Wow, one of the best examples ot a Tettnang beers I've ever had. That's unusual for me as it's usually one of my least fav hops. Poured with an enormous frothy, fluffy, sudsy, foamy, airy, off white head and lots of lace. Color is a clear medium amber with some bubble trails. Flavor is, to me, surprisingly balanced and on the mild side. Plenty of malt and, of course, the Tettnang to stand up to it. Plenty of bitterness, but not in extreme, not a lot of fruit, only hints (not a fan of the overly fruity hops) and some caramel, malt, chewy malt, a little toffee, bread dough, and cookies. Body is perfect for style and same for carbonation. Finish is like flavor and easy while tapering to a moderate length. Really good. too pricey for session but certainly of exceeding quality.

Served on tap in a tasting glass at Bangers & Lace. Tettnanger, Palisade, Cascade, Galena, Super Galena, and Simcoe were all tasted side by side.

Appearance The appearance of the single hop series does not really vary from beer to beer. Each one is a golden caramel color with a fluffy whit ehead that displays good retention and leaves a web of lace down the glass.

Smell: A light pale malt sweetness showcases the floral aroma. I am reminded of walking through a flowery field. Just a touch of bitterness is noticeable.

Taste: The flavor starts with a soft honey-like sweetness and a light grainy malt. Sweet crushed lavender brings a soft bitterness with it. Toward the end more honey and a bit of caramel sweetness come out as well.

Mouthfeel: The feel is clean and crisp. The focus is clearly on creating a stable malt base with middle of the road carbonation and body to showcase the difference in the hops.

Overall: I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. It is very nice and delicate, with a floral aroma and flavor I do not find in too many beers.

quite possibly my favorite of the single hop series, now that ive tried all but a few of them. this one has a lot more interesting qualities than I expected from this variety. its got the same familiar orangey hazy pour with the usual yeasty off white head that sticks around. the nose though is a lot different. the hops power right through the yeast where others did not. there is a nice fruity trail mix sort of nutty aroma to this, very outdoorsy in some way. the flavor has a ton of fruit from the hops, like melon and grapefruit, I really like it. I didn't expect so much of that fruit to come from the tettnanger hop, but it really does. the malts and yeast play a nice supporting role here, its beefy like all of the beers in this series. this is one I wish was made all the time and came in cheap 6ers, because id be all over it. super easy drinking, that fruit really seems to lighten up the feel, and the carbonation is robust to say the least. overall im glad I worked my way through this series for this beer alone, its a real discovery, and has inspired me to get going with this variety in my next homebrew. lovely stuff.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. I get a lot of biscuit malt and grass in the aroma, as well as a little bit of orange citrus.

The flavor is similar. There is a lot of grass and orange citrus in the flavor, as well as some biscuit malt which keeps the bitterness from being too high.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

Picked up all 19 of the Mikkeller Single Hop Series beers at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Slightly cloudy pour with two finger head with good retention and lacing. Very interesting and unique floral, perfumey nose. The taste mirrors the smell with a nice mild floral hop character that nicely complements the sweet malt base. Hints of pepper, pine and tea play nicely with the caramel malt. This is definitely more of a pale ale than an IPA. The mouthfeel is really nice and drinkable with a slightly oily finish with just a touch of bitterness. This was my first conscious exposure with Tettnanger hops. I'm thinking it won't be my last. Probably a stretch to call this an IPA, but very nice anyway.

I went to Rattle N Hum in Midtown Manhattan and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they were running a Mikkeller special featuring a number single hop ipa's I have loved these beers when I've had, i believe, all of them at one time or another in bottles. On draft, in a flight of multiple single hops, comparing them side by side demonstrates why some hops are better for bitterness and others for aroma and flavor. At this event, there were a number of british and european hops which made it all the more interesting. I recently had a flight of Tettnanger, Cluster, Soriachi Ace and Bravo.

Tettnanger: This one was a little less like and IPA than a Pale Ale. Very interesting aroma and a bit on the sweet side but overall very good.

Cluster: Again, not so much an IPA as it should be but also very good. A bit bready on the aroma and flavor. Some bitterness that is a little more on the piney side than the fruity side.

Soriachi Ace: I think the best of the bunch and a little more like an IPA than the rest (more like the earlier single hop versions released by Mikkeller). Good citrus and pine aroma and good bitterness on the flavor.

Bravo: The Bravo was the least ipa like of the bunch although not a bad beer. Nice balance, nice aroma and nice flavor...just not what you expect when you ask for an IPA.

