My 1st taste of the Mikkeller single hop series

A - Darkish, brown sugar appearance with a bit of peach hue. Finger and a half of head that sticks with the beer all the way down. Sticky lace everywhere. Lots of floating sediment. As good of an appearance in a beer as I can ever ask for..

S - Nice and hoppy

T - Hoppy, nice malt backbone, and well balanced. Not a very bittering hop. Well balanced citrus and bitter hop. Very good

M - Full bodied and well carbonated. Damn good mouthfeel.

O - It seems to have been aged a bit, I don't know..there is no bottled on date. But has almost turned into an old ale, which I love. A nice door into the Palisade hop, and a damn good beer

Body is perhaps a hint redder amber than the others in the series. Poured with a one inch head, not much lacing.

Smell is fruity (tangerine), a bit of green grass, with some sweet caramel notes.

Taste is quite fruity with tangerine, some green tea, and sweet caramel. Quite smooth and accessible, with just a slight bitterness in the finish.

Body is light and the mouthfeel is crisp and refreshing, maybe a bit too much carbonation, sort of soda like.

Overall, one of the better in the series.

on tap @ the trappist in san francisco.
served in a mikkeller tulip glass.

a - an impeccable pour by the bartender yields a glowing, copper liquid with 2 fingers of dense tan head. after being leveled by said bartender, the head calmed to a fluffy island with sheets of sticky lace in the glass.

s - amazing fruity notes - cherry, orange, grapefruit, and fresh cut grass. maybe a hint of honey.

t - starts out with sweeter toasted bread then fades slowly from citrus to hop bitterness. the palisade hops impart a pleasant mild bitter character that nicely balances the malt and doesn't linger more than necessary.

m - firmly medium bodied, but feels lighter than your average ipa. higher carbonation but very smooth.

o - very unique and enjoyable. would be a near perfect ipa if the flavor had a little more depth. recommended.

Had on-tap at Rattle N Hum in Manhattan, NY
Review taken from notes.

A - This beer pours a a deep orangish copper color. It has a small slightly off-white head on it. The head has good retention and leaves behind some nice lace on the glass.

S - It smells of caramel malt, tropical fruit, and an earthy spicy hop aroma.

T - This has a nice moderately bitter hop flavor and a nice caramel malt background. There are some notes of tropical fruits and some earthy grassiness. The finish leaves behind some lingering hop bitterness.

M - This has a medium body and good carbonation. It goes down easy and has a nice creamy smooth quality to it. There is moderate hop bitterness and some sweetness.

O -There is good drinkability here. I could easily have a few glasses of this. Overall, This is a solid IPA with nice balance to it. This is my first of Mikkeller's single hop series, and I look forward to trying more.

On-tap at the Brick Store Pub. I've become convinced that the way to drink these single hop beers are not side by side, but one by one and spaced out. I think the more assertive hop varietals just destroy the palate and significantly affect the taste of some of the more subtle hops. A number of bars are putting these on all at once, and that's just silly if you're trying to really distinguish what a hop tastes like rather than what citra does to the taste of Palisade, say. This one pours a nice amber with a grainy head that leaves some excellent lacing. Very floral in the nose, aromatic, and tea-like. Think jasmine tea and you're pretty close. The taste is a bit more subdued. You still get the jasmine tea notes with some fruitier notes in the background, and the usual slightly grainy malts. Smooth and aromatic, a rather delicate hop with some interesting characteristics.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle.

The beer pours an orange color with a white head. The aroma is
full of caramel and orange citrus notes, as well as some sweet candy notes. The flavor is similar. The two dominant flavors are orange and biscuit malt, with some light perfume notes. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a slightly hazy copper color with an off-white head leaving decent lacing.

Smells of grainy pale malts with good amounts of soft tropical fruit hops. Also present are hints of floral hops.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Mildly dry pale malts up front are joined quickly by light citrus and slight tropical fruit hops. The tropical fruit flavors fade midway through, allowing the citrus and pale malts to carry through to a moderately bitter ending. Mouthfeel is good, with solid carbonation.

Overall this was one of the better versions in the second batch of the single hop series, an interesting and non-overpowering hop. Worth a shot.

A: Pours a slightly hazy amber with a puffy, creamy white head.

S: Very gentle on the nose, which is not entirely unexpected; Palisade is not all that renowned for its bittering qualities. Aromas of of sweet citrus, cream, and biscuits are noticeable.

T: Notes of cream, biscuits, mandarin orange, lemon zest, pomelo, papaya, and pear skin are easily detected. Subtle earthy notes reminiscent of some of the classic English varieties are also present. The finish is earthy and fruity with a combination of biscuit and citrus flavors.

M: Medium bodied and smooth with a gentle crispness. This ale is very drinkable and much more mellow than some of the other ales in this series.

