Split a bottle with Rickythejeweler.

Poured dark black with a one finger tan head. There was good lacing throughout which surprised me for a 19.3% beer.

Smelled really good, dark chocolate, nuts, oak, bourbon, anise, vanilla, and had some char going on in the nose as well.

The taste was just like the smell but with a surprising bitterness. I thought this was going to be pretty sweet given the abv, but it wasn't at all.

The mouthfeel was heavy but there was no getting around the boozeness on the back end.

Overall I enjoyed this beer it's probably my favorite brew above 18%.

Very very dark and opaque. Suprisingly log lingering head (medium tan) Not sure how you have a19.3 % beer and keep a head like that.

Smells like vanilla, bourbon and alcohol.

Taste is bourbon...with caramel/vanilla then warm alcohol and a lingering bitterness.

Medium mouthfeel...warm

Overall good for what it is....share it with friends. I like this alot better than Mikkeller Black

375 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Vigorous pour yields a small mocha head. Then nothing. Glass-staining and very leggy.

Smell - Raisins and booze. A little bit of chocolate. And then more booze.

Taste - Really alcoholic. Raisins. Bourbon is present, but it's difficult to discern between bourbon liquor flavors and the alcohol from the stout. Intensely roasty malt. Very acrid and burnt finish.

Mouthfeel - Acrid, bitter, rough, and very alcoholic. Well carbonated, though.

Overall - Some interesting flavors, but one of the most unpleasant finishes I've ever experienced in a beer. I kept going back for more, though.

A. Beautiful black with small tan head.

S. Some people wont like it, but I love it. Amazing bourbon alcohol stench up front and in your face.

T. Bourbon then alcohol, its not to much if your a liquor kinda guy, if not your going to hate it. I love it, when you sip it, it bites you back, nothing better then a good liquor, wait is this beer?

M. Perfect balance between thin and thick but the whole time you feel the presence of the ABV it is so great.

O. This is my second time with this one, and I will be posting an ISO as soon as I am done with this post. I love it, great liquor, if you are thinking just another strong stout then ship to me you will hate it, otherwise sip with a buddy because doing this one by myself after a few regular beers is a mean bitch. Try it with friends or as the only one of the night, it is the only from this brewer that deserves an amazing rating!

12.7 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head that stayed around a little while. There's also a lot of lacing left on the glass. Aroma is sweet and malty, the brew smells like chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, roasted and burnt/charred malt, caramel, and a bit of dark fruit. It tastes like bourbon, bittersweet and milk chocolate, vanilla, burnt/charred malt, booze, coffee, molasses and some licorice. The alcohol is noticeable, but it's not as hot as I was expecting it to be considering it's 19.3% ABV. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's slick and coating and has a moderate amount of carbonation. I think it's a good enough brew, and it would be interesting to see how this one ages. $13.99 a bottle.

I first enjoyed this lovely brew at my job in a standard wine stem at cellar temperatures.

A:With an ultra thick completely obscure appearance this beer could blot out the sun, so so very opaque there is no question to where this will lead other than a rich stout.

S: Thick heavy aroma of bourbon immediately emanates out of the glass followed by subtle hints of chocolate and red berries; for many I can see this being off putting but Mikkeller has never been one to appeal to the masses or go for true subtlety. The alcoholic character of this ale to me is something that is not all together a detractor but an indicator of potential. The hints of what is to come being far greater than what is at the moment.

T: Splash of bourbon followed by warm rich dark chocolate overtones and hearty wood beneath the massive layers above it. Definitely needs many years of cellar attention for the those nuances of flavor to fully develop and expose the true nature of what this beast has inside of its dark depths.

M: Thick, heavy, and a brutal alcoholic tang. This beer delivered all I could have ever hoped for and more out of such an exposed mingling of Buffalo Trace and Mikkeller Black. I do expect a mellowing to occur down the line.

O: This was a remarkable brew, but as with many of these extreme beers they do require a bit of cellaring for a true appreciation. I look at this as a piece of art that will slowly reveal itself over the passage of time. I have two and am thinking of maybe even grabbing a third as the years will do this kindly. A reunion with this in about a decade will do the trick as far as I am concerned; it has the balls to dominate that long I am sure.

