A - Big pillowy white head over a pale orange body. Very extensive lacing all the way through.

S - Citrus and pine, lemon, grapefruit backed by a biscuity malt profile.

T - A harder bitterness than some of the others in single hop series, citrus peel, mandarin and caramel. Nice balance.

M - Medium body, quite dry and nicely carbonated.

O - Solid IPA. The citra seems to be quite an intense variety, not my favourite but a good one to provide some punch.

Was wondering about Citra hops. This is milder than I anticipated. Poured with a huge, billowy, foamy, frothy, fluffy, cream-colored head that lasts all the way down and plenty of lace. Color is a clear copper orange amber with lots of bubble trails. Aroma is so mild I can hardly sensey it - but ls malt, caramel, hop, citrus, hint pineapple and bare hint resin. Flavors like nose and likewise mild, fairly dry, perfectly proportionally balanced bitter and carbonic tang. Body and carbonation are spot on. Finish is like flavor, fairly short, and extremely drinkable.

Pours cloudy, honey gold on the brownish side with a slight head that leaves a fine coat of lacing.

Sweet citrus with orange and grapefruit and a background of pine as well as floral notes.

Fairly bitter, but well balanced. Quite dry, with some tea flavors. There is a background of sweetness and a modest, lingering finish.

This is a full-bodied beer with some alcohol, a wooly texture, and ample carbonation that is fairly cleansing.

Citra was enjoyed as part of a self-training exercise to distinguish differences in hop varieties. It would make a fine component to a meal.

This was sampled from a pint glass alongside the Challenger Single Hop IPA.

This was a nice surprise. I'm not a fan of grapefruit, in general, and I wouldn't have chosen it if I knew it was, however, the grapefruit/citrus taste was a perfect foil for the hops. The light cloudy yellow color doesn't make a good impression visually, b ut the smell and flavor turn it around.

This is not a drink all day beer, but it might be nice to pair with an open fire cooked meat like pork or venison.

A: The beer is copper in color and has a slight haze with a moderate to high amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige head that died down every so slowly, consistently leaving a quarter finger high head covering the surface and a webbing of lacing down the sides.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of grapefruit in the nose along with some hints of floral hops and tropical fruits.
T: Like the smell, the taste is very citrusy and flavors of grapefruit and tropical fruits stand out in particular; some hints of the underlying caramel malts are noticeable. There is a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied and relatively crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The hops really stand out in this beer and make for a complex taste (even though one variety is used) but it is easy to drink because the bitterness is not overpowering.

Golden amber in color, thick white head (you could create a sculpture with it!).

Spicy, citrusy, and sweet smell. Very banana-like...lots of other fruit-like notes (like a fruit cocktail...).

Glass-smooth mouthfeel. Light and refreshing. Strong malt taste with a refreshing light fruitiness in the background. Solid bitterness in the finish - not too light, not too strong...

Another interesting single-hop IPA from Mikkeller. There is a certain lightness overall, probably due to this hop variety, yet there is still plenty of traditional IPA malt sweetness and body with a decent enough IPA bitterness. Different but intriguingly interesting...

IPA's without dates scare me, especially overseas IPAs but this one is new in a store with decent turnover so I went for it, wish I hadn't.

Pours a very nice dirty orange color with a thick two finger white head that slowly recedes to a nice thick cap. The smell is very interesting, it reminds me of the street market in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Very sweet, with a palm sugar aroma that has a vegetal undertone, not very complex and not what I would expect from Citra hops. The taste was bitter up front and almost no flavor except for some alcohol heat. The mouthfeel was strange and flaccid. Overall I poured the second half down the drain, not worth it.

From looking at other reviews it seems as though my experience is in the minority, but if you find this beer, make sure it is fresh.

330ml bottle, the usual Danish-only label info on the label. No probs.

This beer pours a hazy dark golden colour, with two fingers of tight foamy, barely off-white head, which leaves an impressive array of complex droopy, fuzzy lace around the glass as it lazily subsides.

It smells of semi-sweet citrus hops, soft grainy malt, and a very understated alcohol edge. The taste is astringent citrus peel, more undervalued caramel graininess, and a still subtle, quiet booziness.

The bubbles are present, but not that pervasive, the body an agreeable medium weight, and generally smooth. It finishes with a melee of citrus hops and beleaguered bready, caramel malt.

Another decent single hop offering from Mikkeller - this time, the citrus comes out rather forcefully, with a lessened emphasis on the malt side of things. A bit plainly one-sided, and herbal, at times, but overall, pleasant enough to put back.

330ml bottle from the International Beer Shop, thanks to bluebetty for picking this up. Poured into a Great Divide Cervoise goblet.

Large bubbled off-white head of foam sits on top of an orange-amber coloured beer. Nice pillowy head that falls slowly and laces well.

