
