My 1st taste of the Mikkeller single hop series

A - Darkish, brown sugar appearance with a bit of peach hue. Finger and a half of head that sticks with the beer all the way down. Sticky lace everywhere. Lots of floating sediment. As good of an appearance in a beer as I can ever ask for..

S - Nice and hoppy

T - Hoppy, nice malt backbone, and well balanced. Not a very bittering hop. Well balanced citrus and bitter hop. Very good

M - Full bodied and well carbonated. Damn good mouthfeel.

O - It seems to have been aged a bit, I don't know..there is no bottled on date. But has almost turned into an old ale, which I love. A nice door into the Palisade hop, and a damn good beer

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is
full of caramel and orange citrus notes, as well as some sweet candy notes. The flavor is similar. The two dominant flavors are orange and biscuit malt, with some light perfume notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a slightly hazy copper color with an off-white head leaving decent lacing.

Smells of grainy pale malts with good amounts of soft tropical fruit hops. Also present are hints of floral hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Mildly dry pale malts up front are joined quickly by light citrus and slight tropical fruit hops. The tropical fruit flavors fade midway through, allowing the citrus and pale malts to carry through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with solid carbonation.

Overall this was one of the better versions in the second batch of the single hop series, an interesting and non-overpowering hop. Worth a shot.

A nice drinking IPA. The hop exudes a somewhat rich citrus taste, and is pleasant without harshness at all, aided by understated soft carbonation. Pleasant aroma. Hazy orange bodied with some white soapy head. Not big but smooth.IBU 47.Good slightly sweet malting.

Cap numbered 8241103! Served from bottle into Stone nonic. Poured yellow-orange with a three finger off-white head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, earth, earth hop, and subtle fruit. The flavor was of sweet malt, fruit, fruit hop, and slight grain. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Ovearll this was a decent brew. This was one of the more earthy charactered brews in the series for sure in both the aroma and flavor. The grain aspect I got in the flavor was quite surprising for an IPA. However, the fruit there salvaged this fact though. Worth trying for something different though on the nose.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. This beer is definitely not fresh though, and I regret sitting on buying this beer for so long. But alas, here I have it. Another in the Mikkeller Single Hop series. Expectations are decent, since I had good results with many of the others.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours about a finger and a half of frothy khaki foam. Body is a brown hued burnt sienna orange with lots of fine dark sediment twirling around the glass. Looks nice.

S - The smell returns me to what I really like about these beers. Lots of complexity for an IPA, especially at an old age. Earthy grassy hops, sweet malt, champagne like yeast presence, some funkiness, damp wood.

T - Taste follows the nose: sweet creamy caramelized malts, earthy bitter hops, green apples, some coppery mineral taste, & some dry chalky yeast presence. I feel like there is also some herbal spice rack note in there that I can't identify.

M - Feel ends sticky, bitter, and dry. Green apple and caramel malt on the aftertaste. Easy drinking with good carbonation.

Overall, it wasn't quite as amazing as some of the others were, but I guess I can't blame it since it's my fault for not buying it sooner. Definitely a nice showcase for this unique variety of hop. Definitely recommended if this beer is still available to you.

Picked up all 19 of the Mikkeller Single Hop Series beers at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Clear copper-amber pour with quickly fading two finger head with minimal lacing. Nose is a bit musty and earthy, but also a bit floral and perfumey. The malt is definitely dominant. With that said, the herbal hops emerge a bit more in the taste. Hints of tea and caramel complement the perfumey, bitter hops with a touch of alcohol emerging as well. The mouthfeel is crisp with solid carbonation and a nice mildly bitter finish. Like the Tettnanger, this is more of a pale ale than an IPA, but solid nonetheless.

A-Pours out a dark bronze with a 2 finger crown of slowly dying, light tan foam that left thin, spotty lacing during it's descent.

S-Odd for an IPA but in a good way.Dried cherry, tangerine, almond and grassy hops.

T-Ripe fruit, mostly peach and sour cherry, with some mild grapefruit/citrus and earthy hops.

M-Medium bodied with a clean composition overall, good flavor complexity and a nice hop tingle.

O-One of my favorite in this series.

On tap at Max's.

The beer pours a copper amber color with fairly good head retention and decent lacing. Do not get much on the nose.... some orange coolaide and a hint of earthiness. The flavor profile is a bit better than that, showing a decent amount of orange citrus, cherry, and some earthiness. In combination, this is pretty nice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, somewhat sweet and fruity finish. Alcohol is pretty well integrated into the flavor, and have to say this is one of the better single hop IPA's I've had from Mikkeller (of course that's not saying much).

