There are way too many of these beers. No, that's a lie. I actually love that every time I see a display filled with them there are still entries in the series I've not tried. This is the standard 330ml bottle, purchased from Slowbeer in Melbourne.

Pours a slightly hazy deep orange, with reddish hints when held to the light. Head forms a solid froth of off-white, but settles out the a ring with some pocked islands of foam across the top. fine body and powdery carbonation when tilted. Looks pretty decent.

Nose is soft with a bleary hoppiness that gives off a slight vegetative sweetness mingled with a surprising dose of maltiness—more malt indeed than I've noticed in some of the others in the series. The aroma is very smooth, giving a slight sweet herb character with some floral overtones. Despite this, it doesn't actually release much in the way of sharp resin or oil. It's decent though.

Taste is similar: soft bitterness only, giving herbal, almost noble overtones and a faint organic buzz on the tongue. That classic Mikkeller nuttiness comes through (I'm yet to have a beer in this series that I haven't noticed the nut character in), along with a slightly abbreviated hop bitterness towards the back of the palate. Finish empties out pretty quickly, leaving behind just a slight froth from the carbonation. Hmm.

Overall, this is decent enough, but I think definitely one of the weakest I've had, if not the weakest: it's just very generic in its flavours, and I don't feel like I'm now well acquainted with Magnum either. A space-filler in the series and no more for me.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My sixth beer of the Mikkeller Single Hop series. Not entirely too familiar with magnum hops, but I know I've had them in beers before. Expectations are high, based on how well I've enjoyed the others.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours two fingers of creamy sudsy beige head. Body color is a beautiful burnt sienna orange with plenty of dark peices of yeast sediment floating to the bottom. Not as dark as some of the others that I've seen, but similar to most of the others. Nice delicate lacing.

S - Smell is more subdued than a lot of the others. The magnum hops lend a bit of pine and some earthiness, with bready caramel malts and some booze lingering in the background.

T - A bit different than a lot of the others. Piney, earthy, and bitter from the magnum hops with some green apple skin sweetness, and bready caramel malts to round things off. Coppery and metallic in the finish.

M - Feel is much more resinous and bitter than any of the others that I've had up to this point. Some sweet green apple skin, and copper lingering on the palate.

Overall, while I enjoyed it, this was probably my least favorite of the Mikkeller Single Hop series up to now. Definitely a distinctive flavor from the magnum hops, and some pleasant welcome bitterness, just not nearly as smooth & creamy as others have been, with a metallic edge to it. Looking forward to the others.

Mikkeller Magnum ---4/5.

On tap at the House of Brews, Jensen. Served in a pint glass.

Appearance - Hazy deep orange. Big off white head. Thick collar and a few islands.

Smell - Apple-y and earthy. Weird hop profile. Strong toasty and deep caramelcaramelalt.

Taste - Again with the apples. Earthy and fruity. Slightly tangy. Toasty malt. Bitter.

Mouthfeel - Medium body, pushing medium heavy. Dry and a little musty.

Overall - Weird hop, but surprisingly enjoyable. Took me a while to get used to it.

Mikkeller's march through the single hop series lands at the intensely resinous, but often times harsh bitterness of Magnum hops. Balancing malts support the hops but never interfere with the hoppy onslaught.

As with all of the Single Hopped IPAs in the series, Magnum pours with a hazy honey-amber appearance. Topped with a sheet of off white foam, the head retains remarkably and laces with broken rings around the glass. It's a nice looking beer, even if a bit dark.

The Mangnum hops arrive with merely a balanced aroma of pine cones, grass, and citrus. Boldly earthen, the hops remind me of freshly shaven woods, fresh mowed lawns, and bailed hay. Caramel, toast, and bread dough provide the balance to the somewhat reserved hops.

Flavors of the malt coax the palate with its foundation of bread, toast, and dry caramel. But then come the hoppy taste of wood, grass, and pithy white grapefruit flesh. The earthy and citrus flavors slowly grow in to an intensely bitter taste that dominates the dry finish. This becomes one seriously bitter beer.

Medium bodied, but dense for an IPA. Its weight attempts to balance the beer instead of instead of scumming to the hops. But as the malt timidly wavers, the woody dryness of hops offers medium astringency that emerges from the bitterness and aids the alcohol in warmth and dryness.

After the middle palate, the Magnum hops command the beer better than nearly any that I've had in the Single Hop Series. It takes this demonstrative hop to stand out to this extent above the sturdy malt backdrop. Still the rawness of the Magnum hop exposes the rough edges of this beta-heavy hop variety.