This is by far the most disappointing beer of my entire life. I have had black hole cognac edition ( 13%) and it was a decent offering. I have heard very mixed reviews about black tokyo and variants of that sort, but I came into this experience with a positive attitude. I opened the bottle and took a whiff and almost gagged. Huge pungent burning alcohol sensation with big big whiskey notes and maybe some heavy chocolate. Its one thing to open a bottle of say 151 and expect a huge boozy smell, its quite another to expect something delicious and be instantly thrown backwards by how horrible it smelled. Well you can imagine the rest. It wasn't so much that is was boozy, it tasted so strong that it burned like I was drinking everclear and had no redeemable quality to it whatsoever. On top of the fact that it was almost 18 dollars for a 15 ounce bottle, and it is aged in top notch whiskey, is a travesty for the beer world. I almost threw up after the first sip and immediately drain poured it. I feel bad saying this because I love beer geek brunch and a few other mikkeller offerings , but this is truly disgusting and I would like to slap mikkeller for putting this on the market. Maybe age it for 25 years and try again. He should be paying me the bottle price to even try something so horrid. It also ruined my taste buds for imperial stouts for 3 days, because everytime i smelled something ( barrel aged old rasputin) i was almost afraid to try it for fear of the abomination that was black buffalo. Stay away !!!!

Black in color with a very small tan head. Strong vanilla and bourbon aromas along with some booze. Quite a bit of roasted malt, maybe a little char. Sweet sugar and caramel with a touch of coffee and dark chocolate. The flavor is sweet with a touch of bitterness from all the roast. Brown sugar, caramel, and a dark chocolate maltiness to go with lots of bourbon and vanilla. A light booziness and still plenty of roast/char flavors.

A - Pitch black, one finger thick and creamy khaki head, light lacing.

S - Chocolate fudge, walnuts, roasted malts, coffee, oak, heavy cream, vanilla.

T - Oak, coffee beans, anise, char, dark chocolate, bitter roasted malts, light smoke, salt peanuts, light bourbon.

M - Full bodied, smooth, low-moderate carbonation.

O - The most intense beer I have ever had! Pretty bitter. No where near as sugary/sweet as I would have expected. As far as I know this beer was aged in the Buffalo Trace barrels for about one full year!

The appearance is brown-black, opaque, with a thin tan cap of foam that sticks to the edges of the glass. It looks inviting. Scents of burned oats, charry grass, burned coffee grounds are detected before being overwhelmed by the smell of grain alcohol. Wow it burns the nasal passages a bit as well. Taste is atrociously grainy, alcohol, burning. Background notes of dirt, burned tobacco, bitterness like spent coffee grounds. Not good. Mouthfeel is burning. It's medium bodied. A friend and I were splitting a 375mL bottle, but just two mouthfuls were more than enough for us and the rest went into the fireplace with a rewarding burst of blue flames! Wow this one wasn't good.

A - Pours thick black, lovely tan one finger head.

S - Straight up the bourbon hits you. Definitely barrel aged! Pretty sure I'm getting some vanilla and semi-sweet chocolate. Faint oak in the background along with roasted malt.

T - The reviewer below me is definitely spot on. Lots of roasted malt, charred oak and bitter finish. You can definitely not dark chocolate coming through. Also, the alcohol is very pronounced. I usually don't mind this if it retains the bourbon characteristics, but this is way off.

T - Full bodied, low-medium carbonation.

O - Everything is great but the taste. Too much charred oak in my beer.

Bottle purchased from West Lakeview and shared on August 2nd, 2012. 4-5 oz. poured into a Jim beam shotglass. Happy IPA Day bitches!

A - Very "Dark Lord-like" in color with a dark khaki head. Decent retention with great lacing. More pronounced than what's typical for a RIS.

S - Lots of cocoa powder. This seems to be chock full of Nesquik. Big oak barrel and a reasonable amount of boozy bourbon. Light butter toffee.

T - Black coffee bean, plentiful buffalo trace oak and whiskey, backend seems tannic with further wood elements and residual alcohol.

M - Can't get much warmer in the throat than this. This feels like straight booze. Medium body, fairly smooth, low to medium carbonation.

D - I expected it to be totally out of control, and it's not. The aroma is average but the taste brings some nicely rounded qualities. Worth a try.

Riding on the heels of the original Black, Mikkeller's Buffalo Trace-infused version pommels the taste buds into submission with an absurdly intense bourbon flavor and feel that's as intimidating as it is curious. Even coming from a staunch bourbon appreciator, I was taken back by the bourbon effect that's on display here.

Black Buffalo decants with an oily consistency that provides a mirror-like gloss of depth and clarity. The head builds like densely on the beer but reduces to a film across the surface before eventually succumbing to the rise of alcohols. As the sandy head colapses into the beer, The lace is replaced by inky legging that stains the glass with dark brandy-like appearances.