O: I'm truly impressed with the potential of the Palisade varietal, and Mikkeller demonstrates its strengths skillfully. If this beer were just a little more assertive, I would have no trouble giving it an A.

A-Pours out a dark bronze with a 2 finger crown of slowly dying, light tan foam that left thin, spotty lacing during it's descent.

S-Odd for an IPA but in a good way.Dried cherry, tangerine, almond and grassy hops.

T-Ripe fruit, mostly peach and sour cherry, with some mild grapefruit/citrus and earthy hops.

M-Medium bodied with a clean composition overall, good flavor complexity and a nice hop tingle.

O-One of my favorite in this series.

Thanks to XicanoBeerRun for helping me continue my hop education.

This pours a good auburn/tan color. I pick up a lot of light, earthy aromas. Slightly chewy, with a warm earthy finish. Best description I came up with was like a forest after a rainstorm. Some citrus peel on the palate. Dried fruits: pineapple, mango, tropical fruits, with a very curious finish.

This was an interesting experiment...

Apperance orangish reddish brown.

smell was slight but kind of expect that from this hop.

taste was cirrus sweet and a slight dry biscuit on the back end. Like it leaves your palette dry.

Overall I enjoyed the beer, I would drink it again however I would not stock it.

One of the nicer of the single hopped IPAs from Mikkeller so far. I mean, it's still got that clogged character to it, but what is there is a nice brighter experience. By brighter I mean more vibrant than what seems to be the standard for this series. A nice drinker.

11.2oz bottle alongside the Simcoe version.

Pours a hazy golden amber with a big frothy beige head that recedes to a thick rocky cap and leaves great lacing.

The aroma is tame by IPA standards, toasted malts and faint grassy hops. There are some light herbal notes as well, though the hops are generally subtle.

The taste is mild as well though I think I like it a little more than the nose as the hops are more prevalent. That said, they are not of the big juicy citrus variety, more like light lemongrass and hay. Lightly bitter and toasted malt finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied and well carbonated.

As another reviewer mentioned this type of hop varietal is never going to stand out when tasted next to some of the more assertive hops (like the simcoe). That's all well and good, but I think I actually like my IPAs with more assertive hops.

A nice drinking IPA. The hop exudes a somewhat rich citrus taste, and is pleasant without harshness at all, aided by understated soft carbonation. Pleasant aroma. Hazy orange bodied with some white soapy head. Not big but smooth.IBU 47.Good slightly sweet malting.

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. This beer is definitely not fresh though, and I regret sitting on buying this beer for so long. But alas, here I have it. Another in the Mikkeller Single Hop series. Expectations are decent, since I had good results with many of the others.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours about a finger and a half of frothy khaki foam. Body is a brown hued burnt sienna orange with lots of fine dark sediment twirling around the glass. Looks nice.

S - The smell returns me to what I really like about these beers. Lots of complexity for an IPA, especially at an old age. Earthy grassy hops, sweet malt, champagne like yeast presence, some funkiness, damp wood.

T - Taste follows the nose: sweet creamy caramelized malts, earthy bitter hops, green apples, some coppery mineral taste, & some dry chalky yeast presence. I feel like there is also some herbal spice rack note in there that I can't identify.

M - Feel ends sticky, bitter, and dry. Green apple and caramel malt on the aftertaste. Easy drinking with good carbonation.

Overall, it wasn't quite as amazing as some of the others were, but I guess I can't blame it since it's my fault for not buying it sooner. Definitely a nice showcase for this unique variety of hop. Definitely recommended if this beer is still available to you.

Picked up all 19 of the Mikkeller Single Hop Series beers at my favorite beer store in Belgium, Dranken Geers. Clear copper-amber pour with quickly fading two finger head with minimal lacing. Nose is a bit musty and earthy, but also a bit floral and perfumey. The malt is definitely dominant. With that said, the herbal hops emerge a bit more in the taste. Hints of tea and caramel complement the perfumey, bitter hops with a touch of alcohol emerging as well. The mouthfeel is crisp with solid carbonation and a nice mildly bitter finish. Like the Tettnanger, this is more of a pale ale than an IPA, but solid nonetheless.

On tap at Max's.

The beer pours a copper amber color with fairly good head retention and decent lacing. Do not get much on the nose.... some orange coolaide and a hint of earthiness. The flavor profile is a bit better than that, showing a decent amount of orange citrus, cherry, and some earthiness. In combination, this is pretty nice. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a fairly long, somewhat sweet and fruity finish. Alcohol is pretty well integrated into the flavor, and have to say this is one of the better single hop IPA's I've had from Mikkeller (of course that's not saying much).

Note to self.... stop ordering these generally mediocre beers from Mikkeller. This is one of the better ones, but on average, most are way overpriced for what you get (a middle of the road, nothing special IPA).