Any of these is worthing getting if you see them in bottles or on tap.

Pink label. I like this hop, want to see what it is like alone. I suspect it will be a foul representation though.

It pours a cloudy amber with a foamy off-white head.

The smell isn't bad, I think it represents the hop decently. It has some nice herbal notes, orange, and some light malt.

The flavor isn't bad either. I was worried he would misuse the noble hop like many others but it doesn't have that over-concentrated flavor.

I am surprised, he really captured the hop well, one of my favorites. Now he just needs to make a Spalt one. Or just make a single hop Spalt pils in the south German style, that would be sick.

Poured from a bottle into a Dogfish snifter

A- pours a really cloudy shade of dark orange with a very puffy one finger light tan head. Looks pretty ugly, actually...but then again, most of the Mikkeller single hops do

S- spicy aroma, with some sweet citrus invading as well....pretty nice

T- really fresh tasting....nice citrus bite. Very crisp. A tad bit of bitterness in the finish

M- medium bodied. Not syrupy. Very good

O- not bad at all. I've had Victory's Tettnag Pils, and enjoyed that, and this was just as good.

This one is cloudier and darker than the norm, with some suspended sediment.

Nicely aromatic and spice notes.

There are some tropical notes like guava, earthiness, and tea. A little bitterness in the finish but has a fruity acidity throughout.

Body is medium, and carbonation is fizzy.

The tettnanger tastes unique seems to be expressed well in this beer.

This is definitely more of an American Pale than an IPA, but we'll try to refrain from making too many judgments on this front. I'm not sure if the bottle says that it's an IPA, I thought it just said single hop but I could certainly be wrong. It doesn't say anything on the glass when it's on tap. It's just beer. That's weird. Big sexy creamy head atop a somewhat hazy orange pour. Head fades to a small ring with some little dotted stain. I connected the dots and it appears to be Mikkel lying down holding a stein of beer. Not surprised.
Floral and malty aroma, a little bit of the alcohol hanging out. Very nice for a pale, a little weak for an IPA, but overall it's a pleasant aroma. A faded backdrop of pepper.
Slightly sweet, a boozy sting coupled with some pine and flowers. Finishes crisp with the ethanol.
Overall, I find this an excellent pale ale and a pretty good IPA. I know the IBU's are on the low side, but the Tettnang is a beautiful hop and it's showcased very well here dancing alongside the malt and booze. I think it's a well-crafted beer, but I do like IPAs all over the IBU spectrum. Elysian's Immortal is one for example that has only slightly more IBU's than this and it's a personal favorite.
Only the 2nd from the new series that I've tried and it kicked the Centennial's ass, although I fear that bottle was a bit infected.

A: The beer is very hazy amber in color and has some small yeast particles visible floating in suspension along with a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a finger and a half high dense off white head that has excellent retention properties, consistently leaving a head covering the surface and lots of bubbles coating the sides of the glass.
S: There are aromas of caramel malts in the nose along with some hints of floral hops.
T: Like the smell, the taste has flavors of caramel malts along with notes of floral hops and hints of herbs towards the finish. The hops also contribute a light to moderate amount of bitterness.
M: It feels medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be one of the most malt-forward beers of Mikkeller’s single hop series. The Tettnanger hops aren’t that well suited for an IPA, but it is interesting to see how they compare to those used in the other IPAs in the series.

This is a pretty easy drinking IPA, even though it's a bit hearty and earthy overall. The hops really seem to impart a rigid oily thing that meshes with the pine and deep citrus tones into one glob of character (as many of these single hop IPAs seem to do). Overall, this is not too shabby.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a thick, pillowy beige head.

S: Aromas of lemon, lime zest, sweet orange, herbs, and wildlfower honey are present on the nose.

T: Notes of honey, lemon, lime zest, sweet orange, sage, mint, minerals, and kumquat are supported by a biscuity malt base. The finish is mellow and short with orange, honey, and lime flavors.

M: Medium-bodied, firm, and dry. Carbonation is crisp. Very refreshing.

O: Tettnanger is far from the first varietal I think of when I think IPA, but this beer proves to me that the hop could be used to brew this style. Compared to other American-style IPAs, Tettnanger Single Hop IPA is light, straight-forward, and tremendously refreshing, but is just bitter enough to qualify as a real IPA. An excellent, unorthodox showcase of a hop varietal generally associated with German lagers.
