We hear brewers tell us that this beer is "this" because of "so-and-so" hops, but rarely do we have a chance to gain appreciation for those hops because there's a lot of stuff going on with the beer; whether it be additional hop varieties, esters, spices, or malt complexities. This Tettnanger version sells what's best about the noble hops of Germany.

With a very un-IPA-like dark amber hue, the beer takes on redish brown coloration of heavy rust. A firm haze, tremendous head formation of eggshell white foam, sturdy retention, and lacy rings all certainly sings the praises of well-made IPAs though.

Spicy-sweet aromas spring from the glass with aromas of dried wood, stems, leaf, bark, and earth- a nearly minty sassafras note comes through and reminds me a bit of gin or white wine. It carries a scent of pumpernickel bread. Backed by the toasted malty sweetness of toffee and shortbread, the base malts nearly cover up the tettnanger scent.

Flavors strike the palate in reverse. First, the malty rich taste of toffee sweetness with toast and starch brings a rich base from which the hops spring. But then up with broad bitterness of dried woods, tea leaves, and rye, the beer begins to balance out very well. Finishing with a spicier peppercorn note, the minty elements weave into alcohol taste for a very refreshing closure to its taste.

Where the tettnanger hop variety delivers high flavor and aroma character with a smooth and broad bitterness, similar to English noble hops, I can see where and why this variety is often paired with other hop species like saaz and hallertau for roundness, complexity, and fuller taste. It would greatly help if Mikkeller could back off of the malt richness, making the beer drier and allowing the hops to showcase all of their special attributes in fuller glory. I feel that the rich base beer covers up the more delicate features of many of the hops being celebrated.

Bottled on 6/31/13 so it's got some age on it but that's Total wine for ya.Pours into a standard pint glass a somewhat murky amber color with a half finger off white head that settled pretty slowly.Aromas of the leafy Tettnanger hops and some light sweet bread dough. The mouthfeel is a little prickly and about medium.Flavors of caramel and dough upfront with leafy somewhat herbal hop notes in the finish. Not bad but nothing that blows you away, again this had some age on it so it might have been better if more fresh.