Bourbon, cocoa, espresso, toasted walnuts, and scorched molasses all fill the nose with equally high intensity but alternating with each visit of the nose to the glass. Roasted grain, rummy licorice and vinous red grape must gives a nearly sweet and smoky woodiness to accompany the alcoholic notes as the beer warms.

There's no doubt of the prominent flavor of this crazy-stupid stout- It's the undeniable taste of Buffalo Trace bourbon. In contrast, the smoky sweetness of scorched molasses superscedes the roast. Espresso and cocoa follow closely behind but can never command the forefront of flavor beyond the shear taste of bourbon. Oily walnuts, vanilla, caramel, burnt woods, and sherry-like wines give a sweeter and fruitier edge to ride along side of the roast and bourbony sweetness- often in contrast. Delicious but somewhat unsettled as the fusal flavor of alcohol becomes the highlight of the beer while hot and taking away from the subtle interplay of esters, oxides, roast, and caramelized sweetness.

Absolutely brutal to the mouth as an exploratory sip is immediately met with extreme alcohol heat, palate numbing, and sharp stinging of fusal distilled spirits. Undoubtedly full in body, but the beer's thinning alcohol forbids any appreciation of texture or finesse. Past the enormity of bourbon, the roast and barrel astringency continues into a very long and developing aftertaste.

Black Buffalo is an absolute beast that may be appreciated best when taken an ounce at a time from a shot glass. Facetious of course, but the take away from this beer is that it must be appreciated much more as a cordial or replacement for straight spirits as the beer rivals the amount of alcohol that's normally reserved for milder spirits and liquors.

A - Pours an oily, slick, black as I entirely expected it would. Surprisingly, there is a 1 finger thick, foamy head that is a tan, sand-like color. It does eventually recede to a film along the top of the beer.

S - The smell is super powerful and is all bourbon up front. Powerful bourbon, vanilla, chocolate and some bitter coffee come through. Much like Black, there is a very strong roasted malt presence that comes across burnt and ashy. Ever so slightly charred flavor comes from them. There is some dark fruits coming through along with some sweet notes of caramel that I attribute to the barrel.

T - The flavor starts as the nose did - with a strong slew of bourbon. It is closely fllowed by the heavily roasted malts that give an almost burnt, ashy flavor to the profile. Molasses, vanilla, caramel, bitter coffee and dark chocolate also come through along with some brown sugar notes. I think I taste some black licorice coming out as well on the back end.

M - The alcohol heat comes through pretty strong in this one and does tend to detract in the enjoyment. The body is slightly thicker than medium bodied and has a light carbonation to it.

O - Pretty intense beer - even more so than the normal version of Black. The strength of the roasted malts battles the sweetness ofthe bourbon and vanilla, but they go back and forth in the battle with one never really winning. This is a definite sipper and one that would be worth splitting with a few friends.

375ml green bottle shared with friends and poured into a matching Mikkeller Teku. The brew appears black in color with a tan cap. A full wall of tan head leaves faint spotty lacing effect sticking to the glass.

The aroma includes notes of fruity alcohol esters. Some roasty coffee to strong burnt grain. As more sniffs are taken, it becomes dominating with solvent booze that burns the nose.

The taste is straight burning. Just a huge inclusion of solvent alcohol coupled with raw oak and alcohol like vodka. Some earth and tobacco with bitter roasty elements and just a sheer amount of numbing alcohol. The more you hold this beer in your mouth and try to pick out flavors, it honestly burns and dulls your senses.

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest amount of carbonation. That alcohol is atrocious. Just outrageous and too much without seemingly any other character to take in. This could have been aged on dirty toilet seats and firemans boots instead of buffalo trace barrels and none of us would be to the wiser. To this brews credit, I was drunk after drinking my pour.

A: Pitch black pour. Huge effervescent very dark brown head. Excellent legs. Fades slowly, eventually leaving some really nice bubbly lacework behind. Decent retention too.

S: Potent boozy bourbon with HEAVY roasted malt. Loads of chocolate and char primarily. Big, sweet and boozy. Delicious.

T: Wonderful mix of bourbon and roasted malt up front. Lots of caramel, chocolate, toffee and vanilla. Sweet and heavy through to the middle. Sweetness fades into the finish, turning it into a heavy acrid char and baker's chocolate. Super boozy and harsh acrid in the lingering aftertaste.

M: Heavy but not syrupy. Very acrid and drying on the back end.

O: This one is a really tough call. Up front it is sweet and a wonderful bourbon and roasted malt mix. On the back end it is super drying, super harsh alcohol and very acrid. It's like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Very strange. Maybe if you sat on it for a few decades it might smooth out. Right now it's very boozy and sharp for sure. I averaged out the scores to account for a really good beginning but really bad end.

