Notes/Commercial Description:
A coffee-IPA.

Ingredients: Water, malt, barley flakes, Tomahawk hops, coffee and yeast.

The coffee comes from Swedish coffee roasting-house Koppi.

The first batch had Guji Natural organic coffee from Sidamo, Ethiopia.

The second batch had Odoo Shakiso Coffee from Ethiopia.

Brewed at De Proefbrouwerij, Belgium.

Mikkeller Coffee IPA is overall unique. Not an everyday beer but worth a try.

A: Cloudy orange color with little head.

S: Slight coffee and citrus aroma.

T: Presence of malt. Finish is dry with slight coffee aftertaste. Light hops taste.

M: Not much carbonation.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 750 mL bottle into a Russian River pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy, burnished gold with a good amount of visible carbonation. It tries to form a substantial off-white head during the pour, but it fades almost instantly.

S: Medium-roasted coffee, some pine and touch of dark citrus hops. I don't get a malt aroma here - I think the coffee is covering it up. Smells good though.

T: Follows the nose. Coffee and hops (grapefruit/citrus with some resin) up front. Then some sweet toffee and biscuit malts to round things out. Has a roasted coffee bitterness in the hang. It develops a peppery spice, or maybe a green coffee flavor, as it warms. It's not a bad flavor, but it grows obnoxious after awhile.

M: Medium body, low carbonation sensation, moderate alcohol presence.

O: This was interesting...a bit challenging, but interesting. Especially when cold, it was good. The peppery spice I could have done without. This isn't anything I'd go back to often, but the definition of something I'm glad I tried once (especially because DayMan never made it to Florida).

A: poured from a 750 mL bottle into a tulip glass, copper colored with a large off white head that dissipates leaving some lacing, cloudy

S: west coast hops, citrus, grapefruit, lemon

T: cirtrus hops up front mixes with a pronunced coffee bitterness, it actually works well together

M: medium to full with good carbonation

O: worth seeking out for the unique blend of flavors

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a footed tulip.

A: Golden, ruby hue. Pours a 1 finger, bubbly white head. Settles quickly, but not completely. Thick, persistent lacing. Head renews with force with each new pour.

S: Pine resin, a little roasted espresso, a hint of dark chocolate, and raspberry. All components light.

T: Bitter hops, with oak chips, and a bit of sweet dark chocolate.

M: Grainy and earthy. Bitter finish.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is okay. Fair head, and some spotty lacing. Nose is a great combination of piny, roasty, and fruit notes. Harsh, bitter hops, with some wood and chocolate. Earthy and bitter. Overall, this is pretty good quaff.

Served on tap in a chalice glass

Appearance – The beer is served a bronze-reddish color with a two finger thick rocky white head. The head has a decent level of retention fading over a moderate level of time to leave a decent level of lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The coffee in the aroma wasn't as strong as I would have expected. The aroma overall was heaviest of citrus grapefruit hop as well as some herbal and piney smelling hops. Along with these smells are aromas of some breadiness as well as a little bit of caramel and some tangerine adding just a touch of sweetness to the smell overall.

Taste – Just as with the nose, the taste is very weak in coffee especially upfront. The main flavors, initially to greet the tongue, are of a IPA nature with flavors of a bready and lightly caramel and tangerine sweet taste mixed with a whole lot of grapefruit hop. As the taste advances, pine hop flavors come to the tongue with the sweeter flavors losing a little bit of ground. At the end, a light coffee flavor dose come to the tongue adding a different bitter dimension to the taste. The coffee combines with the other IPA flavors and a newly arrived herbal hop flavor to leave a rather mixed flavor IPA taste on the tongue.

Mouthfeel –The body of the beer is on the medium side in thickness and creaminess with a carbonation level that is on the average side as well. Rather fitting for the IPA style, but nothing too exceptional.

Overall – A rather easy drinking and tasty IPA overall, but really lacking in the coffee I was hoping it would deliver. Nice, but not really worth the price you will likely pay.

Bought a bottle of this from the Tobu department store in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Poured into a St. Bernardus goblet. This is a beautiful looking dark IPA, and the smell was outrageously tempting. A bitter hop with a coffee coat covering it. The taste was a little flat for me, to be honest, while it was still delicious. Overall, I really enjoyed this complicated, intriguing beer, and I would love to try it again sometime!

Bottle: standard brown 330mL bottle, average craft label.

Appearance: I made the mistake of an aggressive pour at first, and the head exploded to four fingers before settling to a rocky two-fingers. Poured more carefully and found a two-finger off-white head sitting on top of a hazy orange-copper body. The head very slowly drops past a very rocky two-fingers to a solid ring around the glass. Amazing lacing too. Not much carbonation visible through the haze.

Aroma: after letting it warm out of the fridge for approx. 15 - 20 min, this beer offers up aromas of citric hops (and plenty of them!) and some subtle coffee. Definitely promising.

Taste: I didn't taste the coffee I was expecting with this beer. There was the prolific citric hops with some fantastic bread and biscuit malts backing up. Possibly a touch of coffee, but I would like to think I would notice if it was that strong as I am not a big coffee fan at all.

Aftertaste: lingers nicely, with some of the hop bitterness but not too much, and some malt hanging around. Very nice.

Mouth feel: for a highly-hopped IPA, the Koppi is quite smooth - almost oily in its smoothness. Medium- to- heavier in body with a lower but spiky carbonation. Brings the flavour across brilliantly.

Overall: I must admit that I approached this beer with more than a little hesitation, as coffee is one of the only things I cannot stand (though not so bad as a flavour in beer - go figure). In this IPA however the bread and biscuit malts and plethora of citric hops combine well with the coffee aroma / flavour to produce one of the better AIPAs I have had to date. Pretty damn expensive at over AU$140 a case (2013), but good for a 4-pack now and then.
