look: 3 | smell: 1.5 | taste: 4 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

A: Dark Brown-orange opaque and hazy body. The beer pours with a yellowish-white head, tiny bubbles and decent head retention. Should be less hazy with better retention.

S: Extremely faint nose with some discernible caramel and citrus notes.

F: A nice amount of bittery hoppiness hits the palette first with some nice pine and citrus notes backed up by light malt and alcohol.

M: The beer rolls on the palette with medium body and a carbonation that compliments the hoppy character

Overall this is a good IPA but nothing too amazing.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Purchased at Five Points Bottle Shop in the Classic City of Athens, GA.

Appearance 4.25: Poured out a lovely, golden brown. Decent 1/2" head and good lacing. What really put it over the top for me, however, was the particulates floating around. Lots of little hops bits and who-knows-what. So lovely.

Smell 4.0: Very nice bouquet. Smell of sharp, acidic hops mixed with a very strong malt scent. Very promising.

Taste 3.75: Front is malty and somewhat dry. Middle is big and malty; this is a sharp malt flavor and also very biscuit-like. Large hit of big malt in the middle of the palate at this level along with a sharp, bitter and dry hit of hops in the front of the mouth. Interesting balance. Finish is silky-smooth, with a pleasant caramel taste and a dry mouthfeel at the end. Aftertaste is short, but nice with a final focus on the alkaline hops. Taste is good, but it is like a chimera: a lot of these taste-levels just do not match up with each other.

Mouthfeel 3.75: Good and smooth conditioning level; good representative of this type of brew.

Overall 3.75: A mixed bag. Great appearance, great bouquet, but kind of a let down in the taste department. The label states that they brewed one big batch of wort and then seasoned different little batches with different hops. That may be why this beer is off on several levels: the wort wasn't tailored to the specific hop. This beer is good, but in my opinion, a much better representative of the Columbus hop can be found in Asheville Brewing's Shiva IPA.

11.2 oz bottle with no bottled on date

A - Murky amber, with 1 finger of head and sticky lace left all over the glass

S - Balanced...malty and hoppy. Nothing jumps out, but it smells good. Smells like a red ale honestly

T - Wow...different than the others. Well balanced. Does not lean to the citrus or bitter side. Surprised at the 114 ibu's. Wow...malts must balance it out

M - Medium bodied, well carbonated

O - A great brew. I love the columbus hop...well balanced and smooth

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My last bottle from my recent Mikkeller Single Hop series stash. My bottle lists a 6.80% abv, rather than the 6.90% abv listed on BeerAdvocate. Looking forward to this one, considering my positive experiences with the rest (except for the Mikkeller Citra most recently).

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours about three fingers of fluffy creamy khaki head on top of a dark burnt sienna orange colored body. Some yeast sediment visible. Nice thin fluffy ribbons of lacing on the glass.

S - Smell is more subdued than many of the others, but still carries a lot of the same smells. Sweet bready caramel malts, some tea leaves, some grapefruit, pine, vanilla, earthy wood character.

T - Taste is more subdued than a lot of the others also. Some sweet green apple, earth, caramel malt. Very bready. Very bitter, with the most theoretical IBUs out of the lot of these I bought (114 IBU).

M - Feel is creamy, with a bit of coarse bitterness, and dry and bready on the finish. Some lingering green apple skin & twiggy earth.

Overall, not as good as some of the other lesser known varieties of hops were, which is surprising. Still, glad to have gotten a hold of it at least once, especially at the low price I got it at, $1.75 per bottle. Worth a try, but a lot of the same.

Mikkeller Columbus ---4/5.

Not really fair to review a closeout from my favorite bottle shop, however for those who turn their nose up at IPA's more than a few months 'fresh' I offer this.
Beautiful looking beer if you can overlook the floating yeast in the glass. Head is about 1 inch off white , very persistent subsides to about 1/2 inch with nice lacing. Color is dark amber, cloudy with lots of tiny bubbles.
Nose is toffee, nutty like with yeast notes not found this side of the Atlantic. Interesting.
Hops fragrance not strong at all, likely the age affected this.
Taste is malt forward on the front and some citrus, grapefruit bite in the middle to ending. This has nice bitterness ( bottle says 'theoretical IBU=104) . Its not overpowering for an IPA enthusiast.
Mouth- seemed alright, about light-medium with good carbonation.
Overall a decent IPA that may improve with freshness. At $1.99, marked down from $6.49 for the 330ml bottle, I would buy again . I wouldn't pick this up for $6.49.
I've got a single hop ( MT Hood) to try next.
