Enjoyed a bottle poured into an American pint glass at Beer Revolution here in Calgary. Rather dark in color, a brownish red amber hue with a copious amount of dark beige head. Not one of the better known hop varieties at this time ... All the descriptions I've found say to expect a rather pungent high alpha acid piney and spicy experience without a ton of citrus or tropical flavors. Does smell reasonably fruity and floral, recalling gummy worm candy and citrus rind, along with the expected earthy and spicy notes. What I found odd was that although the hops were prominent on the nose, the taste was initially rather malty. The first gulp was all molasses, toffee, and (I swear) chocolate cake with just the barest hints of orange rind and tobacco. Not what I was expecting. Does evolve toward a more salient hop flavor, evoking a chocolate orange and then some cigar tobacco, kitchen herbs (rosemary?), bitter leafy greens, pine needles, and nutty green tea, with some currant notes showing up late. Consistent with the malt-forward palate, I found this brew to be on the chewy side, with a somewhat prickly mouthfeel and a flavorsome finish that includes continuously developing spicy citrus peel and toasted notes. Unique IPA in its malt profile and evolving hop flavors that start small and grow rather earthy and spicy as happens with Bravo's parent Zeus. Maybe too malty for the style, which is interesting considering that other Mikkeler single hop brews do not yield this effect. Could have been an old bottle but I suspect not.

11.2 ounce bottle into a teku glass. Beautiful, majestic, glowing, deep orange in the glass. Head retention all the way down, beautiful lacing coating the glass the whole way as well. This is how an IPA should be made - American craft breweries take notes. Perfect infusion of the hop into the beer... Feels like shoving your face into a giant bag of hops. Your tastebuds and nose will be assaulted with hop character. Perfect malt balance. I would bathe in vats of any one of the Mikkeller single hop series any day, and the Bravo is no different.

12oz Bottle poured slowly into a pint glass. Very dark orange, red, amber color. Has a large amount of malt that is being picked up by the nose. No noticeable hop scent at all. Very malty with a little bit of almost sour bitterness. There is no hop flavor at all. The head was very minimal and was gone as I was only 1/3 of the way through the glass. Feels very heavy in the mouth. May have waited a little too long on this one as I see that it has been retired.

330ml bottle purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne by my brother.

Pours a hazed amber hue, quite deep and quite dark (indeed, perhaps slightly darker than the others in the series), with a fine froth of yellowish film across the top that stays as a solid ring around the edge. Some streaky, soap-suds lace, and fine stremas of carbonation when tilted. Body looks solid. Overall, it looks pretty decent.

Nose is spicy with hops, with a very herbal, almost savoury tone to them. I get suggestions of rosemary and lavender, along with a slight nuttiness and some sweeter citrus: orange pith perhaps. Slightly earthy as well. It strikes me as the sort of aroma you get from high-alpha, low-oil hops, suggesting Bravo's better used just for bittering.

Strangely enough, the palate is a lot sweeter than I expected, with fruit characters of peach and a little marmalade coming through. There's still a prickly, herbal bitterness along the spine of the beer, but the body cocoons it meaning that it doesn't have the broad impact or the resiny bite on the finish it might have had otherwise. In the aftertaste are ghosts of those herbs: rosemary, perhaps a little thyme. It's pleasant enough.

Feel is solid enough: faintly round and smooth, with a carbonic percussion.

Overall, this is an okay IPA, but perhaps a lesser entry in the series. The hop really didn't wow me with anything it had, and in some senses it just didn't have the skills required: the aroma is too dank and herbal, the bitterness restrained (at least as it is used here). Certainly not one of my favourite Mikkeller single hops.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 22/5/13

A murky brownish amber with quite a bit of sediment, yeast I'm assuming, lots of slow little bubbles moving through what appears to be a thick liquid, solid two fingers of foam has great retention and leaves a few distinct rings of lace followed by random patches

S earthy nose with faint pine and some floral hops, yeast and caramel, nothing too exciting

T a little rind but its not very strong, much like the nose, tastes a little faded

M leaning towards full but you don't have much time to judge before it foams up, mild grit after the fact

O It's OK but nothing special, pretty basic and it just doesn't taste fresh even though it just showed up in Alberta

I'm glad I tried it but I wouldn't go looking for a second bottle, not sure what to make of the 8161203 I see on the cap, the 12 might be an indicator of an old IPA, I'm off to check Pappat444's site Fresh Beer Only and see if I can get to the bottom of this

Serving type: 330 ml bottle. No freshness date.

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is cloudy amber. A finger or so of dense, buttery, light tan head dissipated slowly, leaving a spotted lacing, dense ring around the edge, and foam stuck to the glass. There is also quite a bit of floating sedimentation.

Smell: Mostly malty with lemon zest and a bit grapefruit and orange. Sweet caramel, toffee, honey, a little pine, grassy and earthy hops.

Taste: It has a thick, full mouth-feel. The hop bitterness attacks the taste buds; I could even feel a tingling in my jaw and ear. The bitterness aside, there is lemon zest, grapefruit, orange, pine, and earthy hops. The bitterness weakens as it warms, but the malts are overpowered except for hints of toffee and honey.

Drinkability: This is a bitter pill that demonstrates the power of Bravo.

On tap at Craft Beer co in brixton.

Poured in a tulip half pint glass. Appeared a hazy copper with a fluffy white head.

On the nose was floral hops and sweet malt, good so far.

Taste was disappointing, some bitterness upfront but it didn't last, the malt took over and the beer had a really thin, weak mouthfeel.

I don't know if the keg was old, which may be the reason why the malt took over and the hops lost their kick. Won't seek this out again
