Mikkeller Cluster Single Hop IPA

330ml bottle with no date, consumed 6/17/14, 6.8%, served in shaker pint.

Very foamy. Cloudy dark orange with some sediment.

Clean grassy smell with some light caramel malt.

More grass in the taste. Some initially sharp bitterness on the back end. Slight dry pine taste. Feels more English than American as an IPA so far. Serious head retention with lacing that's Guinness-esque. Any fruit that's in the taste is leaning toward mild citrus. Overall the flavor was okay, not too bitter.

I picked this up as a curiosity to fill the last spot in a mixed 6 and then only because it was marked down by half. With no idea how old this is I'm afraid it's not of great use to judge the characteristics of Cluster hops. Ended up just being a decent English tasting IPA to me.

Bottle: Poured a dirty cloudy amber color ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dusty dank hops with leafy notes and some biscuit malt notes. Taste is dominated by dank musty hoppy notes withleafy notes and some biscuit malt. Body is full with good carbonation. Another one where I do have to ask why do retailer keep overpriced IPA which don’t move with no freaking bottling date.

Think I've got another single hop past prime. Served with a large, foamy, frothy, cream-colored-to-light tan, long lasting head and plenty of lace. Color is a hazy/cloudy dark amber. Aroma is stale hop, malt, caramel, oak. Flavor's like nose, stale hop bitter up front , fairly dry, then carbonic tang. Body/carbonation are perfect. Finish is like flavor, long, hint of alcohol. I believe these single hop beers really need to be somewhat fresh.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. My fifth beer from the Mikkeller Single Hop series. 6.80% abv listed on the bottle, rather than 6.90%. I have been generally impressed with these beers, so my expectations are high.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours three big fingers of creamy fluffy foamy beige head. Body color is probably the darkest of the five I've had so far. A dark orange-ruby-chestnut brown color. Lots of yeast sediment floating at the bottom. Big thick fluffy sheets of lace.

S - Smell is earthy, woody, creamy, with lots of caramelized malts and some vanilla. Smells truly fantastic.

T - Taste is of creamy caramelized malt goodness, twiggy earthy herbal qualities, some booze heat, and some oak / barrel character. There is a distinctiveness here that I can only describe as leafy and somewhat minty.

M - Creamy, smooth, perfect carbonation. Feel ends sticky, sugary, and dry. Hint of green apple skin sweetness leftover on the palate.

Overall, definitely one of my favorites from the Mikkeller Single Hop series so far, but I think I've been saying that about most of them. A nice showcase for the cluster hops; although the malts and yeast has a lot to do with how great these beers are also.