Nice tropical fruit aroma backed with a little bit of an odd earthy smell that detracts a touch.

Tastes of grapefruit and plenty of it. Some malt backing comes in later to offset it a touch.

Decent bitterness throughout, not excessive however. Nice mredium body and easy to drink.

Mikkeller does the single hops well, not amazing, but good beers that you know will showcase the hop well and still be enjoyable.

Single hop beers are always an interesting educational experience in picking out the various characteristics of the hops variety in blended hops beers. Nice malt backbone. A touch of honey sweetness subsumed within the moderately citric hops current running throughout the beer. Finish was just a touch astringent.

A - pours an excellent honey/copper wit ha slight haze. 3 full fingers of persistent off white head

S - smells like citra hops, good start. a great deal grassier than straight citras

T - Tastes exactly like citra hop flavors. Grassy and citrusy (not so much piny) Tangerine and grapefruit flavors are predominant with the bitterness coming through early on and not lingering.

M - Everything I want in an IPA. Hits the palette hard, carbonation is prominant, then clears out fast. No coating, no thickness. Just leaves behind a citrus grove, nothing else.

O - I think the concept of these single hop IPAs is genius as far as educating on the intricacies of the character of each hop. I've always had a place in my heart for citra and figured this would offer me the best oportunity to evaluate how well they convey the hop as the heart, soul, brain, and reprodcutive system of the beer. I think they did a great job with it. I look forward to trying other hop varieties in this style.

330 ml bottle poured into a tulip
thanks to Mr Kennedy for sourcing this

A-- Poured a dark honey orange color. Quit hazy looking but a good hue to this. BIG, massive light brownish sandpaper looking head. Three fingers. Fades pretty quickly to a nice, thick collar. Good lacing left when the head recedes. Also good head retention when swirling this.

S-- Big malt backbone, followed by almost all tangerine nose. Slight notes of grapefruit peel.

T-- Carmel backbone followed by tangerine, orange marmalade, grapefruit, and pine.

M-- Low carbonation, medium body and quite oily. Bitterness is in the mid and back palate. Orange and grapefruit finish that is heavier than in the mouth.

O-- Not a bad IPA. Then again I do think Mikkeller does make good IPA's. Good balance to this and quite drinkable. Hop qualities do shine well through the backbone.

From a 330 ml brown bottle. Pours out a deep cloudy marmalade hue, tall rocky off-white head with intense retention.

Spicy leafy notes with grapefruit rind on the nose, while lemon and tangerine float in the background. Very faint grainy malt present.

Sweet cakey malt is immediately eclipsed by puckering citrus and herbal hop notes, building in intensity towards the finish with a more pith and rind character. Grapefruit rind assertively lingers on in the aftertaste.

On the fuller side of medium-bodied, slippery and full texture, with low yet still present carbonation.

A decent showcase for the Citra hop varietal, yet overall and overly lop-sided IPA. For those craving a hop fix or to check out what the Citra has to offer.

330ml bottle poured into tulip 20/2/12

A dark amber with a solid long lasting three fingers of creme colored foam that leaves lots of lace well down the glass

S toffee, citrus, some guava but then again I've been smelling guava in everything lately but tropical nonetheless

T what I smell really, tropical fruits and a little toffee, its straight forward but good

M entry is smooth and silky but then it turns to foam, nice aftertaste lingers faintly

O solid stuff but nothing to put it with the mind-blowers, good for sure and worth trying

solid stuff for sure and I can't wait to plow my way through all the new Mikkeller brews that just entered my neck of the woods

Not sure of the age on this one. Bottle cap reads 20/10/13 which is optimistic by anyone's standards.

Pours a nice colour. Orange/tangerine. Healthy head, lacing etc.

Nose is funky malt first off. Almost the hydroponics of Cantillon somehow. Pretty damn malty base beer with flashes of citrus dripping through. Certainly a nice nose but not one which is particularly IPA-esque.

Taste is very well balanced and has more of a leafy than citrus character.

Mouthfeel is medium with good carbonation. The bitterness does mount so that is good.

I mean yer, it's actually very enjoyable to drink this. But it has two drawbacks. It doesn't really showcase or isolate Citra all that well. Also it's fairly pricy. Nevertheless still recommended as it's quite delicious.

330ml bottle drank from a duvel glass

Pours clear and burnt orange with a crisp and oily large white head, excellent retention.

Passionfruit is dominate on the nose, mandarins aswell. Bananas and pineapple are also noted. Delicious.

A lot less hop character on the palate, I feel the maltiness makes the beer a little sweet. Caramel and mandarin are present, and a little more passionfruit. The finish has a light, simple bitterness.

Mouthfeel is great, light, crisp and very easy to drink. This is one of those beers that I wish I could buy by the 6pack.