Note to self.... stop ordering these generally mediocre beers from Mikkeller. This is one of the better ones, but on average, most are way overpriced for what you get (a middle of the road, nothing special IPA).

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had an amber color and a hazy consistency. There was an inch of creamy, long-lasting head. Pretty good lacing.

S: A somewhat fruity smell, with a bit of hops thrown in as well.

T: Tasted of citrus (orange, grapefruit), hops and a surprisingly high amount of malt. A much milder than I expected. Not a bad flavor, but not as dynamic as Mikkeller's other IPAs.

M: A good amount of carbonation, but a slick, slightly oily finish. Medium-bodied.

O: This beer does have its flaws, but it's still fairly enjoyable.

Haven't loved most beers in this series, with the exception of the Amarillo Single Hop. Mikkel's my favourite brewer ever, so expectations are high. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard silver pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Acquired at K&L Wines in Hollywood. 6.8% ABV confirmed. Bottled and brewed at De Proef. Imported by the Shelton Bastards.

Label is a sort of grey-black mosaic; somewhat uninspired.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 5+ finger beige colour head of decent cream and thickness, and great (8+ minute) retention. Little lacing as the head slowly recedes. Foamy and soft. Body colour is a murky hazy caramel-copper. No yeast particles are visible. Semitranslucent. No bubble show. Standard fare for the style. There's nothing unique or special here, though the head is impressive considering the high ABV.

Sm: Floral hops, biscuity grains, an earthy note, and biscuit malts. Caramel. Grassy character. Some must. Herbal notes. Strange for an IPA; maybe this is old? An average strength aroma. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. Not all that appealing for the style.

T: Hm. Biscuity malts form the unlikely foundation, with subtle floral and herbal hopping riding atop. A bit earthy and musty, in a good way. Caramel malts. Fermented tangerine. Somewhat grassy. More grainy than most IPAs. Clean, pleasant, and balanced. Very timid; this isn't the bold IPA most look for. It's not horribly complex, but that's the nature of this series. It's meant to be simple and educational. And in that it succeeds. Still, it definitely won't blow you away.

Mf: Coarse, scratchy, and wet. I'd stop short of refreshing. It's a bit off; I'd prefer it clean and smooth. Carbonation is almost ideal. Presence on the palate is average. Delightfully soft - a highlight. Chewy.

Dr: It's an educational beer - as all are in this series. But as an import, it's poorly priced. I wouldn't get it again, but I'm glad to have tried it. I guess palisade isn't the hop strain I prefer in IPAs. Good to know. Hides its highish ABV well. Certainly drinkable, but underwhelming.

Body is perhaps a hint redder amber than the others in the series. Poured with a one inch head, not much lacing.

Smell is fruity (tangerine), a bit of green grass, with some sweet caramel notes.

Taste is quite fruity with tangerine, some green tea, and sweet caramel. Quite smooth and accessible, with just a slight bitterness in the finish.

Body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, maybe a bit too much carbonation, sort of soda like.

Overall, one of the better in the series.

Next in line of the single hop series for me is Palisade. This pours out the same deep orange color as the last one with the same solid fluffy head, lacing, etc. As appearance goes, there is nothing left to improve upon.
Smell is once again very subtle, very light. Standard caramel malt smell with a thin layer of perfumey earth toned spice. It sort of smells like a single fragrant flower dipped in honey and rolled in allspice. Its a lovely smell, I was just hoping for an entire bouquet instead of a single flower, you know what I mean?
Taste is gently spicy bitter at first, the bitterness drops out for the mid-sip and reveals the malt, than comes back as floral bitter in the dry finish. Again, this is a very subtle and mild IPA.
Body is smooth and carbonated to just below fizzy.

On-tap at the Brick Store Pub. I've become convinced that the way to drink these single hop beers are not side by side, but one by one and spaced out. I think the more assertive hop varietals just destroy the palate and significantly affect the taste of some of the more subtle hops. A number of bars are putting these on all at once, and that's just silly if you're trying to really distinguish what a hop tastes like rather than what citra does to the taste of Palisade, say. This one pours a nice amber with a grainy head that leaves some excellent lacing. Very floral in the nose, aromatic, and tea-like. Think jasmine tea and you're pretty close. The taste is a bit more subdued. You still get the jasmine tea notes with some fruitier notes in the background, and the usual slightly grainy malts. Smooth and aromatic, a rather delicate hop with some interesting characteristics.

One of the nicer of the single hopped IPAs from Mikkeller so far. I mean, it's still got that clogged character to it, but what is there is a nice brighter experience. By brighter I mean more vibrant than what seems to be the standard for this series. A nice drinker.