Pours out extremely black with a stable 5mm tan creamy foam lid which leaves intricate patterns with every swirl of the goblet.

Smell.... Holy Booze, Batman! It takes some time to get accustomed to the level of hot bourbon aroma in this one, and to smell the dark baking chocolate and woody char. But once my head gets used to it, the rich and thick BT aroma signature appears and steals the show.

Intense boozey bourbon flavor blows the back of my head off. Sadly, most of the complexity of the nose gets annihilated by the boozey hotness. Instead, I am left with burnt wood charcoal and medium amounts of blackjack licorice...at least it is drier than most of the other high gravity brews that I have had...

Body is on the thicker side of medium, light carbonation.

In summary, a beautiful nose, but the flavor is overly harsh with solvent-y booziness which is an unfortunate flaw on an otherwise great brew.

Poured from 375mL bottle into a Koningshoven chalice. Stamped 4791202. I've been holding on to this one for about six months.

A: Utterly opaque, and just a shade or three short of black. The sparse bubbles that serve as head are brown and cling desperately to the sides of the glass.

S: Huge, raisiny, and estery. Overwhelmingly sweet, with a dead-flat yeast that I associate with old barleywines (think J.W. Lees 1994). Compared to the original, the ginger is still present, but any smoke or meatiness is entirely absent. Perhaps the bourbon sweetness killed faint peat? Definitely a strong beer.

T: Mmm. This is a huge, creamy, smooth, deceptive sort of beer...to start. Then you take a tiny swallow and BAM! it goes down like Alabama moonshine-- Harsh, fiery, and delicious, with a kick that goes immediately to the head and intoxicates after a single half-ounce. The fore/maintaste is full of coconut and chocolate. The aftertaste has all the smoke that was missing from the nose, with a healthy dose of over-ripe, fermenting peach.

M: A touch withdrawn, or flat, but compared to everything else, it pales.

O: An insanely powerful, hugely flavorful, eminently enjoyable beer. Mikkel seems drawn to extremes, and this one is definitely that. Recommended. Will have again, if I can ever find one.

375ml bottle.

The pour isn't pitch black but pretty close, translucent chocolate brown out of the bottle, settling in under a thick mocha head that shows excellent retention and lacing. Really surprised at the head and lacing on a beer this big.

Aroma is bourbon, vanilla and a metric ish-ton of heavily roasted chocolate malts, not quite charred, just heavily roasted with dark chocolate and espresso beans.

The taste just doesn't measure up to the aroma. Alcohol up front, ethyl alcohol in fact. If regular Black tastes like charred earth (which it does in my opinion), then this is kinda like bourbon on the rocks...iis the rocks were pieces of charred earth. Burns like hell going down.

Mouthfeel is well carbonated given the alcohol but is all booze.

This makes Black Tuesday drink like Prima Pils. Doesn't hide the booze at all - the only flavors that do come out are charred malts and licorice. Just not my thing.

Appearance: Mikkeller does it again! How do these guys get all there stouts to look this good? The body is absolutely pitch black and is topped by a large, creamy, cocoa brown head that displays great retention and leaves thick patches of lace as it recedes. A swirl yields thick, yellow tinted alcohol legs on the glass.

Smell: Mmmm, this smells delicious! The initial nose is all bourbon with notes of sweet vanilla, toasted coconut, caramel, chocolate and oak. As the beer starts to warm the base Black notes begin to become apparent with dark chocolate, thick dark fruits, soya sauce, heavily roasted malt and a little char. Alcohol is clearly noted, but not anywhere near what you would expect from a beer that is nearly 20%!

Taste: The flavour displays similar notes to the nose, however the Black notes are more pronounced with a ton of heavily roasted malt, lots of char and a very bitter finish. The sweet bourbon notes (caramel, vanilla and oak) are not as well integrated with the base beer notes as in the nose and seem to clash a little with the charred, bitter finish.
All that said, Black Buffalo is still a pretty tasty beer! The alcohol is well noted in the flavour, but I did not find it bothersome.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and very oily, with a moderate level of smooth carbonation. The second half of the glass has a distinct liqueur feel.

Overall: I really enjoyed this beer and would certainly have it again. I am however, not sure that sweet bourbon is the best barrel treatment for such a roasted, bitter imperial stout. I think peated-whisky would be a much better complement!

A- Pours a black, black, browm topped with a one finger, espresso colored head that disappated quickly.

S- WOW! Bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, leather and dark fruit. Awesome scent!

T- Right out of the park. Exceptional. Very similar to FW Parabola.

