375ml poured into a pint glass.

Appearance - Black beer with a huge cascading brown head. A thin cap is left by the end with bits of lace.

Smell - Dense, unsweetened chocolate, green apples, molasses, light spice/chipotles and roast, a bit of a veggie feel. The apple/chocolate/spice combo reminds me of a mini-Apple Brandy Hunahpu's in some ways. Not getting much for bourbon, but an intriguing scent overall.

Taste - A little more roast and char here with some chocolate and caramel to help balance it out. Vegetal and smoky chipotles are a little more intense with some lingering spiciness. Still not getting any bourbon, though some oak barrel seems to make an appearance now and then.

Mouthfeel - Somewhat light and slick mouthfeel with medium-low carbonation. Flashes of alcohol here and there, a bit of a sipper from the dense and spicy flavors.

Overall - I like the dense porter/chipotle interplay, though I was expecting something a bit more.

On-tap at the Mikkeller Bar in SF.

Dark. Opaque. No lacing. Smells like booze; delicious whisky. Tastes delicious. Stoutish. No smoke. Distant chipotle on the aftertaste is obvious. Barrel aging is less so. Finish is dry, bitter, and pleasant. Recommend.

Had on tap at 3floyds brew pub

Appearance - super dark , with ok head retention and good lacing for bba

Smell - smokey porter with a much improved nose thanks to bourbon barrel aging, typical addition of barrel character balances chipotle smoke

Taste - nice smoke and roared flavors, definite chipotle component but waaay better thanks to the addition of bourbon barrels, nice sweetness, vanilla and overall complexity

Mouthfeel - moderate body with a small bite to the finish, barrel adds a boozy sweetness

Overall - great for a chipotle beer, one of the better/best I have tasted

A - Pitch black, one finger brown head, decent lacing.

S - Chipotle pepper (slightly vegetal), vanilla cream, brown sugar, light bourbon.

T - Dark cocoa, spicy chipotle, oak, brown sugar, light bourbon, lingering chipotle kick.

M - Smooth, thinner side of medium body, medium-low carbonation, dry finish.

O - Body could be bigger and bourbon could be more pronounced, but this still a damn fine beer.

$15.49 at Stateline Liquors. Elkton, MD

Pours black with nice tanned head and lacing.

Smell is dusty smoke (gunpowder), bourbon, chocolate, honey. Red wine. Delicious and complex nose.

Taste is vinous- get some tannic sourness and also oak bitterness. More of that smokiness and bourbon and perhaps a little bit of the chilli heat floating above my tongue. After the swallow definitely get a subtle lingering chilli note. Also generally minerally, there are lots of watery gaps in the palate though. Think this may be at least partly from age.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and sour. Do get some enjoyable red wine flavours which vary in the degree to which they show themselves.

Overall very enjoyable beer. Good idea and get some great notes from it but the beer doesn't have the body or depth to stand up to the age it's gone through in my opinion. Varies a lot as you get through the bottle.

A pricy but enjoyable treat. The original is still the best though.
