My 1st taste of the Mikkeller single hop series

A - Darkish, brown sugar appearance with a bit of peach hue. Finger and a half of head that sticks with the beer all the way down. Sticky lace everywhere. Lots of floating sediment. As good of an appearance in a beer as I can ever ask for..

S - Nice and hoppy

T - Hoppy, nice malt backbone, and well balanced. Not a very bittering hop. Well balanced citrus and bitter hop. Very good

M - Full bodied and well carbonated. Damn good mouthfeel.

O - It seems to have been aged a bit, I don't know..there is no bottled on date. But has almost turned into an old ale, which I love. A nice door into the Palisade hop, and a damn good beer

11.2 fl oz. bottle, with no apparent bottled on date present. This beer is definitely not fresh though, and I regret sitting on buying this beer for so long. But alas, here I have it. Another in the Mikkeller Single Hop series. Expectations are decent, since I had good results with many of the others.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter glass.

A - Pours about a finger and a half of frothy khaki foam. Body is a brown hued burnt sienna orange with lots of fine dark sediment twirling around the glass. Looks nice.

S - The smell returns me to what I really like about these beers. Lots of complexity for an IPA, especially at an old age. Earthy grassy hops, sweet malt, champagne like yeast presence, some funkiness, damp wood.

T - Taste follows the nose: sweet creamy caramelized malts, earthy bitter hops, green apples, some coppery mineral taste, & some dry chalky yeast presence. I feel like there is also some herbal spice rack note in there that I can't identify.

M - Feel ends sticky, bitter, and dry. Green apple and caramel malt on the aftertaste. Easy drinking with good carbonation.

Overall, it wasn't quite as amazing as some of the others were, but I guess I can't blame it since it's my fault for not buying it sooner. Definitely a nice showcase for this unique variety of hop. Definitely recommended if this beer is still available to you.

Mikkeller Palisade ---4/5.

330ml brown bottle purchased from Leura Cellars as preparation for a Palisade-heavy beer we were planning on home brewing. Poured without the sediment.

Pours a deep red-flecked golden colour, almost amber in hue, with a frothy, off-white head of specks. Lacing is wavy, forming diminutive patterns as it falls. Decent body weight. Looks pretty good.

Nose is pretty muted without much true hop aroma. There's a little earthy greenness to it, mingled with a fairly substantial grainy malt character which works with and accentuates to organic, slightly woody characters of the hops. Slight rounded, sulphury tones come through as well, not unpleasantly, but different enough to the others in the range.

Taste is smooth and pleasant, with a very clean vegetative bite that persists throughout but doesn't become too prominent. Pleasing uptilt of bitterness on the back cleans it up, although it also turns slightly medicinal on the finish. Malt is present throughout but always subdued—while the Palisade doesn't have a truly big character that makes me feel like it has a personality of its own, it does get to show off what it's got here.

Feel is smooth and pleasant as well.

Overall, I think this is a decent beer, but it's probably one of the lesser Mikkeller Single Hop beers. This is probably due partly to Palisade itself, which seems a pretty neutral hop from what I've seen of it. In the end, do I have a sense of the hop though? Maybe. It's actually really hard to see what it has to say for itself, even though you feel like it's trying to say it as loud as it can.

Haven't loved most beers in this series, with the exception of the Amarillo Single Hop. Mikkel's my favourite brewer ever, so expectations are high. 11.2 fl oz brown glass bottle with standard silver pressure cap served into a conical Samuel Smith's pint glass in me gaff in low altitude Los Feliz, Los Angeles, California. Acquired at K&L Wines in Hollywood. 6.8% ABV confirmed. Bottled and brewed at De Proef. Imported by the Shelton Bastards.

Label is a sort of grey-black mosaic; somewhat uninspired.

Served straight from the fridge. Side-poured with standard vigor as no carbonation issues are anticipated.

A: Pours a 5+ finger beige colour head of decent cream and thickness, and great (8+ minute) retention. Little lacing as the head slowly recedes. Foamy and soft. Body colour is a murky hazy caramel-copper. No yeast particles are visible. Semitranslucent. No bubble show. Standard fare for the style. There's nothing unique or special here, though the head is impressive considering the high ABV.

Sm: Floral hops, biscuity grains, an earthy note, and biscuit malts. Caramel. Grassy character. Some must. Herbal notes. Strange for an IPA; maybe this is old? An average strength aroma. No yeast or alcohol is detectable. Not all that appealing for the style.

T: Hm. Biscuity malts form the unlikely foundation, with subtle floral and herbal hopping riding atop. A bit earthy and musty, in a good way. Caramel malts. Fermented tangerine. Somewhat grassy. More grainy than most IPAs. Clean, pleasant, and balanced. Very timid; this isn't the bold IPA most look for. It's not horribly complex, but that's the nature of this series. It's meant to be simple and educational. And in that it succeeds. Still, it definitely won't blow you away.

Mf: Coarse, scratchy, and wet. I'd stop short of refreshing. It's a bit off; I'd prefer it clean and smooth. Carbonation is almost ideal. Presence on the palate is average. Delightfully soft - a highlight. Chewy.

Dr: It's an educational beer - as all are in this series. But as an import, it's poorly priced. I wouldn't get it again, but I'm glad to have tried it. I guess palisade isn't the hop strain I prefer in IPAs. Good to know. Hides its highish ABV well. Certainly drinkable, but underwhelming.
