The continuing fun (??) of the single hopped series by Mikkeller.

This beer strikes me as more pungent and sharp than the other single hopped IPAs I've had so far. A bit more vibrant and bright than the others. Other than that, I'm not quite sure what I have to add.

Typical body and head for the series, maybe a bit less hazy than some.

Orange citrus on the nose, pretty aromatic compared to the Sorachi Ace I just had. Usual notes of sweet caramel malt.

Tastes bitter, with notes of orange peel and some orange flesh. a little spiciness. Ends dry and bitter.

Body is medium and carbonation is moderate, more fizzy than creamy.

Overall, a nice expression of this hop which has a strong prominence that is balanced by the caramel malt. I could have another of this one.

A. Hazy coppery amber in color with two fingers of eggshell colored soapy head that recedes to a half finger cap in two minutes, leaving plenty of lace curtains behind on the glass. Just gorgeous presentation.

S. Aroma consists of light amounts of florals combined with citric peel, caramel malt. Not much there to smell...

T. A very brief flash of honey dries out in an instant with the introduction of citric peel and peppery pine flavor mixed with a lightly bready tone. Finish is nicely extended for several seconds with a smooth and gradual pine fade-out.

M. Medium body and carbonation, gets slightly oily in texture (but not annoyingly so) if allowed to warm up towards room temp.

Honestly, this is a nice beer, but I'm having a hard time distinguishing it from my memory of the regular Galena offering. Either there isn't really a significant difference, or my palate may need some more "training" (more beer experience) to become sensitive enough to tell the difference.

A: Pours a hazy, ruddy amber with a thick, rocky white head.

S: Aromas of caramel, biscuits, lemon, bitter orange, herbs, and a vegetal, onion-like bitterness are present on the nose.

T: Notes of caramel, biscuits, lemon, grapefruit, bitter orange, kumquat, mint, sage, and white onion wash across the palate. The finish is bitter and astringent with huge mint, kumquat, lemon, and bitter orange flavors.

M: This ale is medium-bodied and dry. Carbonation is a bit gentle compared to the other ales in this series.

O: This is a solid enough American-style IPA, but I was expecting much more forceful hop bitterness. Super Galena is a high alpha acid hop varietal that should present relatively clean, muscular flavors, but what came out in this beer was slightly muddy. Not a bad effort to be sure, but also not the best showcase of this particular varietal's qualities.

Another single hop IPA from Mikkeller...love the idea.

A caramel, light brown pour. Nice fluffy white head. Great lacing as it drinks.

Light caramel and biscuit aroma. A hint of pine and citrus zest.

The hops in this one border more on the metallic side, with some pine and wood. Some citrus is lingering. Toasted bread and some sweet bread. It's a solid beer, with the mouthfeel as an IPA should be; somewhat sweet but a good bite on the end.

Served on tap in a tasting glass at Bangers & Lace. Tettnanger, Palisade, Cascade, Galena, Super Galena, and Simcoe were all tasted side by side.

Appearance The appearance of the single hop series does not really vary from beer to beer. Each one is a golden caramel color with a fluffy whit ehead that displays good retention and leaves a web of lace down the glass.

Smell: Compared to the regular Galena, the honey malt is still there, but the clean bitter aroma is amplified even further.

Taste: Soft honey and caramel sweetness vanishes quite quickly into a very strong bitter flavor that lasts well into the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The carbonation and body are medium, Smooth and creamy as well.

Overall: Even more bitter than the regular Galena, but other than that they are difficult to tell apart.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is full of grass and earth notes, with some biscuit malt mixed in.

The flavor is different than the aroma. I get a lot of orange citrus notes, as well as a lot of very sweet candy notes which don't really meld well with the other flavors. I also get some biscuit malt notes and the bitterness is low.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a copper color and a hazy texture. There was a huge foamy, long-lasting head. Very good lacing.

S: A nice, hoppy aroma with some traces of citrus as well.

