Served on-tap at Pizzeria Paradiso (side-by-side with Super Galena) into a willibecher glass. Pours pretty much red with an orangish hue. Not much head to speak of. Looks fine or average at best. Smell is dominated by sweet malt with just a flutter of hops. Taste is sweet with just a hint of bitterness and some mild citrus. A little under-carbonated, but not bad.

I must say that I preferred this to Super Galena, but this is a poor IPA. Mikkeller has some great style when it comes to packaging and I respect the single hop series (as well as the fact that they brew a vast catalog of beers), but for fuck's sake, brew a decent IPA. If I brewed this and served it, I'd be damned embarrassed. Pass on this if your looking for something hoppy.

Presentation: Poured into a pint glass.

A: Orange amber color. Nice thick and fluffy off-white, almost tan, head. Heavy lacing.

S: Dishwater? Really, rancid oil and soggy wet grain that has a bit a a spoiled smell.

T&M: Medium bodied. Smooth and tastier than the smell. Some mild citrus and pine notes with a mild to moderate bitterness from the hops.

This is definitely the hop that is probably my "least" favorite. If all of these Mikkeller IPA's are identical with the exception of "hops", I now know what this odd nose is on many of the beers that I hate. Wet dishrags, mops, or spoiled grains? I can't put my finger on it, but not good at all. I'll steer clear in the future.

Bottle: Poured a dirty cloudy amber color ale with a large light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of dusty dank hops with leafy notes and some biscuit malt notes. Taste is dominated by dank musty hoppy notes withleafy notes and some biscuit malt. Body is full with good carbonation. Another one where I do have to ask why do retailer keep overpriced IPA which don’t move with no freaking bottling date.

11.2oz bottle alongside Bravo and Sorachi Ace versions.

Pour is very similar on all 3 with a clear orange body with uniform off-white heads. Lots of bubbles streaming from the bottom.

Aroma is the least hoppy of the three with the bready malts and caramel coming through more than the hops. What hops are in here are floral but faint.

Taste is sweet malts and maybe a little more hops. There is definitely a more bitter kick in the finish than I was expecting though it's more metallic than hoppy.

The mouthfeel is consistent across the three with strong carbonation and a medium to light body.

This is my least favorite of the three in front of me and Cluster is a hop that can't carry an IPA on its own, at least from the evidence here. Average.

A: dark copper colour, relative pale but dense head, nice haze

S: classic ipa smell, bread, hint of caramelized apple, malts

T: rather sweet for an ipa, not a lot of bitterness, once again apple and caramel and even some chocolate,

M: on the thin side, undercarbonated, not a lot of alcohol

O; not a big fan, too sweet, not balanced, not an IPA

Beer on draft with 18 other single hop IPAs at Churchkey. This year's versions were all hopped with the same AMOUNT of hops rather than last year that were all hopped to the same IBU. The result being drastically different beers. This one, Cluster, was hopped to 65 IBUs. Served in a snifter.

Beer is reddish / orange and clear with a thin white head, some minimal lacing and low carbonation. They all look pretty much the same with a few exceptions with the heads.

Aroma on this one is really weak, mildly fruity, mildly floral.

Beer is sweet with a twinge of alcohol in the front and mild hop flavor, the bitterness is pretty low on the finish. I don't think I would have assumed this was an IPA if drinking it blindly. Compared to the others this one has a more candy like fruitiness to it. Eh, not my favorite of the 20.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a pillowy white head.

S: Aromas of grassy, herbal hops and caramel are most noticeable on the nose. Compared to some of the other beers in this series, this one smells very bland.

T: Notes of grass, herbs, lemon, caramel, and biscuits are easily noticed. The finish is very mild and rather short with grass and biscuit flavors mingling.

M: Medium bodied, firm, and initially somewhat sticky, though it mellows and dries out nicely on the finish. This is probably the lightest and most drinkable of Mikkeller's single hop experiments.

