Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.
Since the cognac version, my hopes have been raised anew for this series. This one pours a bleak, murky black topped by a finger of light tan foam. The nose comprises dry wood (yes, generic wood), lime, agave syrup, ruby red grapefruit, lemon zest, roasted malts, dark molasses, light char, and dark chocolate. There's definitely a stout in there, and it's damn dark, but the tequila barrl really hits ya up front and powerfully. Honestly, not only is it disconcerting, it's not very appealing, either. The taste brings up the same dichotomy between dark, roasty stout and agave-heavy tequila barrel. The finish forces my lips to pucker slightly from the strange flavor combination. The body is a light heavy, with a moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, this beer did not benefit from the tequila barrel at all. Something tells me these are barrels that oughtn't be used for stout-aging very often. Not only that, but things seemed a tad overcarbonated, making things all the worse.

Served in tulip, from bottle, 49°F
Didn't realize this was a discontinued beer when I recently purchased it. Have been loving Bourbon Barrel beers, and thought "Tequila Aged" sounded intriguing…
A: Black, half inch dark brown head. Great sticky lacing though the session.
S: something different, floral, sweet, hint of coffee… but almost an antiseptic finish on the nose as well.
T: upfront with sweet, astringent, and bitter(?). hard to describe, but I keep on sipping….
M: cloying, thick, and asking you to drink more.
O: different, yet still familiar. Very much a nice change from the bourbon barrel aged items. Glad I tried it, and wish I had gotten two when I found these at 5-points in Athens, GA recently.