T: Tasted primarily of hops, with citrus (grapefruit), and a trace of malt in the finish. The super galena hops aren't quite as harsh as their galena cousins. A decent enough flavor, if a bit on the thin side.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This is a somewhat uneven beer, but likable nonetheless.

Served in a snifter at The Firkin.

One day, I'm gonna see if I can try all of these Single Hop brews. This seems like a good place to the start the quest (yeah, I've had a couple others already, but now I'm trying harder to complete the set). It pours a clear sunset amber-brown topped by a finger of cream foam. The nose comprises caramel, cantaloupe, light honeydew, light orange zest, and a touch of both vanilla and banana in the very back. The taste holds notes of light pine, toffee, honeydew, light watermelon flesh, and mixed greens. The body is a rather light medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a very smooth feel. Overall, a very enjoyable IPA. I'm gonna haveta look into this Super Galena hop for some future homebrewing...

12 ounce bottle poured into a pint glass. Deep copper color with a sticky khaki head. Smells of cooking apples, toffee and fresh bread. Flavor is malty, clearly past its prime, with little hop character left. Maybe just a little fruitiness and even less bitterness. At this point it just tastes like a boring amber ale from some no-name brew pub. All these old Mikkeller IPAs have given me a 'thrilling' glimpse into what the base beer tastes like, but as a single hop showcase they fail. Despite being assured that these were relatively fresh, all 3 versions I tried were virtually interchangeable.

Appearance - amber brown tint, with a head that recedes quickly to a white very thin layer.

Smell - i get a peppery piny and citrus notes, with some sweet caramel hints. nothing too complex.

Taste - there is a smooth sweetness that it noticed mixed in with some hops. The hops are a kind of piny citrus. once the brew warms a bit the alcohol gives almost a sourness to the finish.

Mouthfeel - There is a fair amount of carbonation but the bubbles are very small (if that makes sense) not sure how else to describe it. The brew offers a dry and yet oily feel in the mouth.

Overall - I can definitely see the type of hop it is and definitely need to try the other one that I bought to compare the two different hops. Not a bad brew, but definitely expensive at $5 a 12oz.

OK, it’s time for the Super Galena review and tasting after the disappointment of the Galena version of the series.
Beer essentially looks the same, but I do notice the head is more creamy in texture and leaves more lacing. (exact glass rinsed, not a glass cleanliness issue) It’s a good looking beer, that’s for sure.
Again a fairly muted aroma (like Galena) but I sense a bit more fruit here. Also a note of chalk or mineral in the aroma.
Very malty, a touch of abv in the flavor. Some black pepper. A decent amount of fruit. Some toasty bread notes. A more bitter finish but still not very IPA like
I am starting to doubt this series.. Still have Simcoe and Centennial in the fridge for tomorrow.
Hopefully those are better.

A: Deep red-hued amber in color. Forms an enormous off-white head that recedes fairly quickly to a thick, bubbly surface coating. Leaves some patchy lacing on the way down.

S: Surprisingly muted. Caramel, toasty malt, a light floral sweetness, maybe a little citrus, and some alcohol to round things out.

T: Starts off with a easy maltiness. Slightly sweet. A little caramel. Then it turns to the hops. Lightly floral, some light citrus, and a little herbaceousness that becomes more pronounced on the finish. Finish is slight bitter/slightly astringent.

M: Medium bodied. Lighter carbonation. Mild to moderate bitterness.

O: I've had a few of the Mikkeller Single Hop beers, but I seemd to enjoy this one a bit more than the others as this beer seemed more "tame," more evenly balanced and much less aggressive than the others, though the hop flavor was lighter than expected. Drinkabilty was good.

Pour a dark amber with a one-finger off-white head. Earthy hop and caramel malt aroma. More earthy hop notes to start. Hint of lemon zest in the beginning flavor as well. Transforms into a thick, caramel malt before a spicy, pine finish. Very dry on the palette.

From notes 7/12/11. The aroma isn’t incredible, but it seems like a good expression of the hop variety. It has a combination of pine, peppery spice and bland citrus, in that order of strength. Appearance seems a bit darker than the first round of Mikkeller single hops beers. It’s a nice orangey amber with an off-white head that sticks nicely. The taste has a nice malt backbone with some mild caramel, but it’s mostly hop notes. Good complexity - lots of tasty pine and spice flavor. Mildly bitter aftertaste. Good full feel.