O: I'm not digging this IPA as much as the others. It just doesn't seem to have all that much flavor, and the little bit that is there is so muddled that it is difficult to get a feel for at first. This really does not taste much like an IPA to me.

Mikkeller Cluster Single Hop IPA

330ml bottle with no date, consumed 6/17/14, 6.8%, served in shaker pint.

Very foamy. Cloudy dark orange with some sediment.

Clean grassy smell with some light caramel malt.

More grass in the taste. Some initially sharp bitterness on the back end. Slight dry pine taste. Feels more English than American as an IPA so far. Serious head retention with lacing that's Guinness-esque. Any fruit that's in the taste is leaning toward mild citrus. Overall the flavor was okay, not too bitter.

I picked this up as a curiosity to fill the last spot in a mixed 6 and then only because it was marked down by half. With no idea how old this is I'm afraid it's not of great use to judge the characteristics of Cluster hops. Ended up just being a decent English tasting IPA to me.

Bottle from Premier Gourmet. Poured in to Duvel tulip.

A - Medium amber colour, very slightly translucent, with 2 fingers of bubbly khaki coloured head.

S - An off nose of lemon, floral notes and a slightly sour smell. Despite the sour smell the nose is still somewhat intriguing.

T - A decent hop bitterness complimented by some pepper/spicy notes and some distinct floral notes from the hops. A very slight lemon flavour is also present. The malt backbone is barely noticeable providing the slightest amount of sweetness to balance the hops.

M - Medium body, light to moderate carbonation.

Another of the soggy hopped beers in Mikkeller's single hopped series. (Really. This is getting bland and boring. And...a waste of $$$.) Everything is just jumbled together on this one, like the others that were not so impressive from the line. Eh. I don't really want to go on. It's a boring beer that doesn't really say anything when I'm hoping to learn or see something about the Cluster hop. I'll call this a fail. Getting bored with this series.

Think I've got another single hop past prime. Served with a large, foamy, frothy, cream-colored-to-light tan, long lasting head and plenty of lace. Color is a hazy/cloudy dark amber. Aroma is stale hop, malt, caramel, oak. Flavor's like nose, stale hop bitter up front , fairly dry, then carbonic tang. Body/carbonation are perfect. Finish is like flavor, long, hint of alcohol. I believe these single hop beers really need to be somewhat fresh.

Reviewed from session notes.

Poured out a hazy brownish amber with a single finger of sturdy creamy tan foam, medium-high amounts of lacing drapery on the glass.

Smells half woody and half herbal, perhaps some tea leaves as well. Gains a faint citrus peel / pulp accent as it warms up. Very understated nose.

Tastes again like a mix of woody and herbal notes but also has a lighter amount of earth and spice, almost like a noble hop sort of thing going on in the background. Very "aspirin" sort of dry chalky bitterness.

Somewhat lighter in body and carbonation than the other single hop series in the session so far.

I went to Rattle N Hum in Midtown Manhattan and was pleasantly surprised to learn that they were running a Mikkeller special featuring a number single hop ipa's I have loved these beers when I've had, i believe, all of them at one time or another in bottles. On draft, in a flight of multiple single hops, comparing them side by side demonstrates why some hops are better for bitterness and others for aroma and flavor. At this event, there were a number of british and european hops which made it all the more interesting. I recently had a flight of Tettnanger, Cluster, Soriachi Ace and Bravo.

Tettnanger: This one was a little less like and IPA than a Pale Ale. Very interesting aroma and a bit on the sweet side but overall very good.

Cluster: Again, not so much an IPA as it should be but also very good. A bit bready on the aroma and flavor. Some bitterness that is a little more on the piney side than the fruity side.

Soriachi Ace: I think the best of the bunch and a little more like an IPA than the rest (more like the earlier single hop versions released by Mikkeller). Good citrus and pine aroma and good bitterness on the flavor.

Bravo: The Bravo was the least ipa like of the bunch although not a bad beer. Nice balance, nice aroma and nice flavor...just not what you expect when you ask for an IPA.

Any of these is worthing getting if you see them in bottles or on tap.