M- Slick and oily. Very, very warm. Burns on the way down.

O- I rank this way up there. Very similar to Firestone Walker Parabola...only a tad harsher due to ABV. Frantically searching for another!
( Massachusetts somehow missed out on Parabola this year...supposedly a pretty lame story as to how the stuff did not make it here)!....but this review is about Black Buffalo...GO GET SOME!
(scariest part of this beer is that it was in a friggin' green bottle)

From a 12.7oz green bottle.

Pours a beautiful thick pitch black that is topped by medium dark tan head that is frothy and very slow to recede. Smells of bitter sweet chocolate, booze, chalk, with a ton of heavy bourbon notes present. First sip is creamy, then bitter, with a strong dark chocolate super bitter finish. The creamy mouthfeel really stands out as the complexity of this beer happily greets me. WoW – so many great things happening here. The 19.3% ABV is present but not in your face. As it warms, the bourbon shines to the front of the class and dominates this wonderful beer. The bitter finish lingers long after every amazing sip. Very nice brew!

Well it's review #250, and I thought for this one I would review something rare and unique: Mikkeller Black Buffalo. At 19% ABV it is nearly double the strength of the previous strongest ABV beer I've ever tried (Gulden Draak in case you were wondering). It is also the first Danish beer I have tried, and the first American Double Imperial Stout. That's a whole lot of firsts right there.

Poured from a 375ml bottle into a brandy snifter.

A: Deep black body - can't tell if it is cloudy but I suspect so. The head is a light brown and settles down to a ring of lacing.

S: Big aroma, actually has a pervading vegemite scent all over. There are notes of roasted chicory, fresh dirt, molasses and a hint vanilla thrown in as well. A dark and moody aroma all over.

T: If you like insanely bold flavours then this is the beer for you! Roasted chicory, coffee grinds, molasses and bourbon are the primary characters of this brew. Thankfully the vegemite is just in the aroma because as much as I like vegemite it would not go down well in a beer. There is a smoky note in there as well, and a sugar hit? Of course - in a beer of this intensity it is unavoidable, however it doesn't cloy as much as in a Belgian Tripel, which of itself is quite an achievement. The finish is well-balanced between dry and bitter.

M: Heavy bodied, vinous and with a light dense carbonation. Oily as hell, but again this was expected.

D: This is not your everyday beer; in fact while writing this review and finishing my first glass I am already beginning to feel the alcohol hit the bloodstream - point is if you're going to polish off a bottle of this you are spending the night in. Other than that it is a rare special occasion treat that really shows how well a beer can be crafted outside of the comfort zone (or ABV) of a normal brew. Overall an amazing feat of brewing.

Food match: You might want to forego eating anything with Black Buffalo - the flavours are too powerful, it's more an after dinner drink anyway.

A - Dark brown-black with a finger of frothy chocolate colored head. Fades at a normal pace.

S - Dark chocolate and dark caramel malts, roasted coffee, lots of oak, bourbon and vanilla, molasses, black licorice, some dark fruit, and some booze.

T - Dark chocolate and sweet dark caramel malts, roasted coffee, lots of oak, vanilla, and Bourbon, black licorice, molasses, and dark fruit, some citrus and pine hops and a bit of bitterness, and booze.

M - Full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a warming and sweet finish.

D - Nicely balanced big imperial Stout. Nice body and mouthfeel. The Bourbon is a nice and bold, but well balanced.

A - Dark tan foam lingers as a solid cap, leaving behind specks of lace; pretty impressive carbonation for nearly 20%. Black body, with a vague hint of brown at the edges of the glass.

S - Intense chocolate fudge, vanilla, roasted malts, bourbon, cloying brown sugar and dark fruit sweetness, and some overt alcohol and chemical notes. The latter seemed to bother my friends more than me, but it's still pretty hot.

T - The taste is significantly rougher, with a mix of cloying sweetness and charry ash. Unlike the Cognac edition the barrel-aging doesn't mask the elements I dislike in the base beer, although it doesn't intensify them like the whisky version did either. Jumbled mix of chocolate, licorice, vanilla, tar, ash, oak, and Buffalo Trace.

M - Medium body, grainy and tannic texture, with a lingering sticky finish. Loads of boozy, alcohol heat here, although nothing excessive for the ABV. Carbonation is low, but style-appropriate.

D - Everyone else despised this, but I thought it was merely OK. Manageable in a 2oz serving, but probably needs years to calm down. That being said, the Cognac version went off the rails after about 2 years, so who knows if this will improve over time. Maybe worth trying if you're really desensitized to booze like I am, but not for the faint of heart.