Cap numbered 8201103! Served from bottle into Stone nonic. Poured yellow-orange with a one and a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, subtle fruit, caramel, and subtle citrus hop. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, caramel hop, subtle citrus, and subtle citrus hop. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. The aroma on this one was quite pleasant with the citrus notes mixed in with the slight note of sweetness in the form of caramel. The flavor did the exact opposite bringing in more sweetness than citrus which was kind of a letdown for me. Still not too bad though and definitely worth trying at least once.

Presentation: Poured into a pint glass from a bottle with a plum colored label.

A: Orange amber with a decent off-white head and moderate lacing.

S: Not as aromatic as the Mt. Hood. Mild grassy and earty tones.

T&M: Medium bodied. Smooth but much drier due to the 96 IBU rating. Taste is similar to the smell. Fades to a great hop bitterness of earth, grass and mild spiciness. Still well-balanced.

I'm sure that all of these Mikkeller's are going to be high quality. I hope so for the price. This is definitely not as tasty as the Mt. Hood, but still decent.

Served on-tap at Pizzeria Paradiso (side-by-side with Cluster Fuck) into a willibecher glass. Pours a pretty deep red. Not much head to speak of. Smell is dominated by sweet malt with notes of dark fruit. Taste is sweet with lots of dark fruit going on. I was unsure if this was indeed the beer that I ordered, but the bartender confirmed it for me. A little under-carbonated.

This is a shitty IPA and to my palate, this is not even a goddamn IPA. Lacks most qualities of style and I am insulted that Mikkeller put this beer into distribution. I have not experienced a malt-load of this degree since I stopped fellating cans of malt extract at my local homebrew store.

Mikkeller Super Galena, on tap at Shorty's, Hell's Kitchen, NYC.

Appearance: Served in a tall snifter, the Super comes with one perfect finger of white frothy head crowned by a ton of soapy bubbles. All of this doesn't last long, but it does leave a lot of lacing and bubbles behind. The beer looks very brown, opaque and malty, like maple syrup or Double Simcoe.

Smell: Crystallized sugar (sugar in the raw), shortcake, sweetness. Tea, flat coke. A tad of citrus/juiciness. Very mild bitterness.

Taste: Not as good as the smell- a tad too thin all around (or very smooth, if you prefer). Tangy, sparkly dry finish. "Mellow" hops and a malty backbone. Nice sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, flavor and carbonation. Dry, somewhat spicy at the end of the sip. Good malt-to-sweetness ratio, low but tasty hops.

Overall: A picnic premium IPA! Super sessionable and drinkable. Nothing that will shatter your world or idea of an IPA, but delicious all the same. Price ($8 per glass) would be about the only real issue here. Can't wait to try more of Mikkeller's "single hop" beers!

"Super Gelena" -- I expected this to be better than Galena but they showed me.

Beer served in a snifter at Churchkey with a bunch of others. Interesting night. Beer is reddish orange with a soft white head, thin, low retention, some lacing, low carbonation. Looks fine.

Aroma is all malt all the time, no hops at all. Some alcohol.

Beer is medium in body and really sweet, no hops at all, nothing in the finish, nothing at all. It is like a red ale at this point. Just a malty, mildly hot little red ale. Not and IPA at all...At All.

I had this at ChurchKey where they had 10+ Mikkeller single hop IPAs. It was interesting to taste the characteristics of this hop without interference from other hop types. This hop had an awful chlorinated aroma with a nice, mild woody flavour.

A: Orange color and 3 mm head that fades to good lacing. 4

S: Smelled like a chlorinated pool. Did someone urinate in there? Can I smell that too? 2

T: Woody slightly hoppy flavor. Good hoppy base. Belies the smell. 4

M: Pretty thick and reasonably carbonated. 4

O: Awful smell; nice flavour. 3.5