This is easily the best Mikkeller single hop beer I've tried so far, very refreshing. My only qualm is that I feel it's missing some hop character on the palate, perhaps that's down the hop variety.

Working my way through the Mikkeller single hop series.

Poured into a tulip glass, this has a thick foamy head with good retention. Body is a hazy light coppery amber.

Smells subtly of tangerine over a sweet malt base with a little brown sugar.

Predominant taste is orange, which combines with the malty base beer in different ways on the palate. Nicely acidic in the front palate, tastes of slightly bitter orange peel and malt, then a bit more refined sweet orange juice mid palate, which develops into a long finish with orange zest volatiles at the end giving this a dry and bitter ending, which becomes more grapefruit rind in bitterness.

Body is medium and nicely carbonated to produce a creamy mouthfeel.

Overall, a good expression of Citra hops, but the base beer is a bit toomalty.

Bottle with the orange label (different than the picture). This one pours an interesting orange with some reddish hue to it and a one finger soapy off white head. The aromas are very citrusy with a moderate amount of sticky sweet malt. I don't think that it's as fresh as I originally thought. The flavors are pretty malty with a slight citrus hop character with a slightly dry and bitter finish. It is what it is. It drinks light and the flavors aren't bad, just not awe inspiring. This is pretty similar to the rest of their single hop series, superior hop varietal or not.

Served on tap in an over sized wine glass.

The beer pours dark dark orange with a nice one finger head. Smells of citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruit with a dry breaddy malt backbone. This beer has a nice full feel to it, far from watered down but still rather drinkable. It is very citrus oriented, Mostly grapefruit and some astringency. The beer is quite bitter but its a rather malt heavy IPA. Its not the thin feeling hop heavy IPA that I am used to but it is a welcome change of pace.

Overall, this is a good IPA, my first from Mikkeller, I hope to see their other offering around.

This was a nice gift with a $6.49 price tag attached to the 11.2 oz bottle. This bad boy was served up in a New Holland Tulip glass.

A- Maybe my pour had a lil too much thrust, but thsi beer exhibited a two inch thick head that floated above the lips of the glass for a while. Color was off orange, a lil' dirty.

S- Sweet grapefruit and citusy (sp) goodness.
T- Cirtrus without hints of pine. Definitey not that hoppy (to my standards anyway)
M- Leave a nice lingering carbonation with some biteterness that resembles a not too tart grapefruit.
O- Definitely would have again, more likely drink it if I wanted to splurge on a hop specific IPA. A great beer that was a nice treat to have, but due to the price, I have to give it a lower rating.

A - pours a deep, hazy orange with a rich, lathery head that puffed up quite a bit but settled to a thick cap; lots of lacing left on glass

S - some light malt right away which makes me think this is not super fresh; citrus blossom, lemon peel, bee pollen

T - tastes fresher than aroma though i had no beef at all with either; mild taste overall with lots of hop flavor but not overwhelming with floral or bitter elements; clean taste with bittering finish

M - crisp, neat presentation overall; light-med body with light, active carbonation that is slightly prickly

D - pretty delicious; I would love to have one fresh off the line to compare but had no problems as-is; would love to session this one!

Wanted to get to know this hop.

It pours like any of the other of this series.

The smell does bring notes of lemongrass, lemon curd, lemon gum drops, and some lime zest. The beer is obviously maltier now than fresh but you can get the gist of the hop.

The flavor is definitely still bitter. This hop is a milder one imo. Very much cirtus rindy. Definitely not something that I think is a good one for single hopping but for bitterness and citrusness along with a more torpical one for most of the flavor.

Not bad.

Notes from several weeks ago; picked up a bottle of this over in NY State. I had heard about this single hop series and someone recommended the Citra to me over the other options. Which with the cost of them, I appreciated a recommendation.
Appearance is a nice orange tone, kinda hazy. Its` nose has lemon peel, grapefruit, pine, floral notes including a bit of canibus. The nose is really something, a lot of flavors going on. For the taste, I came across citrus, grass, bread, hops. MF is medium with a bitter finish. This was a very good beer, happy with the purchase, albeit a pricey one.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a puffy, pillowy white head.

S: Aromas of lemon, grapefruit, lime, and orange are balanced by delicate caramel and biscuit scents.

T: Fruity, tart, and intense with notes of bitter orange, lemon, kumquat, lime, grapefruit, pine sap, caramel, and biscuits. The finish is fruity and bitter with a delicate balance of citrus and caramel flavors.

M: Medium bodied and dry. Carbonation is present, but is not overly forceful.

O: This is one of the better ales in Mikkeller's Single Hop Series. The intense flavors of this particular varietal are adequately showcased, though I feel that the brewers have done a far better job of showcasing this hop's aromas. All in all, this is a solid American-style IPA that is worth a try.
