Bought a bottle of this from the Tobu department store in Ikebukuro, Tokyo. Poured into a St. Bernardus goblet. This is a beautiful looking dark IPA, and the smell was outrageously tempting. A bitter hop with a coffee coat covering it. The taste was a little flat for me, to be honest, while it was still delicious. Overall, I really enjoyed this complicated, intriguing beer, and I would love to try it again sometime!

Bottle: standard brown 330mL bottle, average craft label.

Appearance: I made the mistake of an aggressive pour at first, and the head exploded to four fingers before settling to a rocky two-fingers. Poured more carefully and found a two-finger off-white head sitting on top of a hazy orange-copper body. The head very slowly drops past a very rocky two-fingers to a solid ring around the glass. Amazing lacing too. Not much carbonation visible through the haze.

Aroma: after letting it warm out of the fridge for approx. 15 - 20 min, this beer offers up aromas of citric hops (and plenty of them!) and some subtle coffee. Definitely promising.

Taste: I didn't taste the coffee I was expecting with this beer. There was the prolific citric hops with some fantastic bread and biscuit malts backing up. Possibly a touch of coffee, but I would like to think I would notice if it was that strong as I am not a big coffee fan at all.

Aftertaste: lingers nicely, with some of the hop bitterness but not too much, and some malt hanging around. Very nice.

Mouth feel: for a highly-hopped IPA, the Koppi is quite smooth - almost oily in its smoothness. Medium- to- heavier in body with a lower but spiky carbonation. Brings the flavour across brilliantly.

Overall: I must admit that I approached this beer with more than a little hesitation, as coffee is one of the only things I cannot stand (though not so bad as a flavour in beer - go figure). In this IPA however the bread and biscuit malts and plethora of citric hops combine well with the coffee aroma / flavour to produce one of the better AIPAs I have had to date. Pretty damn expensive at over AU$140 a case (2013), but good for a 4-pack now and then.

Done in a horizontal tasting with To Ol Sleep Over Coffee IIPA and Bed And Breakfast from Brouwerij De Molen.

Eye: Weakest of the three here, pours with very little head and spotty lacing. Color on all of these are about the same-murky tan/light brown.

Nose: Hops right up front with some subtle coffee aromas in the background, the weakest in coffee aroma and in hop aroma of the three. It smells nice, but the other two just beat this one into submission. As it warms a bit the coffee is taking over the aroma and hops are falling off.

Tongue: Very nice! Hop flavor upfront, but not really much bitterness from them. Bitterness in this beer comes from the coffee flavor in the back. Coffee flavor lingers and after the swallow some hop flavor sneaks in there as well. This beer has a single track flavor, or really it would be a "double track" flavor-hops then coffee. Thats all there is to it. Mouthfeel is thin, this beer could benefit from a little more body, not much but just a little more. Carbonation is active and perhaps that also gives the illusion of a thinner than is body.

Drinkability: This is one definitely worth checking out. One that I would definitely buy again. Quite different from the To Ol Sleep Over IPA, this one is single minded whereas the To Ol is more complex and interesting. I can see myself buying this one again. Basically if you want something single minded=Mikkeller, complex and depth=To Ol, a big let down=Bed and Breakfast

From bottle at The Festival. Murky hazy gold pour with little head. Strong coffe aroma, very vegetal however, lots of green pepper smell, raw beans, very much like kopi luwak. Strong vegetal coffee flavor as well, some hoppiness, resinous, ultra vegetal.

Shared between friends and poured into Crown and Rose Pub nonics from 750ml capped bottle. Hazed dark bronze color topped with 3+ finger eggshell froth leaving behind a nice wall of lace marking each sip. Nose leads on to pine and grapefruit peel, but the coffee is right there with it. Not too sure of this. It's foreign territory as far as beer goes. Multiple hop characters - floral, earthy, and fruity. The coffee is not like I expected - it's very robust, but balances out nicely in this beer. I can't believe it's that good. It just works out somehow. There is also a buttery character that adds oil to the medium body making it on the velvety side. For such a strange blend, this beer is full of win. I won't hesitate to buy it again.

Beer bottle (33 cl.) purchased from La Cervoiserie, and tasted in 2013.

Appearance : deep red color, with huge foamy head (but too big bubbles)
Smell : spicy and coffee aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : coffee and chocolate flavors with spicy notes, leading to a dry and bitter finish.
Drinkability : a good beer in the style American IPA.

Really have looked forward to this one and was excited to find it at Argonaut liquors in Denver.

A: slightly hazy, orangish-gold, some light carbonation and light lacing.

S: Burnt, acrid coffee grounds and dirt. Lots of both. earthy, mushroom like hop smell is there too. The slightly musty, citrusy hops are barely there. I wonder what this would be like fresh, but it really isn't pleasant right now.

T: more earthy, burnt tasting, coal and ash. It tastes like chewing on old coffee grounds and some earthy weird hops. Not pleasant by any means. I didn't expect to struggle to drink a glass with my friends. There is some slight malt sweetness there, but that's the only redeeming quality.

M: slick, oily, slightly thin. light carbonation.

O: I really was let down by this. I figured at the worst, it would be weird and not meld well with the hops and coffee. Instead, the coffee character was disguisting, and the ipa character was nonexistent or barely there. What a mess. I know this is difficult to brew or nail, but this was a huge waste of excitement and money.
